I'm seeing a lot of support for the xperia Z3. Any comments on the normal vs the compact?
Sony have understood better than any other manufacturer that a compact version of their flagship phone should have similar performance which is why there are so many accolades for the Z3 Compact. So its really a choice about screen size, and for me a standard Z3 hits the sweet spot without being too big.

The battery in the compact is smaller so shorter battery life. I believe the chip/ram is the same though.

Fantastic phones, but don't drop them - that waterproof seal is done with some very expensive lasers that the small repair shops just can't match.

Re: The Android beasts thread, 2014 edition

Three contenders to consider, imho: (echoing what others have already stated) the Xperia Z3, plus Moto X 2014 edition and the HTC One M8.

Choice of phone is highly subjective, so my suggestion would be - go to any carrier store and handle a few of them in person. You'll get a lot out of it: target screen size, what you like and dislike on first go, all valid points in your decision process.

Whatever you end up with, let it serve you well

You don't consider Samsung phones a considerable contender? Any specific reasons to why?

I personally find the bloatware called TouchWizz to be too much, to a point of being ridiculous; equally so, I would discourage you from going down the path of rooting and flashing custom ROMs from day one.

Today Android has evolved enough to offer huge variety and choice of flavor to suit (almost) any taste. I suggested the Sony, as it is thoughtfully minimalistic on overlay, still offering good features like Walkman, camera and Stamina. HTC for their hardware design and modest overlay "beautification". Motorola for their modest overlay and superb hardware and radios.

I gather this is your first smartphone, so it will be hard to ask for preference of features rated by importance. In my case, I need good camera (two kids, never know when you need a good and quick shot), good music (in car and headphones) and durability (with a rugged case on top of course). Considering my innate hate for bloatware, seeing me with an Xperia is kinda obvious... Hope this is helpful...

And I always find claims that Touchwiz is "too bloated" equally amusing. You can always use a different launcher, and most annoying sections of it are replaceable without rooting.

Samsung make amazing high-end Android phones with the arguably best screens (AMOLED is like a balm on the eyes) in the business, of that there is little doubt.

Touch wizz isn't a launcher. Changing the launcher is papering over the cracks...the underlying touchwizz horror is still underneath slowing down and bloating the phone

It's not a launcher, but one component that causes a lot of the lag IS the launcher component. Changing the launcher dramatically improves the smoothness of Samsung phones.

The rest, while not exactly minimalistic, is hardly "horror".

Re: The Android beasts thread, 2014 edition

Personally, I'd go for the Nexus 5. Although on specs it has worse battery than LG G3, I don't see that at the moment.

An alternative if you don't mind something without top of the line specs is the Moto G (2nd Gen). Or Nexus 6 if you don't mind a phablet sized phone.

As a Z3 owner I can attest to the fact that it can take a fall or two (or more). My previous Nexus 4 was ridiculously fragile. The Z3 is a trooper. Front is impeccable, the rear is scratch-prone but both very durable.

Samsung make decent phones, but I do not buy them any more due to way they are increasingly locking them down. I don't particularly like TW either.

I avoided the Z3 because the glass back: pointless, fragile, heavy and reduces radio transmission.

TouchWizz is so deeply embedded into the ROM and has so many offspring (just check the list of running apps/services in comparison to another android) that it is horrible. And impossible to remove. And impossible to overlook by plastering a launcher on top. Case in point: average stock S5 ROM size - 1,45 GB. Average Cyanogen ROM for said S5 - 254MB.

I think Android has so many flavors exactly to fit the multitude of user tastes. The best part is - if you do not like something, you are free to change it If you like the hardware of Samsung but dislike the bloatware, root, flash, voila...

Re: The Android beasts thread, 2014 edition

Also, given that that the N5 and N6 are good phones, run stock and are updated in a timely fashion. I consider these the default starting choices and would then simply ask why wouldn't I want either of these and which trade-offs would I take to get the other features.

Who cares how much space it takes up on a high-end 16GB ROM device? 1.45GB is hardly earth-shattering, and Cyanogenmod is so slimline as to make comparisons pretty unreasonable.

I have had many Samsung devices since Android came into existence, and with some tweaks you can get them running fast and smooth without the need for rooting.

Unfortunately, my provider doesn't MOTO, Nexus, or LGs.

Thanks to this good discussion on bloatware and TouchWizz, I feel like the Z3 or Z3 compact.

I'll have to swing by a store and manhandle them for person feels.

Digitec offers subscription renewals - and the hardware discounts that come along with it - for Swisscom and Sunrise. And those discounts apply to their entire product line.

...the same company which has deemed that Blackberry's are a security risk and I can't use it for company uses. (Hence the need to get an android).

I don't see the logic myself, but a job's a job!
