Re: The Android beasts thread, 2014 edition

I am not much of a tech gadget person, but I have a free upgrade every 2 years, so why not?

I just got today my HTC One M8, it's a bit bigger than my old Incredible - which might be a problem with some of the smaller purses I have, and might be a bit more uncomfortable when I take it running with me so I can listen to my Pandora stations on the go.

But it's thinner and in general it looks cooler than the old phone.

I guess I'll turn it on tonight and see if I can figure out the basics, before our IT folks take it away from me tomorrow to install all my work applications and other needed apps.

So far, I've loved all my "Android beasts", and this one says "Snapdragon" on the box so it ought to be good!

P.S. I will be recycling my old phone like I always do.

Snapdragon is the processor they use and, in layman's terms, the Snapdragon 800 in late 2013 is when phones finally became fast and intuitive. Going back to older phones is just a slow and painful experience. The HTC One M8 and my new phone LG G3 both use the updated 801 version of the chipset, so expect silky smooth.

Re: The Android beasts thread, 2014 edition

First phone with the next generation processor Snapdragon 810 is announced in LG G flex 2. So HTC, samsung will follow. I would wait couple of months before buying a new phone.

Sony might be cutting it's mobile division. Big shame. They've been making some cracking devices.

Silver lining: with phones and computers gone, less awkward product placement in every movie produced by Sony. The least realistic thing in a James Bond movie is seeing him use a Vaio.

Interesting stuff. Shame Lenovo are the only things on the market with 3 pointer buttons, a requirement for an X11 / Unix workstation of a laptop.

Presumably the other major brands are backdoored too - by different governments.

given the remote admin features within intel chips, a particular brand is probably the least of your concerns...

Re: The Android beasts thread, 2014 edition

Well it's time: I need to jump onto the Android (or iPhone) bandwagon. Since I'm fairly new in the game, I've realized there's a lot out there. As it stands, I've spent a few hours doing google review comparisons.

My present winner to go for is the Samsung Galaxy Alpha.

Any input/advice/recommendations/reviews?

Thanks a bunch!

Samsung Galaxy A5, cheaper and provides much of the same performance barring a few minor areas.

The only issue with the Samsung phones in my opinion is the bloated, childish Touchwiz overlay. Many of the features e.g. fingerprint, heart rate, IR blasting etc.. rely on it so you cannot simply flash the phone with a cleaner, less obtrusive ROM.

Thanks for the input. I'm looking into

Now the price cost isn't an issue--that being said would you go for the Alpha? or does the A5 have some benefits beyond value-for-money?

Good to know---which direction/brand would you suggest is more practical. I'm coming from a Bberry (which I love :P ) but is not supported by our IT team.

Well if its your first Android then the handholding approach from Samsung might be OK for you e.g. my dad has a Galaxy S4 and he has it set to Simple interface which suits him well. However if I were getting one for myself and money was no object then it would probably be a Sony Xperia Z3.

I've also recommended an LG G3 but that didn't go down too well , its more of a love it or hate it phone, not helped by the unorthodox button placement.

Can you explain this in a bit more detail for us poor punters? How much does this affect performance like battery life and download speeds ect or is just annoying for you tech guys? Can't you just disable or delete some of these applications and get similar performance as flashing?

I'd give the Xperia Z3 a vote as well.

I'd recommend the Nexus 5 but the battery life is really piss poor

I'm just personally not a fan of spending more than I need to unless there is a clear reason or noticeable benefit. There is no real tangible benefit of an Alpha over an A5.

Sony Z3 Compact would probably be my main choice if I was buying now due tot he size and performance, though the camera isn't so great..
