Letter from Bilag

Hi, I recently received a letter from Bilag saying that I have to register with them within a month, and they also gave me a login name and a password that I can use to register (on their website). My question is, do I really need to pay retroactively? (I came to Switzerland some months ago but I have never been registered with Bilag, mainly because I did not know about this requirement). Is it possible they can find out the date when I actually came here, or can I say that I just moved?

Re: Letter from Bilag

You need to pay from the day you are using TV/Internet/radio.

Yep just register and pay, if you do not then they register a debt against you. Remember if you have a laptop or smartphone they consider that to be a "receiving device"

Not true.

Nobody can register a debt against you if they have not actually billed you.

Re: Letter from Bilag

I don't buy the whole "you own a laptop so you could be watching SRF on it" so for the time when I didn't have a TV I didn't pay Billag. Same goes for the radio license, I bought a new car which had a radio built into it, so by their logic I should be paying for that as well. I'm not paying for a radio license for something I don't use. I have never been fined for the radio and I have had my car for over 6 years. There is also no real way they can prove you are watching swiss TV on your laptop, so their threats are pretty weak.

When you own a TV with say swisscom or cablecom it's a good idea to get the billag for TV as they can fine you pretty easily as they can knock on your door and see your TV is on.

The whole Billag system is a bit of a joke and is also partially owned by Swisscom making the whole thing even more dodgier. A votes coming up soon to scrap the Billag and just make everyone pay a small fee in the overall taxes to replace it rather then having to pay these wannabe detectives snooping through your bins

Good post. Also to keep in mind, that if you own a vehicle with a radio, one would also be "eligible" for billag and "encouraged" to pay.

Re: Letter from Bilag

Also I wouldn't pay retroactively, they have no idea if you own a TV or a radio or used it for that period. It's up to you though.

I heard from a Billag guy directly they have no idea if you are actually using either a TV or a radio, this was when I was sick at home and I told him I had a TV that was only used for XBox. As he was being difficult I said I'll go upstairs and throw the TV out of the window if it would make him happy. He backed off after that, sometimes you need to response with rude swissness with rude swissness .

I don't buy
Are you saying that your rules are the only true rules?

How about: "I don't buy this tax thing"?

FWIW, Billag is only the collecting agency. The *law* is what the basis for collection. And, trust me, if/when the scheme switches to some form of "per household" flat rate, things will get more expensive. Because *everyone* will pay, and will pay for their little chalets on top as well.

For the record: I'd rather not pay for Billag. I do listen to the radio, I occasionally watch TV, I access the SRF web sites. So I do pay.

Re: Letter from Bilag

No, I meant I don't buy that I need to pay for a TV license just because I have an internet connection and there is an offchance that maybe I watch SRF, TSI or RTS over Zattoo or something. Even if I can't understand any of those languages and don't watch those channels.

If you own a TV or a radio and actively listen to swiss content you should pay for a TV or radio license here no question, but Billag just saying "oh everyone who has an internet connection should pay up" is taking the mick in my opinion.
