Re: Cool New Gadget - Google Chromecast

iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -d 8.8.8.8 -j DNAT --to-destination smartdns1
iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -d 8.8.4.4 -j DNAT --to-destination smartdns2

This appears to have some impact. It is working without forced tunnel....

That's on a DD-WRT router.......

Re: Cool New Gadget - Google Chromecast

Now that it supports iplayer, i was thinking of setting it up. my idea was to tunnel all traffic to from the chromecast via a UK server.

has anyone else already tried this?

Re: Cool New Gadget - Google Chromecast

that's one option.

Another option is to use smartdns and snatch the traffic going to Google DNS servers and redirect it as above. Needs linux-based router and maybe 3rd party firmware....

casting via tunneling is possible, provided you set it up on your home wifi router which connects to the WAN on the other side, and not on any individual device... that way your entire home network will appear to be in UK... in this manner not just your Chromecast, all your smart devices will be able to use iPlayer without any additional configuration...

Re: Cool New Gadget - Google Chromecast

ok. i think what i will try to do is setup a rule on my router to divert all traffic destined to the BBC through the UK proxy.

this fixes iplayer without having to route all my traffic or have a 3rd party company MITM my DNS connections.

I guess you would have already read about the Chromecast being hardcoded to use Google DNS 8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4 for resolving all addresses... that is the reason why even with a DNS spoofing service running on your home router, you will still be unable to cast geo-blocked content... for overcoming this limitation, you have to get down to redirecting DNS query packets sent by the Chromecast to 8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4 to the appropriate DNS address by accessing your home router's command line/graphical interface, depending on what is available... from the command line you can use iptables to set these redirection rules and from the graphical interface you could do this by setting forwarding rules in the firewall section... it all depends on what make is your router and what sort of privileges you have to access it... normally you would need administrator privilege to be able to make such configurations...
And I though it was meant to be simple to use.... PAH!!
Anyway, I only use my chromecast for youtube as my 3 year old knows how to cast content onto the TV. For Netflix and movie playing I use the far more flexible WD Live TV.

Thanks a lot for that varun.c.jain, I added into the firewall section the two lines below and everything is working like a charm, even US Netflix which i'd given up on. Someone buy that man a beer.

iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i br0 -p udp --dport 53 -j DNAT --to $(nvram get lan_ipaddr) iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i br0 -p tcp --dport 53 -j DNAT --to $(nvram get lan_ipaddr)

Re: Cool New Gadget - Google Chromecast

Just to add... I've just got one of these thingymachigs.... and I think for 50chfs it's great !

Without any hassle you get the 'google' stuff... i.e.
vids..YouTube
music.. Google Music
photos.. Google Photos etc
any web page.. Chrome

You get 'any' TV station by opening Zattoo and casting that with one click

I'm only struggling.. a bit.. with casting video files I have stored locally... some will open directly in Chrome.. but MKVs wont.. apparently there'll be a version of VLC along soon that will sort that out

It's a great cheap and easy way to get stuff onto an otherwise 'disconnected' TV.

Take a look at www.plex.tv. You have to install it on your computer and it runs on the background, but then you can cast your videos to Chromecast

They also have apps for some mobile phones and tablets so you can stream movies from your computer to your device (thought I think you have to pay to enable that. Casting to Chromecast from your computer is, I think, free but I'm not 100% sure - I use the paid version, so do doublecheck. If you buy the Android or iOS app you can also cast directly from there).

I think it is free to cast from a laptop/desktop, via the Chrome browser... details are at Cast from Browser or Desktop - Plex

I have purchased the Android app for the same and use my phone/tablet to cast content hosted on my Plex server (installed on my laptop) without moving an inch from the sofa... if you want proper 1080p handling, then you might need a good machine with a powerful processor and a decent sized RAM...

I have a chromecast and it works fine but doesn't seem to accept casting netflix from my laptop, even though I am going via a UK proxy and works fine on the laptop itself, I guess netflix is a bit more savvy and knows from the router that I am in CH. I also have a WD TV live but never thought of using that for Netflix, how do you get it to work in CH???

Chromecast has Google's DNS servers HARDWIRED into it. You have to follow the instructions in this thread to intercept and redirect those requests.....

Save the money and buy it here - I'm sure you can use those 45 bucks worth of tax-free allowance for something else that isn't available here.

Maybe get one of these: https://www.roku.com/uk/what-is-roku

Only worth buying in US if you can power it from a USB port on your TV (it needs a power supply, and comes with a US mains plug-in adapter as standard, if no USB port is available).

I bought mine from Digitech for 50 chufs, which includes a Swiss mains power adapter.

Most TV's with HDMI socket will, also, normally have USB socket too.

google sells them directly on the Swiss Play Store for 45 Fr. That includes a Swiss adapter, I'm guessing

yeah, I saw - but there was something that was the deciding factor, that swayed me to spend the extra 5 chufs, but can't remember what, now - maybe it was the adapter (which I don't need, anyway) that was extra.

Now I think about it, I think it was the delivery time - I was going to Bern that day and could visit the Digitech shop. Ironically, they were out of stock, so still had to order online; but it was here the next day.

Re: Cool New Gadget - Google Chromecast

I've just purchased an Amazon Fire Stick off their German site since I already have a Prime account.
No idea if it will even work in Switzerland, but for 19 I thought it was worth a punt

When I clicked the 'buy' button it did remind me of this classic NSFW Onion sketch
