Multiroom sound systems

As playing music louder from livingroom is not an option and wearing a headphones is quite antisocial (or unromantic in other situations), am looking for a new way to to be able to enjoy my rock'n'roll accross my "mansion". Since I already have decent stereo system with 4 speakers am most likely looking for some sort of wireless speaker(s). Challenge just seems to be that most technologies can stream only to one device at the time (airplay from ipad) and some have very limited range (eg bluetoot)

Long story short, does anyone know if there is a box that one could connect the sound source via wifi, hdmi, plugging in normal sound cable etc. which would the pass this via wifi, airplay, sound cable etc?. Or is there better (affordable) solution which i should be looking at ?

Re: Multiroom sound systems

If you can handle some basic setup, take a look at logitech media server - it syncs over your lan(may do over net syncing too, but I haven't tried that). Open source, decent syncing and multi room. You can also use a variety of hardware for the server and clients, so can be as expensive or as cheap as you want it to be.

If you want a turn key option, sonos is still the standard, böse and Samsung have their own lines too, but I don't know much about them.

Of course if you're citing an ipad, then maybe just using the apple routers with airplay sync is the easiest for you.

Use one of those DLNA/AirPlay wifi boxes:
http://www.aliexpress.com/snapshot/3...30063432814303 @ 23.99USD
or
http://www.aliexpress.com/snapshot/3...30063432824303 @ 36.39USD

the first one you can use with LocalCast app. the second you can use it with EZcast app, it has a basic but effective built-in amp so simple speakers would also work with it.

this with a basic digital music source, would be an effective but cheap way of running your music throughout the house.

note: shipping from China is tax free (amounts below 68CHF) and the above includes shipping cost.

Re: Multiroom sound systems

Thanks both, unless I misunderstood something I think challenge that still remains is on how to transmit the sound simultaniously to both, to my stereo system and to another rooms (especially without wire). Eg Airplay only transmits to one target at the time. With that in mind maybe the easiest solution for it would be to find wireless speaker and somekind of audio transmitter to my stereos
OR get 2 of these http://www.aliexpress.com/snapshot/3...30063432824303

On later option would however still loose option of playing sounds from TV or any other "wired only" source.

Samsung & Sonos etc systems are all build to be used with their own speaker sets only and building a media server seems a bit heavy solution (allthou might be the best in the end, assuming could connect also wired devices to it)

To clarify my original post, would like to be able to listen the sound from which ever wireless or wired source (eg ipad, desktop pc, tv, phone, laptop, neighbors cat) in many rooms.
Currently I can connect all of these (except the cat) to my stereos but would need a solution to have the bass pumping in other rooms as well.

Read my 1st option again.

I have 5+ zones that can all play synchronized or independently. You can stream to a single one directly, or read from your device as a server and play to all/some.

The hardware driving the speakers ranges from old android phones,to a raspberry pi, to a laptop and the sound card on a server. If that isn't modular enough, what you want doesn't exist

Just an FYI: from the cast app, you can transmit to multiple number of boxes at the same time. also the EZcast system allows you to connect from ios/Android/Windows even the cat (if it is a digital one)!

But to be honest, if you want a perfect all into all from all type system without a specific ecosystem ie Samsung, Sanos ..etc, then you need to keep on searching. Having said that I think you would be wasting your time as such a system does not exist!

Re: Multiroom sound systems

in case anyone else is planning similar system Ive chosen to go with single wireless transmitter option. To clarify the setup:

Living room
Stereos with airplay and bluetooth support (one would be enough)
Tv connected to stereos with hdmi
Desktop connected to stereos with normal audio wire (or hdmi as i sometimes watch movies online and stream them to my tv)
Ipad connected to stereos by using airplay
Phone connected to stereos by using airplay (second phone by using bluetooth)
Laptop conneced to stereos by using bluetooth

Bedroom & kitchen
Second stereos (my old ones). Was also considering
just getting a wireless speaker with 3.5mm plugin option

Getting sound from livingroom wirelessly by using this device by connecting it to zone 2 on my stereos
http://www.amazon.co.uk/audio-pro-WF.../dp/B003U5LEZW
(there are also much cheaper devices available and setup doesnt take more than few minutes and most can be connected either to zone 2, tapeout or even headphone plugin)

Not saying if this is best option but in the end very simple and also affordable (only additional cost is the transmitter which is 50-200CHF depending of the model) Also it fan be scaled to more rooms simply by buying more receivers to transmitter unit.

If you hadn't already had a receiver with a 2nd zone, and a 2nd receiver, that's a potentially crazy expensive route.

for straight forwards multi room audio, a simple UPnP server (I still advocate logitech media server for synced streaming) on your pc, coupled with a few old phones, old computers, raspberry pi etc. with a client renderer loaded (a lot of options support airplay), would do the same, or better, without the need for additional receivers.

Re: Multiroom sound systems

Well of course it always depends what person already has. With media server would have saved money from transmitter but would have needet to spend money on second room speaker (eg it would need to support wireless technololy) Also would have needet to have PC that runs the server.

2nd zone itself is not needed as the transmitters can be plugged to almost any output, allthou its handy to have in case one wishes to play different audio on second room (eg watch a movie on living room and listen music on kitchen)

If I would have large budget and start building from 0, would have most likely gone with Denon wireless system (similar to Sonos or Samsung) but thats just personal preference.

Its also good that there are options for everyone

Re: Multiroom sound systems

The market leader in this area is Sonos. Expensive as hell, but very good quality. You can get a device that hooks up to your existing speakers.

I started out with one Play:5 in the living room, then added another to get stereo. Then bought the playbar for the TV. A few months later I added two Play:1 and a Sub to get 5.1. Then went for a Play:1 for the bedroom. Every time I go to MediaMarkt I want to pick up one more... these things are addictive.

Re: Multiroom sound systems

Airplay will stream to multiple devices at once, works great, why not go for that?

Re: Multiroom sound systems

No it doesnt, not from ipad or iphone except with additional software which may or usually may not work that well. Also it would not work if you would like to stream to all rooms from "non apple source", eg; tv, pc, vinyl player, radio.

I have to say that now that i have my whole system installed, this is maybe one of the biggest home improvement ive done in long time. Also would assume neighbours to like it as the overall volume i use has dropped dramatically.

Why not try buying a Mac Mini as a media centre then? Very cheap and capable and AirPlay works to multiple devices simultaneously.
