Streaming movies from computer or hard drive to the TV

I need little help from the computer gurus here

I have a Samsung TV which is in my living room and is connected to a home network via LAN. If I plug a USB on it I can watch movies, but what do I need to have a separate hard drive in another room connected to the home network's LAN? Some sort of a NAS or just plug in a USB hard drive into the router? I would like to have lots of movies on my drive that can be accessed separately without turning on the computer. This drive will also be used for Mp3 files to be streamed to sonos speakers

Any good solution that makes no noise and heat?

Thanks

Re: Streaming movies from computer or hard drive to the TV

we just have a usb hard disc plugged into the router, obviously the router has to be designed for that works well, then on the TV side (also samsung) we have an android hdmi stick plugged in running xbmc they cost about £30 from ebay (quad core needed for HD films)

Tried the samsung in built media player as it was crap, kept stuttering and buffering, hence the android stick

Re: Streaming movies from computer or hard drive to the TV

I have a NAS capable router and when I plug in the external hard drive via USB works fine, when I am not watching the TV I see the drive is off, so it is a good solution I was thinking if having a dedicated drive connected via the lan like a nas would be a better solution if you want to stream movie and listen to music in one of the rooms if that would make bandwidth issues

The android stick running xbmc is just a OS to stream the files you have on the hard drive and nothing else?

I see a live TV stream named ROKU, is that available around here or is it US only?

I'll get that android stick now

Re: Streaming movies from computer or hard drive to the TV

Setup a Plex Media server on your laptop and use Google Chromecase to broadcast them to your TV. Works like a charm and it's dead easy to setup.

Chromecase only costs 20gbp or something. Been doing that for a few months and it's super easy.

You can even buy the Plex app on your mobile to manage the plex server from the couch if you are too bored to get up to have the next episode play. It costs a few quids.

Re: Streaming movies from computer or hard drive to the TV

Currently I use and old Mac to download stuff and then copy it into my iTunes media folder - from which AppleTV streams the file onto the TV.

It might not be the best solution - but it works for me.

(Although downloaded stuff sits in "Home Videos" which suggests "Videos made at home" in my mind)

well its android so it does everything android does xbmc can play streams or it plays it direct, we play them direct so we don't have any stutter issues etc the film is buffered into the stick

the reason we did this rather then chromcast is chromcast still need something to actually stream the video, and is only dual core, and it pretty limited to what it can do, the android stick route you can do whatever you want, get an air mouse at the same time and you're good to go.

Just make sure you get a quad core stick, I have a dual core version as well and although that will play some HD films ok the quad core (so far) hasn't had an issue, and of course you can play games etc on, netflix works ok, xbmc has plugins for the popular dodgy film streaming services etc etc

Re: Streaming movies from computer or hard drive to the TV

I have a NAS connected to my router which is accessible in all my devices with no issue. This is the best solution watching/listening to your media from your hdd.

I also have a streaming software (playon.tv) in my pc connected to my TV where i can stream anything without downloading.
