Copy of your ID card to register for a phone?

I recently arrived in Zurich from Canada and went to Migros to set up a phone plan and then I got this e-mail:

Quote:
Dear Justiliang,

To help us process your request for a subscription, we require a valid copy of a document issued by the Swiss authorities card.

Please fax us up at 1/13/2015 copy of your ID card to the phone number: 031 939 84 59; or send by e-mail to: shop.mobile-online@swisscom. com

Do you have questions or need more information? Then visit our help page www.swisscom.ch/hilfe on the Internet.

Does anyone know what they are looking for? Will a residency permit receipt work?

Re: Copy of your ID card to register for a phone?

I've always shown a copy of my residence permit when getting a new phone etc. and this has been accepted.

Re: Copy of your ID card to register for a phone?

They want some form of official ID to confirm your identity.
I've used a passport in the past to get a prepaid mobile when I wasn't yet resident here.
You may need a residence permit if it's a monthly plan by subscription rather then prepaid.
If you don't have your actual permit yet then I would send them a copy of both the residence permit receipt and your passport.

Or you could just call them and ask them what is acceptable.

Re: Copy of your ID card to register for a phone?

Maybe, but take passport as well.

At one time terrorists were using anonymous
Swiss pre-paid phones, for international calls,
so they need a photo ID with your address.

It needn't have your address. I've bought several prepay sim cards over the years (cheap OK phone, freebies, ones to give to guests for their stay where I've subsequently lost the pin, etc.) and have always used only my passport. Only when looking for/extending my own contract to they want to see my permit.

Re: Copy of your ID card to register for a phone?

Passport would only work if one wants to get prepaid mobile Sim and one is a Swiss/EU citizen. NON Swiss or EU need to also show residency permit or travel document.

Monthly contracts for EU/NON EU need to also show some kind of residency document ie residency permit with picture or passport with residency permit.

Monthly contracts for Swiss only need to show ID or passport.

Re: Copy of your ID card to register for a phone?

going off on a tangent.. but this whole 'show us your residency/id before we give you a phone' is widespread and utter nonsense.. you should be able to sign a contract and be done with it... why.. why does anybody need to see proof that I am who i say i am just because i'm buying a phone ???

it's easily bypassed (get a friend to buy a 'pay as you go' phone) and obviously just an attempt to control "communication"... somewhere there'll be a few hundred people in a government department shuffling all that paper

puff.. pant... grrr

Don't talk total and absolute bollocks..

You show your permit, if you don't pay they can chase you for the cash.. nothing more.

Ah the blessed buffoonery of the ignorant...

They don't just want you to wave a permit at them to secure the contract... (else they could just take your credit card details) they want to copy down your address because nobody can own a phone contract without a valid Swiss Address.

After 9/11, when the terrorists were using Swiss pre-paid SIM cards, it became a legal requirement here.

At the time of the 9/11 attack in 2011 only the Swiss pre-paid SIM could make international calls, and at the time they were virtually untraceable.
Now if you buy one for a friend, and it is used in a crime, you might find yourself locked up for a while....

In the case of Prepaid-SIM cards, operators should register:
- name
- address
- date of birth
- type of identification document and its number
on the basis of a valid passport, identity card or other document that is sufficient for border crossings (presumably a laisser-passez and similar stuff).

Strangely you can get a Sim in the UK or Malta without any identification or registration, sure it's true of many other places. The 3 sim from the UK even offers free roaming in CH

Yes, but GCHQ still knows where you live and what you do when you think nobody is watching...

It's actually cheaper to use Data & calls in CH on my 3 sim than on my Swisscom sim, totally bizarre.
