Sunrise becomes Switzerland uncarrier

I gotta hand it to them, I didn't see that one coming:

http://www1.sunrise.ch/MOBILABOS-Sun...de_CH-CHF.html

- no more lengthy subscriptions (subscriptions can be switched at any time and cancelled with 30 days notice)
- no more subsidised phones as part of subscriptions (phones can be purchased in instalments and can be changed at any time if you pay for the phone early)

Apart from that:

- you can now get an unlimited everything subscription (within Switzerland) for 50 bucks a month, including 1gb of 4G (didn't find out what speed you get after the 4G allowance has been used up)
- you can now enable roaming selectively (e.g. only if you've booked a data package)
- roaming tariffs have been massively reduced (you get 500mb for 49 Fr. in Europe, for example, and that package is valid for 90 days).
- they've introduced a roaming cockpit just like Swisscom's.

Not bad all in all - let's see what Swisscom has to say now.

Re: Sunrise becomes Switzerland uncarrier

When you are number 3 you do try harder!

Sunrise will now offer two contracts: one for a new phone if you need one, and another one separately for the
voice & data traffic. Swiss consumer associations are very pleased with the new offers.

Very interesting ... T-Mobile is doing the same sort of thing in the USA: T-Mobile Turns an Industry on Its Ear.

Real competition is great (if you are a consumer, not a vendor ).

Re: Sunrise becomes Switzerland uncarrier

Sunrise isn't exactly Switzerland's strongest carrier - and they seem to be dropping the ball on the 4G expansion. Both Swisscom and Orange have made a major push in this respect and Sunrise seems to be doing, well, not much. They also have a very bad reputation when it comes to their customer service - but they're working on that.

Anyway - according to a post on Pocketpc.ch, they reduce the speed to 256kbit/s once you've used up your included data. Not much, but enough to at least enough to e-mail.

Meh, better but still not good enough. Plus with Sunrise, you seem to only get reception if you are on top of one of them antennas

I guess you won't be cheering until you get perfect reception for free :-)

Anyway, for Swiss rip-off standards it's a great deal, but I, too, have reservations when it comes to network and customer service. At least now you can cancel your subscription if it doesn't work out for you.

Re: Sunrise becomes Switzerland uncarrier

I haven't had a subsidised phone for years so this Freedom stuff doesn't do too much for me.

That said, the Classic plan is now a great deal for the average user: unlimited calls and SMS in CH, and 1 GB of high-speed Internet for 50 CHF. For comparison, the cheapest Swisscom plan is 9.- more with an Internet speed of 0.2 Mbit/s.

Re: Sunrise becomes Switzerland uncarrier

ORANGE is pushing a somewhat similar plan at the moment. CHF 40/month on 12 or 24 month contact. No phone tied to the deal. New subscribers only.
  • 3'000 SMS per month to CH and Europe
  • 3'000 minutes per month to all CH networks
  • 1 G of 4G Internet (max 150 mbit/s).

The differences with the orange vs Sunrise offer as I see them are:
- Orange requires 12/24 month contract, No minimum contract period on Sunrise
- I believe there is a limit to the first 3000 subscribers on Orange, No such thing with sunrise
- New subscribers only with Orange, Sunrise on the other hand even recently signed contracts can change to the new tariff.

Re: Sunrise becomes Switzerland uncarrier

Honnestly, do you care about the contract lenght? You always need a plan right? It just mean you can change whenever you like which you will not do every 3 months before it's a little cheaper by the other. And if it happens you must leave CH...you can break the contract anyway for free

Plus, as we are now below the 60 or 80f per month for almost really "unlimited" plan...I start caring more about the service and coverage than the price and on this criteria the ranking is clear: Swisscom, Orange, Sunrise...

With Swisscom having a decent network and customer service and the other two basically sharing second place, far, far behind.

I'm ok with orange in general, and they offer me a free ipad mini which helped convincing me but I agree Swisscom's ahead.

The contract length is a big factor. Mere months ago Sunrise renewed contracts yearly. IOW you only had a very small window to cancel your subscription (two months before expiration); otherwise it got renewed a further year and you were stuck with them a full twelve months. Getting rid of that is a big improvement.

Except that Swisscom charges more than 80 CHF. That is, unless you're okay with 1 Mbit/s Internet.

Swisscom's way too expensive :-/ I'm somewhat glad I haven't renewed my contract (129 Fr. per month :-/ yet this year as I'll now switch to Sunrise, even though their network is probably worse.

Re: Sunrise becomes Switzerland uncarrier

I might be wrong, but.... Orange 3GB of internet 4G 24 month sim only is only CHF25 per month. Ok so there's 0 minutes but I'm antisocial.

Seems like a wicked deal.. 3GB is plenty if you don't stream video.

you get 5gb from Sunrise for 35 Fr., including 50mb of roaming in Europe. Or 1gb for 15 Fr., including 25mb of roaming. Both without a minimum contract term
