Me too. I'll start by asking why anyone would even think about "upgrading" if their current phone is still working fine.

Bigger screen I could see for some, but then there've been big screen models around for a while. More memory perhaps? I didn't think there were any significant changes in this area.

So, what possible reason would you have to change to a new one?
An overriding need to buy useless crap.

Bragging rights at the cafe with mates.

Not patient enough to wait 0.00001ms for the phone to react.

Taking onboard opinions read in the lastest mainstream fashion magazine made by mobile phone gurus about how the new iphone can track the location of your dog.

Not being happy with who you are?

People upgrade phones for the same reason they upgrade any other luxury electronic gadget... perceived value, and finding things (hardware or software features) they like better than the old phone they had.

Seriously, posts like this where you even the continue to harp on like a complete moaning minnie for several more posts trying to find more reasons to berate people for doing what is a very common thing, and which they shouldn't ever have to justify, are the reasons why EF is such a crap place to post about technology sometimes. It just infects what should be a cool and interesting thread with pointless negativity. If you have zero interest in a thread then, seriously, just do us all a favour choose not to moan.

Ironic that it is two mods who are the only two people to spoil the thread.

Re: The Android beasts thread, 2014 edition

The only reason I upgrade regularly is a combination of novelty value followed by general boredom. For me a part of the enjoyment of tech is the research, reading reviews, forums etc.. and not so much the ownership (because it usually ends up disappointing or not living up to the hype)

As a result I've currently got the three major phone OS on the go (Android, iOS and WP 8) and that keeps me happy

I just got an S4 at Interdiscount. Great deal!

They tried to sell me all kinds of things on top of the phone... "Do you want insurance? Do you want a memory card? Do you want a case? Do you want a screen protector? Do you want Office 365? Do you want us to set up your phone and apps?" Just be prepared to say "No, thanks" a lot.

The offer is featured on the front page of their leaflet so I don't think they'll last long.

Thanks to RTN an we_da_man.
Just install Cyanogenmod in it and don'twaste your time with Samsung's Touchwiz.
It's one of the lucky devices that the automated cm-installer supports so it's a piece of cake.

It's called 'balance', and I only asked some very genuine questions, in an effort to better understand what makes some people tick. Real questions, not berating at all. You may perceive it as an attack, but if so it seems to suggest that you're perhaps a little over-sensitive about such things. Is that because even uber-gadget-geeks find it hard to justify their purchasing decisions sometimes?

But seriously, I never suggested anywhere that spending vast amounts of money on technology just for the sake of it was a bad thing, did I?

Re: The Android beasts thread, 2014 edition

I upgrade because it's a fashion statement (like those jackets we have to wear now which are two sizes too small...). There are certain situations where the phone you lay on the table has a similar ambiance to the watch you're wearing (can't be cheap and nasty).

I prefer the HTC One currently; but being in the middle of the upgrade cycle, I'm a bit yawny-yawny about the next phone.

Since this thread is called 'Android Beasts', what's exciting me is the Nexus 9: Android tablet goes 4:3 screen with a new fast runtime and that sublime HTC build quality. Can't wait until it arrives.

OnePlus One 64 GB here too. The only thing missing from some more expensive phones is waterproofness (it ain't a gimmick, my S2 died in Australia last year overnight with water condensation inside shortcircuiting electronics).

If you have one of the ancients (like my S2), the overall huge jump in everything possible is eye-opening (and I am not overly geeky person). Speed, capacity, camera, big screen that actually shows more and is way easier to type texts for big guys like me. And since I use it as car navigation too, bigger screen & faster (CPU & GPS) is really better.

Got a stock Cyanogen too, which is probably the best thing on it, without losing warranty (i know it can be removed, but not many people want to bother with this).

Once lost/destroyed/battery gets screwed, next one will come. Thinner, lighter, faster (although probably not much compared to current one), with better battery life. I don't see why ever pay more for new one. And till it fails, I will be extremely happy user.

China's Xiaomi becomes world's third biggest smartphone maker without leaving Asia

To be honest, I really like my Sony. And I wish to buy more in the future. Dedicated camera button, minimal overlay, yada, yada, yada. With the latest numbers reported by Sony Mobile and their suicidal 6 month renewal cycle, I am not sure if Xperia Z4 will see the light of day... Which leaves Lumia as one of few options (good camera + hardware cam button + quality build).

To date I have *always* upgraded out of boredom. My "used" phones have always been in near-new condition with no scratches or damage whatsoever, serving their new owners (and some relatives) long years...

The main problem today is - other than project ARA which is still in diapers and nowhere near usable - smartphones have seriously hit a plateau and offer no excitement.

I would totally agree with you, just make everything bigger. Bigger screen, bigger processor, but need bigger battery to power them. Its a vicious cycle

It is vicious only for those that follow it. The smart ones that break out of the pack and think:
longer autonomy (on the same battery),
lower consumption screens (with same ppi and nits),
better radios (signal quality + power profile),
better lens and optics for the camera,
better sensors for better experience (until this day my xperia compass is off by A LOT)
better materials (tough, robust, waterproof, etc).

These few will win new hearts. As excited as I am about ARA, before it is a true competitor to current format phones, it will be a while...

The camera sensor of the Oneplus One is a Sony. And you can get the shutter on the power button and the zoom on the volume. FWIW...

At launch I was impressed - not so much after initial reviews quoted sub-par software and hit-and-miss camera performance.

Re: The Android beasts thread, 2014 edition

I'm on an iPhone 5S that works fine, but I'm REALLY, REALLY leaning towards the Note 4 for a variety of reasons:

(Note, this is not a "which phone is better", it's more of a "this is why I'm leaning towards one than the other". I really do like both the 6Plus and the Note 4)

Pros:
  1. I like to sketch, so the stylus is nice (There are styluses (stylii?) for iPhones, but the pressure sensitivity is in the pen, not in the pad (insert phallic joke here, har har), so it's a bit of a faff.
  2. 2500x1600 at over 500ppi (Yeah, overkill, so sue me. But the colours DO pop like candy!)
  3. SD card expansions for virtually limitless upgrades
  4. Drag and drop music. Oh iTunes, how I hate thee!

Cons:
  1. I REALLY REALLY like the Apple ecosystem; it's just frigging slick. Getting a new device I can transfer my old stuff and be up and running in under an hour. Plus, I'm gonna hate rebuying my apps.
  2. Lackluster fingerprint sensor (I really didn't think I would use it on my iPhone, but it's really nice)

The only person I know who has one is suffering from regular reboots.
QC and questionable or outsourced customer service is exactly the kind of thing that worries me about these Chinese companies.

Re: The Android beasts thread, 2014 edition

In terms of look and feel the Galaxy Alpha is about as good as it gets in terms of Android phones. Its very iPhone 5 in terms of ergonomics and build quality, but its just a shame that its inferior to the less worthy flagship Galaxy S5.

As for the Note 4, the stylus is a genuinely nice innovation that doesn't feel like you're sacrificing thickness, weight etc.. However as with the above two phones, the Touchwizz overlay kills it for me. And there is no point going for custom roms because the stylus relies on Samsung's customisation to work.
