Re: In need of laptop recommendations

There's this 200 CHF off the 13" MBA "Action":
http://apfelblog.ch/macbookair-200-guenstiger/

but it's the top-end model.
I would say we will see the next iteration of the MBA in... 4-6 weeks.
The only thing that is pretty sure about it is that it will have even less external ports.

OP didn't specify a budget.

Unless you run a lot of VMs or heavy-lifting stuff with Photoshop, LogicPro, FCP then a MBA should be enough.
The 13" MBPs come with slightly more powerful CPUs and more powerful (integrated) GPUs.

Whatever Mac you get, get 8 GB of RAM.

Re: In need of laptop recommendations

OP was leaning towards Macbook Pro as it has more ports. I agree with that, and also think it is the better machine. better screen, hardly heavy, more power. Worth the premium over these other stupid HP or Lenovo pretenders.

I agree that the (13" I assume) MBP is very nice.
I think if you don't need to carry it around all day, the MBP will be "better".
And it comes with 8GB standard RAM, which should be enough to carry it through the next couple of OS X releases.

OP hasn't specified which peripherals she actually wants to connect.
MBP has 2x TB2 and HDMI, MBA only 1 TB1 (and the 13" MBA has an SD-card reader).
All have two USB3 ports.
I don't see much difference TBH.

Re: In need of laptop recommendations

Hey all, I'm looking for a new laptop and was hoping I could get a few recommendations.

I've been using the following work issued laptop for a couple of years:
Dell Latitude 6430u
Intel Core i7
8GB, 64 bit Operating System
Windows 7

As I am now leaving my job, I require a personal laptop.

I will use it for:
- Gmail, Hotmail
- EF
- Facebook
- Internet surfing
- Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

I am not:
- a Gamer,
- a serious photographer or
- a techie.

- I'm not a fan of HP, I don't like the curved shape and find them too bulky.
- I don't use MacBooks.
- I'd prefer to spend around about CHF 500.

I've been looking at the following Acer (currently reduced from CHF 899 to CHF 499):
http://www.melectronics.ch/p/de/Acer...&service=false

Any others you could suggest: ASUS/Lenovo/Dell? I realize that CHF 500 isn't a big budget but it's what I'm willing to spend unless it's really worth it to stretch the budget further.

Many thanks in advance.

500 CHF is absolutely fine for a laptop that will allow you to do the tasks that you have listed but you'll get lots of replies on here saying you ought to spend 2500CHF on the latest Apple (or similar).

I do not recommend Acer, the keyboards and batteries on the budget models are generally beyond awful.

ASUS and Lenovo are much better in those departments.

We're also on the look out for a new laptop, with a similar requirement (not a gamer or techie, only for work really and a bit of internet) so I'll follow this with interest, thanks.

Re: In need of laptop recommendations

PC/laptop preferences depend on needs.

I find Macs hopelessly overpriced and do not suit my computing. A halfway decent Windows PC is generally less expensive and more appropriate for my personal needs. That said, if your primary need is internet surfing, email and some light word processing, don't overlook a Chromebook. Very fast, cheap, virus-proof, and since it is cloud-based, bullet-proof. If you drop it or it is stolen, no worries: just buy a new one. All your data is still there. A great second machine, great for travel.

Re: In need of laptop recommendations

It's worth knowing if this laptop needs to travel or not. 15" budget 500CHF laptops tend to be heavy, not have an SSD and often lowres (yes, 1920x1080 is lowres now, and 1366x768 is so 2005). Also ask yourself, is the numeric keypad needed or not? It isn't for everyone.

13-14" models may be marginally more expensive but are usually below 2 if not 1.5 kgs these days, worth remembering for flying if you don't have or want a tablet. And whatever you do, don't buy budget HP or Acer, they're as bad as it gets.

P.S. and no Atom, Celeron or Pentium procs, you'll be swearing at that machine every day, which isn't fun if it has to last 5+ years.

i have an acer laptop and surprised by how good it is. for a very cheap machine, the battery is decent (6-7 hours), and keyboard is usable but not great (later model i have is much better). i actually prefer the keyboard layout to the asus layout. and as a bonus it is not too heavy at 1.4kg.

Excuse my ignorance but would you consider this ACER a budget model? (Reduced from CHF 899 - CHF 499)

I certainly don't want a crappy keyboard or battery.

Thanks a lot Brass. I've never used a chrome book so I've got to look into this. Any models you can recommend? I don't know much about cloud computing so it makes me a bit nervous.

Thanks very much Noth.
- It will hardly ever travel
- Numeric keypad is definitely not needed.
- I'm very happy with my 14" Dell, so a 13"-14" would suit me just fine. I certainly don't want anything larger than 15.6".
- SSD vs HDD. I don't believe I've ever had an SSD. My laptops have always made noise! Is it worth the extra expense? I would prefer faster performance and don't need large storage (will use an external).
- If 1920x1080 is low res, what is decent now?
- If no Intel Pentium processors, then what would you recommend?

Cheers Phil. 6-7 hours battery is better than what I've got now. What model of ACER (later model) is that?

I'm really sorry about all these questions but I truly am rubbish at this.

- Processors: for the cheap, get a Core i3, i5 for better performance
- SSD speeds up the system gynormously but the prices are yet to match HDD. 256Gb is enough, 512GB is better. And SSDs have no moving parts, they're just chips, so no extra noise.

- 3200x1800 is nice. Don't go for anything less that 2560x1440. The scaling technology is there, Windows 10 will improve it.

P.S: is this laptop not moving house but living on laps? If so weight (and sometimes heat, which no one can measure without trying) can be an issue.

Awesome thanks Noth.

It will be living on my lap.

If I was to ask you to recommend a 'decently' priced laptop to fit my needs, what would you propose, taking into account everything you've said so far? (range CHF 500 - CHF 1000)

Once again, merci for all you help!!

There's a reason businesses buy 1000+ CHF laptops instead of 500 CHF laptops - even if they have the same specs on paper.

Strange enough, it seems almost no "business"-notebook (as listed by digitec) has such a resolution.
The listing consists mostly of 13" MacBookPros and some HP/IBM Mobile Workstation models.
These are way outside the requested price-range, though.

Use a board.

I have a made for purpose one with a cut-out semi-circular section at the front, to accommodate my gut, and a padded underside.

Failing that, any appropriate sized wooden drawing or painting board, will work.

A board is good, because of heat, and ensures that the air intake for cooling fan (mostly on the underside) doesn't become restricted because of clothing, or draws in fine cloth particles (lint).

Thanks TiMow, I bought a laptop support from IKEA. Works well, the heat was really ticking me off.

If you don't mind chromeOS, this could be good: http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/...erchromebook15

though i guess you can install a different OS on it if you don't like it.
