Ask.com as homepage driving me nuts!!!!

hi you computer buffs!
for years I have had google as my home page. Recently for some reason ask.com keeps coming up. I have tried to reset from internet options but it keeps bouncing back to ask.com. It seems as if a redirect is being used.
I have IE 11 as my browser. Anyone else had this problem? Anyone know how to fix it?
thx

Re: Ask.com as homepage driving me nuts!!!!

Have you installed the ASK toolbar? It piggybacks on several regular programs and you can easily find yourself installing it by mistake if you're not careful.

It's almost bad enough to be regarded as malware imo.

Especially bloody Java updates, which are a complete PITA.

Re: Ask.com as homepage driving me nuts!!!!

Try removing the Ask tool bar first:

There is a good article here that shows you how to do so.

Go to settings -Manage Add-on's - Search providers and delete the one you don't want. You can also manage tool bars from there as well.

Thanks a lot for the tip.

For all people who are too lazy to Google for the option:

https://www.java.com/en/download/faq/disable_offers.xml

Prior to the Java 7 Update 65 (7u65) and Java 8 Update 11 (8u11) releases, to disable sponsor offers at the time of installation, the user could de-select the option during installation or can pass SPONSORS=0 as a commandline option. Starting with the 7u65 and 8u11 releases, a new Java Control Panel (JCP) option to disable sponsors is available. To use this option, go to the JCP Advanced tab, and check or uncheck Suppress sponsor offers when updating Java. This option is applicable to 32- and 64-bit Windows operating systems.

Many thanks. I have always religiously unchecked the Install Ask.com box for updates so had no problem, but this simplifies life a lot.

I'd thank that post if I understood three consecutive words in it.

Re: Ask.com as homepage driving me nuts!!!!

My name is timow and I'm a member of AA ....... Avoid Adobe (when there is a choice), so I use Foxit Reader for my PDF reader/writer and have sometimes found unwanted crap piggy-backing on updates - well it is free, so to be expected.

For open source software, I would recommend 'custom install' - not to necessarily change any of the default settings, but just to work through installation details, page at a time, in case any hidden nasties may be lurking.

When you are installing any new programs or updates uncheck all the " bloat " software that these buggers want you to install.

Just did my first Java update since disabling that damned "feature", and sure enough I was not asked to install ask.com. Once again, many thanks!
