And there is no point going for custom roms because the stylus relies on Samsung's customisation to work.
Really? If I go custom, I can't use the stylus to draw on the Note 4? That may be a dealbreaker for me...

Re: The Android beasts thread, 2014 edition

i just got a Galaxy S4 i9505 taking advantage of Interdiscount's offer and I am trying to decide if I'll install Cyanongenmod or if I'll keep Touchwiz.
Even if I keep Touchwiz it will be with the Google Now Launcher which is just so beautiful. But I can't create folders in the apps drawer to hide Samsung's cr*p.
The only thing I like is the multi-window mode.

I had several company and personal S2 and TouchJizz was disgusting. To a point where even nice looking hardware (S5, Note4) is no longer appealing. Thing is, I have not been with Cyanogen since the S2, so really cannot say if it has remained vanilla-true or evolved to host bloatware like on the OnePlus One (check some reviews to see the "candy" excess). In my books it is hard to imagine anything worse than TouchJizz, so... root and Cyanogen if I were you.

It's done, I am running Cyanogenmod 11 (Android 4.4.4) on my S4 and it is so cool!
I have no idea what they did with Oneplus One, but the standard CM11 is extremely clean. I only disabled a couple of apps, and this only because I am obsessed with order.
It looks almost identical to a Nexus' official ROM, except for some extra settings on the notification bar, lock screen etc that I actually like to have.

Guys there's a new update for Google Keyboard and once again I had to download it manually...
Drives me crazy.
If you have activated Google+ I'd really appreciate it if you could click on the link below and +1 my post. I'm trying to make Google see the problem.

Rocking Android 5 on my Nexus 5 since yesterday and it's very very nice. All the best of iOS and Android in one.

Battery life is much improved but not nearly as good as my oneplus one. I'd never have dreamed of 3.5 hours of screentime on kitkat!

Re: The Android beasts thread, 2014 edition

I am itchy for a new device. My beloved Xperia Z1 has been nothing but great to me but Lollypop is nowhere near and I just cannot hold it.

In the past days, I have been on the fence between pulling the trigger on a Z3 or exploring other options... The rumours on the Z4 are not exactly drooling material apart from the new sensor that *MIGHT* make it or might be postponed for Z5 or god knows when.

I love the physical camera button, I like the OIS and minimal overlay, the Walkman + battery saving features. But it is an old device and my geek eyes lust something newer. Shame on Google for pulling out a 6-inch monster Nexus, that is so huge. Moto X2014 is nice but still lacks in the camera department...

So, my dear fellow geeks, do share your view on the best Android camera phones out there? If you were compelled to buy one in the coming weeks - which one would you buy?

Re: The Android beasts thread, 2014 edition

I don't think there is anything amazing in the current crop of Flagship Android handsets, most of the innovation has been at the lower price points e.g. Oneplus which is a stonking phone for the money (although customer service is patchy). Probably the best bang for buck in the heavyweights is the LG G3, prices have plummeted, I've seen them go for less than CHF 300 on Ricardo (as new with box, receipts etc..). Its a great in-between phone (with Lollipop) to tide you over until the situation improves

You should be glad you haven't got a buggy Lollipop update as the Nexus 4 and 5 did.
IMHO hold on to your Z1, at least until there's a nice and stable Lollipop 5.0.1 (or higher than .0.1 depending on how long it takes Google to fix it).
This way you have something that works all right and when Lollipop is 100% stable you may find better phones (or the same phones for less money) than right now.

I forgive the shortcomings of OnePlus due to the epic battery life.

Love 5.5+ hours of on screen time

Re: The Android beasts thread, 2014 edition

My LG G2 took a life-ending spill at the hands of the wife, but thankfully it's almost my birthday so I got to hunt for a replacement Android phone. A reasonably priced one (no need to profit from her guilt that much ), so that priced out the Nexus 6 and a few others. My four finalists were the Huawei Mate 7, the Xperia Z3, the OnePlus One and the LG G3. Was able to try all these phones out at the store and ended up deciding on the LG G3, which is going for only 443 CHF at microspot.ch now, and that's for the 32GB version, which has 3GB of RAM instead of 2GB of the 16GB on top of the extra memory. Too good of a deal to pass up, about what you'll pay for the OnePlus One in Switzerland (and that's for the 16GB, not 64 GB version).

I was really impressed with the Huawei Mate 7. and it had many things going for it that I liked. It has the first functional fingerprint scanner on an Android phone, a thinner bezel even than the LG G3 and perfect specs. On paper, it was the phone I was going to get. But after trying it out, like the Nexus 6, at the 6" screen just makes it too big to be usable, even with the crazy thin bezel. I have little girly hands and my thumb could barely reach to the other side of the screen. Comparably, the OnePlus One and LG G3 with their 5.5" screens are barely on the right side of too big. I found my old G2's 5.2" screen size to be perfect, and it's the same size the Xperia 3 has. I'm really impressed with the Xperia 3, the size is right, it's waterproof, but in the end the G3 had a few things going for it that I liked more. Specs that match, 1440p screen, wireless charging, and also the fact that I'm used to the back buttons on my old G2. The familiarity on top of everything was too good to pass up. A friend of mine has the OnePlus One and I got to use it a bit, and it's a good phone, but feels compromised in a few ways that don't make sense to ignore when the LG G3 is at the price it's at.

So looking forward to receiving my LG G3 in the middle of the week, a 5.0 Lollipop has already rolled out so I'll be able to start using it directly. I didn't want to get a new phone until at least the next generation of flagships, but maybe it's a blessing in disguise (price-wise especially) to not be an early adopter and make this choice when they're already mature products.

Workman, bad, tools, comes to mind.
A bad workman blames his tools?

Maybe because part of being a good workman is curating a good set of tools. Or even manufacturing or modifying those tools.

So for a workman, to blame one's tools is to criticise one's own ability to maintain an effective toolset, thus casting oneself as a bad workman.

Perhaps it is time we kickoff a fresh 2015 thread? S6, Z4, M9, One+ Two et al rumors abound...

Personally I am itching for a new device but all the good Snapdragon 810-based ones are scheduled for MWC in early March. Count another month or so for in-store availability and here comes Easter. ugh.

One possible pill to feed the Lollipop-hungry nerd may be a pre-owned HTC M8. These have a GPE edition, so basically a breeze to make it a Nexus-device. And yes, Android 5.0.1 is already available for the HTC One M8 GPe Flashing a regular M8 into a GPe is well documented on XDA

Re: The Android beasts thread, 2014 edition

Very happy with the G3, having snagged the 32GB version for under 450 CHF I feel like I got away with something. A hell of a smartphone a huge improvement on the G2 in every way. Lollipop works great and I was able to remove enough of the bloatware, so I'm not even gonna root it and stick with stock. Loving filming stuff at 120fps and 4k and the laser focus is a huge improvement on the G2 camera. Will try out wireless charging this weekend once I receive the chargers.

Or the forever young Galaxy S2 ;-).
CM12 (Lollipop 5.0.2) is already available for it with most functions working.

It would be a different kind of a thread.
I started the two existing "beasts" threads after all major players had released their new flagships. I also think that most people get their new toy between October and January, and this explains my timing.
That said, if you want to open a thread to discuss rumored upcoming devices please feel free to do so.
But let's not start a new poll based on rumors.

LOL... right now all we have is rumors but I let you kick off the new thread when you think we have enough substance to chew on. Being ahead of the news somehow reminded me of this little spark of genius:
