Is there any benefit to swiss com?

Apparently my apartment has a swiss com connection which might be counted as part of the maintenance fees (going to try and clarify that when people get back from holidays).
This is not great news as my shopping around suggested swiss com were the worst ISP. They seem super expensive for quite generic connection speeds. Sunrise is the ISP that seems a better option to me even taking into account te painful installation cost.
I wonder, just what am I missing with swiss com? How can they charge so much for on the surface below average speed?
Is there some benefit to using them I'm not noticing with my concentration on pure numbers?

Re: Is there any benefit to swiss com?

Based on my experience with mobile phones, sunrise is cheap and swisscom is super expensive...but you get what you pay for. Sunrise coverage was patchy and internet was much slower than advertised and that's just not the case with swisscom.

I would imagine landline internet is much the same. I went cheap with cablecom (also due to a general aversion to ADSL) and regretting it...

Swisscom is not the cheapest provider, but Swisscom does deliver, and Swisscom support is the best you can get.

I have 40/10 bandwidth from Swisscom, and their very nice Swisscom TV 2.0 - and I am a very happy camper.

And, really, Swisscom does deliver this bandwidth a) on the line and b) towards peering partners. This I notice quite a bit for Google Drive where I simply get line speed performance - down and up.

Nothing. Swisscom are excellent. And in Switzerland you pay for excellence.

You should rather wonder what you are missing out on with other providers

Re: Is there any benefit to swiss com?

So I'm not missing anything and swiss com really is so expensive for so much less than it's competitors?
How is it still surviving? In the uk BT learned fast they had to be competitive.

I see a few posts against it but also a few saying it is fine. Nothing overwhelmingly against it.

Now I'm leaning towards city cable though. It seems to recognise my flat now where it wouldn't before

As this poster stated.....

I've been a Swisscom customer for over 25 years and I've only ever had two problems with them and both of the issues were sorted out within 24 hours. On the other hand I've heard of lots of problems with the other providers mentioned here. I'd prefer to pay a bit more and enjoy the good service. Thanks.

Re: Is there any benefit to swiss com?

Um, no.
It's a pretty big decision and it doesn't hurt to check other peoples views.
The "it's more expensive because it has good support" seems unusual if that's all there is

You, for yourself, need to decide what *you* want:

a) low price
b) very reliable services, very good products, and excellent support

Swisscom is b). Other market participants are on a). And then there are some in between (and I do not know of a single site which lists them all, sorry).

Keep in mind that sometimes there are product bundles - e.g., in the case of Swisscom, the "vivo tutto" packages (http://www.swisscom.ch/en/residentia...o-benefit.html)

Such a vivo tutto package gives you
- excellent unlimited mobile data on Switzerland's best mobile network (and Vodafone abroad)
- interconnect that will saturate the technical profile that you can get on your landline
- the best TV solution I know of (globally)

But, hey, it's for you to decide.

Once upon a time I was living without any TV, no landline (or DSL), and only on the cheapest available mobile data subscription. No longer.

Re: Is there any benefit to swiss com?

What is a 'low price' ? We have swisscom TV, FTTH (Fibre to the home), and telephone all bundled and our total bill is around 110-120chf per month.

That's pretty much what we have paid for telephone/internet since 1998, in Australia, and it costs 1/6 the price for us to phone Australia than for our family in Australia to call us, although mostly we use Skype for free and the FTTH gives a very stable connection.

Since upgrading to fibre, we are now much more aware of which devices are slower - before, everything just ran 'slow'....

We did not bundle our mobile phones - I use mine so little, and the kids we keep on very limited phone usage, so we all have M-budget prepaid...and only my husband has a smart phone with Orange on a plan that suits him...

FWIW, I have CityCable on the recommendation of a coworker and so far (admittedly only 3 months), the service has been great. (For me, it came down to CityCable or Swisscom. My biggest concern about CityCable was the service because my free time has value and I don't want to spend it shouting down a phone line.) I was pleasantly surprised; I've moved a lot, and I have to say that this was the first time EVER that I've signed up for telecom service where the service started on time, the internet is as fast and as stable as described in the brochure, and the billing was correct from the first month!

The only downside was that the brochures and contracts were only available in French, but some of the customer service people do speak English and were very enthusiastic about practicing their English with me. I was able to read the French well enough to be able to pick out the general theme of each of the different clauses in the contract, but I'm not near fluent enough to enquire about any of the details in French.

I can't tell you how responsive CityCable customer service is when something goes wrong though, because so far nothing has.

You should also know that they are installing fiber in stages throughout Lausanne. It's still cable from your street to the socket in your apartment, but you no longer will have to share the same cable line(s) with every one else in your street. This has made for faster internet even during peak periods.

Has anyone tried vtx? Wow.vtx.ch

Seems on paper to be a good alternative.

I was looking at them but considering you need line rental too the prices seem to come out rather comparable to swiss com.

I went to the city cable office yesterday to try and set things up.... They couldn't find my name on the system as living in my apartment . Back to city hall I go.
