Swiss Post - Das ABO

Hi All,

Just noticed a new mobile phone offering from Swiss post, they call it "Das ABO"

The service runs on orange with 4G, They are offering:
- Unlimited calls to all Swiss numbers (mobile & Landline)
- Unlimited calls to EU (Zone1+2) & US
- Unlimited SMS (not sure if it to Switzerland only or EU also but Assume only Switzerland)
- 500MB 4G Internet (again I would assume only thought Switzerland)

All the above for CHF39/month (one month contract) or for an extra CHF10 ie CHF49/month (24 month contract) you can get either an iPhone 5c or a Samsung Galaxy s4 for CHF1.

Has anyone looked into this offer? what are your thoughts? To me the CHF39/month looks like a very good deal, better then anything else I have seen with the same attributes

p.s.1: an interesting note is that you can add more internet if you want for the month at a cost
p.s.2: Also noticed that Orange have changed their monthly offering and added new things plus taken out others, have a look here at their Orange Me Subscription.

Not so interesting if you look at cablecom plans:

Interesting...what network do they use (dumb question if it is their own, I just hadn't realized there were others outside of Swisscom/Orange/Sunrise)?

BTW - I think your link is for the 5c and not the 6, but easy enough to find either way (I guess you want to compare apples to apples and as the 5c is what is mentioned above, I guess the link makes sense. I am a little slow this Monday...)

Not really comparable for a few reasons:
1) This offer is valid for current cablecom subscribers only!
2) The offer does not include calls to Europe\US
2) At CHF44/month, you still have to put an upfront payment of CHF 249

The only other comparable offer is from Yallo Flat at CHF39/30days, this includes:
- Flat calls within Switzerland
- Flat Calls to Europe
- 1GB of data in Switzerland.

So to compare, you with yello you get an extra 500MB of internet but you lose the unlimited calls to the US and you also lose the unlimited SMS!

Cablecom also uses Orange, but you are right its the 5c in the post offer and 6 in the cablecom.

Another important difference is the internet on cablecom is at the moment 2 and 3G only while the post is actually offering 4G

I do not think there is any trick! I think the post was able to get a good deal out of Orange for the simple reason that they have are able to penetrate the different market demographics in a huge way and increase the customer base of Orange by simply having more stores (post offices) then any other company in Switzerland!

Having said that, I could not find any "post die abo" specific T&C's so the devil could be in the details.

Re: Swiss Post - Das ABO

Bit confused by the following from the FAQ. Can you retain your orange number if you switch to this or not.

Quote:
Can I take my phone number from another operator to The ABO?

Yes, you can.

I already have an Orange subscription/Orange PrePay. Can I switch to The ABO?

Yes. Once you have reached the minimum term of your current subscription, you can terminate it and enter a new contract with a new number for The ABO in any Post Office.
It suggests you could take your Orange number to this abo but then suggests you need a new number. I was looking at changing my Orange abo a few months back but for new subcribers (or where you take a new number) it was 20 CHF cheaper per month.

At the end I was considering switching to sunrise for a few months and then back as then I'd be a new subscriber again but this abo also looks ok but I'd want to keep my number.

I also read that. I think the best option is to contact orange CS and ask them.

Alternatively and as you mentioned change to a pay a as you go for a month on any other provider (or sub provider) and change again to Das Abo.

Das Abo has increased the Internet allowance to 1GB.

Calls are unlimited for 13 more countries.

Thanks, I just switched from Orange PrePay today at the post office. From what I understood you pay the 40CHF for the new SIM, but then it gets credited to your account for the first month's pay (since you're actually porting from Orange). It took some doing as they had to call Orange to take care of it, but by the time I walked out I got an SMS on my old SIM saying "Your number has been ported to the new SIM" and the new SIM is up.

BTW the free calling includes landlines and mobiles in all the countries, and Canada as well (not just USA). It makes it better than my cablecom plan, and I think I can cancel my Skype World subscription now too...

Re: Swiss Post - Das ABO

I've also signed up today. I walked into the post office to purchase the M-Budget sim at 29 CHF per month, but the lovely lady behind the counter talked me into L'Abo instead. I was particularly swayed by the unlimited calls to Australia (landlines and mobile). I am concerned about using Orange, but the lovely lady told me she uses Orange and it is fine. I hope she's right

Orange is fine, their only weakness (along with sunrise) is signal strength and internet speed up in maintains or very remote areas!

Having said that, they are getting better and better everyday!

After 6 years with Orange, I would not agree. They change their contract without even informing you. I started with a 3 month rolling contract with unlimited texts for a low price (which I forget now). Wind forward several years and the price increased, I assume because my contract was no longer offered and I had been changed to a rolling 1 year contract. The only reason for rolling contracts is to make it harder to change if you find a better deal.

Several times I've had errors on my bills and had to spend a LONG time on the phone trying to resolve it, only to have the error repeated the following month and go through the procedure again.

I'll be switching to the Mobile One offer when my present 1 year contract ends. No more rolling contracts for me thanks, although it looks like that ABO contract is easy to end. Let's hope they don't change the terms a few years after you sign up.

It's reasonable as long as you don't use data roaming - that could be where they will make their money back...

Beware that you cannot buy any roaming packages from Orange and Das ABO does't offer any either. All data roaming is charged at the 'standard orange roaming rate' of 4 CHF / 2MB.

A friend has Das ABO and enabled an Orange roaming package using SMS - just as it explains on the Orange account portal you get with Das ABO, but got stung with a huge bill.

She bought the 'Go Europe Data' - 200MB for 20CHF but ended up being billed for 200CHF based on standard roaming.

Spent hours on the phone to Orange who vehemently denied that you could activate the option with Das ABO until they received a picture of the SMS confirmation. And then the lousy bar stewards only refunded half the money...shoddy IT, but even worse customer care.

Re: Swiss Post - Das ABO

I´d be grateful if any "das Abo" user could answer the following:
  • Does "das Abo" allow call diverts?
  • If so, only to Swiss numbers, or also to countries which are covered by their flat rate?
  • Last-but-not-least: Are these diverts also included in the flat rate, i.e. not seperately charged?

Thanks for the warning - I'll keep an eye on it. Yes, L'Abo is not a rolling contract - just month to month, but they require 60 days notice if I want to end it. Let us know how you go with the M-Budget One.

Re: Swiss Post - Das ABO

For those who don't speak a lot using mobile (like me), but still interested in 4G + SMS there is an offer to look at: Orange by digitec

You get 1GB + unlimited calls inside orange + unlimited SMS + s5 or s5 mini for free which is not locked and you can sell it immediately if you don't need one + 60 mins in all other networks if you pick s5. Price 35/20 CHF/month depending which phone you have chosen + 40 CHF for the sim-card.

Basically, after selling the phone I pay around 10 CHF/month for 1GB + unlim SMS + 60mins swiss + unlim to orange.
