Re: The Android beasts thread, 2014 edition

If I had to choose a smartphone for work (BYOD), then it would be a Windows Phone device without a doubt. Office is built into the phone so you can edit documents on the fly without conversion or weird formatting, and Lync, Outlook etc.. all work flawlessly on the communication front. Second choice would be an iPhone and Android last.

If I was the OP and if time was not of the essence then I would wait with my purchasing decision until after March 5th, the WMC should have a some interesting handset options coming out from almost all manufacturers.

Also and if non of the new mobiles phones are of interest, then at least we will see some discounts for the current/existing mobile phones.

iPhones are definitely at the bottom of the list for me, but your Windows Phone argument sounds appealing.

The Lumia 930 is still an option----and other advice or comments on it compared to the Z3 or Alpha?

If I had to choose a phone for work, I'd go with a blackberry.

Unfortunately, my provider doesn't MOTO, Nexus, or LGs.

Thanks to this good discussion on bloatware and TouchWizz, I feel like the Z3 or Z3 compact.

I'll have to swing by a store and manhandle them for person feels.

Went to a store to handle them a bit. The Alpha definitely feels the best from just holding, but the screen does feel a bit small when put up next to the Z3 and the S5. Those too feel kinda cheaply made compared to the Alpha.

Tomorrow I will have to decide, and I'm still stuck---maybe I should just sell out and get an iphone 6

Seems you like touch and feel more than what's inside: get your hands on a HTC One M8 before you pull the trigger. And be sure you like what you buy - after all, you will be using it for some time in the future.

The first consideration is of course what is inside---none of them really have stood out from the other in performance--even in this discussion--not one has been the clear leader---it was mentioned that it would come down to personal feel so that was the steps taken now.

The One M8 was not considered before---I'll have to check it out tonight.

I'm the OP and I'm not interested to buy any phone right now.
This thread is here to serve for an on-going discussion on what's available in the market.

Samsung Galaxy S5 offer of the day at Microspot for CHF 418.

With discount code "EARLY15" it ends up at CHF 403.

Re: The Android beasts thread, 2014 edition

Alright---thanks for all the input. It's countdown time now, and it looks like the Z3 is going to be the winner.....followed by S5, M8, and alpha if I go the compact route.

Any last comments, suggestions, etc?

Thanks again for all who inputted, this is the toughest decision I have ever made !

Don't overdo it for something you can replace in a heartbeat. Last minute suggestions would be scarce, as nothing new has surfaced but rumors of upcoming devices.

Now go, order so you can enjoy a weekend free of distractions

Good choice, out of all the others the M8 is my least favourite. Its coming up to a year old, the camera is not great and aesthetically I find the screen crowded out by the speakers/bezel/screen buttons etc..

Re: The Android beasts thread, 2014 edition

My wife bought a Z3 last week and so far is very happy with it. She like to take photographs and keeps commenting how good the camera is; especially in low light situations.

On the topic of Androids, I recently had a problem with my S4 getting very hot and using up the battery quickly. I down loaded one of the battery apps which pointed at Avast anti virus as the culprit. I deleted this and now get 2 or days out of the battery before recharging.

Anybody got anti-virus recommendations for Android?

I don't use one. I'm just careful with what I download

unless you're rooted and downloading cracked .apk files from sketchy sites, you really don't need one.

Get Android Kaspersky Internet Security, its light and effective with all the standard tools offered by other but it is not free so you would have to pay for it unless you have a Barclays uk account in which case you get a yearly code for free or got lucky and got a code from hotukdeals.

Re: The Android beasts thread, 2014 edition

Given that there are major announcements (from Samsung and HTC, at least) coming up in the Android world on 1 March 2015, it's time to start a new Android thread: The Android beasts thread, 2015 edition.
