the other thing that might be stopping you is that you need a German billing address, a bank account and a credit history before they'll give you a subscription.
  • German bank account: www.dkb.de (I recommend everyone to have this for all €-related expenses, but that´s another story)
  • German billing address: my sister (OK, that´s not an option for everyone)
  • Credit History: As long as you don´t have a negative history, a mobile phone contract is usually not a problem in Germany (Source: I was working for E-Plus as a student many years ago, might have changed of course...)
Billing address alternatives: www.dropscan.de - maybe www.lieferadresse-konstanz.de (or the like)

If someone would really want this, I´d say there´s probably a way.

...Also, I doubt they'll simply accept that you spend your entire data allowance in Switzerland.
Why shouldn´t they? It´s part of the offer, and the fine print doesn´t exclude it (at least I didn´t see it excluded). A friend of mine from Konstanz happened to be with Base, and at his house the German Network was always weaker than the Swiss network. So he had to "select manual" to be in his German home-network without incurring roaming charged.

Since base offered above, he´s simply on "auto select", and most of the time (when he´s legitimately "home" in Germany) his phone is in the Swiss network now. No problems whatsoever.

According to http://www.teltarif.ch/orange-travel...ews/54754.html Orange is significantly lowering their data roaming tariffs for the EU. 20 Fr. gets you 200mb. Once the 200mb is used up, data roaming is automatically disabled until you book another package (just like Swisscom, but cheaper).

Teltarif is saying that Orange is actually cheaper now than what the EU demands of their providers.

The new package is bookable from March 11

Isn't EU roaming charges ending in July 2014?

So far that´s only a proposal. Whether this will actually come into effect, no-one knows (and, I guess, largely depends on the telecommunication industry´s lobbying in Brussels, which is no doubt happening behind the scenes).

Furthermore the key term in your sentence is "EU" - as such Swiss operators are likely to "politely overlook" what´s happening around them.

Always under the assumtion that we´re talking "data only": Like that you have to pay CHF 20 on top of your overall package, and you get "only" 200mb, while base gives unlimited internet, also in Switzerland.

BTW: The only thing that´s stopping me to get this right now, is that I´d have to find an alternative for domestic Swiss calls.

(I don´t feel like going via a call-through number in Germany all the time.)
you could get a swiss voip # using sipcall and be fully data only.

sure. If you have a sister in Germany, it's definitely doable (why not just take out the contract in her name)? Otherwise, it's probably not worth the effort when you start factoring in the additional costs (like the fact that "Lieferadresse Deutschland" etc. isn't free).

base does exclude using the flatrate for VoiP.

However, can they verify this on a foreign network, and/or when using a VPN?

I´ll ask the guy I know who has base to try it...

I guess you´d only get the initial SIM this way. Everything else would probably be handled online?

The biggest drawback I keep seeing are domestic calls within Switzerland... How should those be handled (if not VoiP).

I´m currently on sunrise24.ch, where the only thing I miss is international data.

I know it's EU. But Dawiz was saying the new Orange tarrif is cheaper than EU rules. Which is a a bit of a misnomer.

Also, I just looked up the 3 Euro / month EU travel flat on base.de:

- only calls to Germany are included, the rest costs 9ct/minute + tax
- SMS also cost 9ct
the "reduced" speed you'll get once you've gone through the 500mb allowance is 56kbit/s - essentially rendering the whole thing moot as that's not enough to send and receive e-mails unless you turn off all other data services.

Unless you spend more time in the EU than in Switzerland, you'll probably be better off with Orange's 20 Fr. / month deal they're currently having (1gb of data in Switzerland, unlimited SMS and 60 minutes per month).

I just quoted what teltarif.ch were saying ("Das entspricht 0,10 Rappen pro Megabyte, womit der Roaming-Preis unter den, von der EU festgelegten maximalen Kosten, liegt." -> that's 0,10 ct per megabyte, which makes the roaming tariff cheaper than max tariffs regulated by the EU).

That's at the moment, of course - if they actually get rid of all roaming charges, it'll be different again.

wouldn't work anyway once you've hit the 500mb threshold. Domestic calls within the EU are fairly cheap though (9 ct / minute, although they're not saying whether this includes Swiss mobile networks. It might, but that would mean that Base would pay on top of every call made within Switzerland as that's below the Swiss interconnection prices .

>>Freevoipdeal<< charges 4c/minute to Switzerland mobile, and they´ve been doing just that for quite a while now.

I don´t know how much interconnect is, but it seems to be less that 4€c?

Thanks for that! I thought it´s reduced to a "slow-but-acceptable" speed. This single piece of information was the catch I was searching for. This really renders the whole thing a bit useless.

Thanks again!

it's around 15ct per minute from Orange to Swisscom and vice versa. Of course it might be less if other providers have better contracts with, say, Swisscom. Which would be another case of Swiss customers getting screwed.

I somehow doubt it?!

I´m on sunrise24.ch at 49 CHF/month for an all-Switzerland flatrate. I call other Swiss networks for ~ 10-15 hours/month. If Sunrise would have to shell out 15c/minute, that´d be between 90 and 135 CHF/month, which would mean I´d cost them more than I´m paying?!

that's subsidized. Most people don't call 10-15 hours a month and pay more than they use.

Yes but it's still 20CHF per month. If I was with vodafone in the UK they have a Euro traveller pack that lets me use all my allowance in Europe for £3 and I'm not limited to 200MB (which let's face it isn't very much)

I use this job-related, that´s why I call out more than I get called (I provide IT support).

If you´re subsidising me - thanks yee all!

However, I still doubt it: This has been my persistent user behaviour since more than a year. I would´ve been kicked out as a customer by now?!

of course we're still getting screwed here - but it's the best price available from any provider in Switzerland :-(

And yeah, 200mb aren't a lot, especially if they don't bill you by 1kb increments

Re: unlimited mobile data for €28/month

The (EU+Switzerland-wide valid) included internet can be extended:

€28 = 500MB
€38 = 2GB
€43 = 5GB

Depending on travel pattern this can still be worthwhile.

However, sunrise24.ch gives me fast 300MB/day (not month) for CHF 49, albeit only in Switzerland. After that it´s capped to a music-streamable speed, and includes all calls to CH.

Decisions, decisions...

Re: unlimited mobile data for €28/month

Update: I applied for a base.de-SIM and got it. I now pay €28/month. Unlimited internet actually works throughout the EU+Switzerland (+Liechtenstein, Iceland and Norway). No more SIM-swapping

They had/have/"seem to always have" a 1GB-offer, so now I have 1GB at full speed, after that it´s reduced but still fast enough for my liking.

I switched to www.aldi-mobile.ch for 1000 minutes inside Switzerland. Unfortunately they only offer this with another 1GB for Switzerland, so I´d love to find an alternative with "1000 minutes only" - but that´s not really a priority.
