Re: In need of laptop recommendations

I've had a macbook pro and currently have a mac book air and I prefer the air by a log way. Go for the biggest ram option available available as at the moment you cannot change or upgrade the ram.

The retina display on the pro is nice, but are you really going to watch stuff on it to get the benefit, and it does sap the battery, i get 8-9 hours off the air, but the pro was more 4-5, and the screen on the air is good anyway.

Do you use a DVD/CD drive? if not then then they just add bulk and weight.

I don't store anything really one either machine, just have a small external drive of 500gb, which i use when i need it and as a time capsule to back up the system... JIC.

The only niggle with the air is no ethernet port, but as in 4 years of pro ownership only used it a couple of time, it's just an niggle not a problem for me.

Right click is easily enabled on the pro or air btw

Re: In need of laptop recommendations

Macbook pro retina: great screen, still very light, awesome power, flash memory, fast, reliable.

My experience of macs has been overwhelmingly positive. Basically, you spend more time doing what you want to do on the computer and less time having popups to deal with. The last version of windows I found very confusing.

My advice, go to an apple store and tell someone you are considering switching and could they give you a demonstration so you can feel comfortable with what you are getting.

The whole apple experience, from unpacking, usage, and customer service, has been top notch.

MB Pro Retina or Air. Added value that you get to laugh knowingly at the apple haters.

The camera is UNDER the screen in the bottom left corner (since it has thinnest laptop bezels ever) - enough to put me off since I use it often for Skype and don't plan to point people to my nostrils

Otherwise a very sleek device.

Asus also has some thin and light notebooks, and if the price is not a problem, I'd probably go for Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro

That was a puzzling place for the camera. I would like to hear the discussion that led to that decision.

Corsebou, we all know you fancy me. I am already married, accept it. No need to work so hard to get my attention.

Thanks guys for all the tips. I didn't know I would get so great reviews on the MacBook. I saw the air and I wasn't impressed with the lack of external ports compared to the pro.

Well, as far as I understood, they went on to cut as much bezels they could to fit a smaller footprint.
I guess so they could brag about being smaller than Apple's.
No room for a camera up there - even though it doesn't seem very viable to me, look at where do they fit them for mobile phones, and the laptop cameras are not more advanced than some of those.
2-5 MP module is for sure not too robust to fit.
Bad engineering.

Dislike, all in all

Re: In need of laptop recommendations

If you buy HP you should go for their upper models, like EliteBook, instead of their consumer line.

My next laptop will probably be from Schenker, mainly because you can customize it for what you need/want (including the keyboard, although it seems that they don't have the Canadian version):
http://www.mysn.de
And I think that I read somewhere on their site that if you have it delivered to Switzerland you don't pay the german MwSt.

Nevertheless I'd wait some weeks for the 5th generation of Intel Core CPUs, Broadwell, to arrive to the market. And if you buy Windows instead of Mac you'll be stuck with 8.1 (but Microsoft mentioned that one can upgrade free-of-charge to Windows 10 during its first year of release).

Re: In need of laptop recommendations

HP Probook 640/650 G1 seems quite well built for a fair price (check digitec.ch), including having the SSD
It's kind of an "entry" business line, not being as expensive as Elitebooks.
The only downside could be the screen, especially comparing it to MacBooks' retina displays.

Re: In need of laptop recommendations

chiliGreen also offer (albeit a bit limited) a 'configure to suit' option - and readily offer new laptops, still with W7 (for old cynics like me), or W8 with touchscreen, for reasonable prices.

I'm a bit skeptical about the build and keyboard quality of those "configurable" laptops - anyone has experience with their components housings?

I've only ever done it with a Dell in 2007 - with no problems.

In fairness the chiliGreen configuration options aren't vast - mainly processor, RAM, memory (HD and/or SSD), graphics, screen (I think) and OS - all easily done by manufacturer.

However, I don't seeing any advantage in price, compared with just selecting one of the normal pre-configured ones.

Well you could say the same about the older MacBook Pros. They all had a graphics card that failed (in our case after the warranty ran out).
Yes, and they'd rather take you to court rather than have it fixed for you at no cost to Apple:

http://www.seattlerex.com/seattle-re...verdict-is-in/

"At one point, the judge asked Apple how much it would have cost them [Apple] to have simply replaced my logic board when I had taken it in, and one of the Apple guys said “Oh, it wouldn’t have cost us anything, Nvidia foots the bill for each board we replace.”

The judge’s face almost hit the floor as he shot me a quizzical look, to which I just shrugged. I knew that he, and everyone else in the courtroom was thinking the same thing:

If Apple could have replaced my logic board at no cost to themselves, then why in the hell did they drag this out for so long, and why did they send two people to court to try and make sure that I got absolutely nothing? Friends, this is a question I have been asking myself for three months, and it is a question that I do not have the answer to."

Oh! And don't forget the Lenovo is 500 CHF more than the Air-obviosly overpriced.

I have a Macbook Air but I am not a fan of Mac OS and never have been. I bought it mainly because I love the form factor, build quality and the battery life is pretty epic.

However I was in Interdiscount last week and had a play with the new Lenovo Yoga Pro 3 and it is an absolute beast. Fantastic build quality, innovative hinge design and Touch enabled so you can use it as a tablet or PC. I would swap my MBA for one of these in a heartbeat.
