No Internet services available at new Oerlikon address?!

I'm hoping one of the local Internet-savvy folk can help clue me in to what's going on with my new flat in (Neu?) Oerlikon.

This is the first time I'll be living alone in Zürich, which is both thrilling ("yay, no more housemates!") and terrifying ("I have no idea how this works in der Schweiz..."). My first major stumbling block is Internet. I had assumed the hardest part would be picking a provider and accepting that I now have to pay Billag.

Instead, I keep getting rejected with (e.g. from UPC Cablecom):

"No services available at this address."

Err... NO services?! Ouch. Last time I ran the Sunrise tool, it basically told me it couldn't find anything. Not quite as bad sounding, but certainly not good.

As far as I know, the building is rather new (but I'm certainly not the first tenant). Any suggestions how best to figure out what my true options are?

PS There's also green signs outside and big holes in the ground that seem to indicate that EWZ fiber is coming... well... eventually. Though I did notice my building had a red X instead of a red circle like the buildings next door. Not sure if I'm just unlucky??

This is something you check before signing the contract. Ask your landlord what is available.

I thought EWZ also handle normal connections, on top of the fibre-glass being built around the city right now..

Probably best to contact them directly or check their website.

Use the search engine on www.ihr-kabelnetz.ch to find your cable provider.

Knock on a neighbours door, say hi & ask them.

if you have an iphone (maybe others also) there is a possibility to use "personal hotspot" From the settings. Since I have unlimited internet access I use that instead of a separate provider. Your laptop will then use your phone as a router and you can use the wifi on the computer.

Re: No Internet services available at new Oerlikon address?!

Thanks to all for the good information! Some quick replies...

@nickatbasel -- I would not expect to have to check that Internet is available in a dense neighborhood any more than one would ask "Is there running water in the flat?" That said, I do have a query out to my landlord, but he could be sufficiently clueless about Internet things. I wanted to get a more general opinion of the various resources I might use, and what I might have done wrong using the obvious tools thus far.

@herc82 -- Apparently I still don't quite understand the relationships here. Does EWZ own the infrastructure (cable, phone, fiber, all?) and then allow you to connect with various providers?

@MajorGrubert -- great link, thanks! Though it, too, gives me nothing. It *does* however, say that the building next door is UPC Cablecom. So I suspect my address simply isn't in the system yet. I sent a message via their contact form to (hopefully) get the straight dope.

@Anthony1406 -- I've used a hotspot with unlimited phone data in the States, but I most definitely don't have such a package here... quite spendy at first glance! Long term, though, I still need a permanent connection for the flat even when my phone is away with me. Good suggestion, though!

Re: No Internet services available at new Oerlikon address?!

Interesting thought, neddy... can you provide more detail? I'm a little confused about this "door knocking" approach. Can I do this any time? What if the door doesn't open... can I still say "Hi"? How long should I wait before asking? How much does it cost to ask? Do they take USD or credit cards? If they look scary, can I still run away?

On second thought, I think I'll stick to the writing my questions to random people ont the Internet... it seems much less complicated!

Just don't knock before 9am, after 10pm or at Halloween. If they take credit cards you have a Thai massage studio next door. If you ask how much it costs, you may get a smack in the gob. Or they may suggest you pay with Paypal.

Note that no Internet provider other than Swisscom is *oblidged* to cable a building or an apartment.

It is unclear whether you are in a house you own or rent or in an apartment you own or rent.
In any case, the service provider has to physically have cable into the building to be able to provide services.

In this day and age the cabling choices are:
  1. Copper Telephone line (Swisscom)
  2. Cable TV network (upc cablecom)
  3. Fiber optic cable (Swisscom and/or EWZ in your area, I think)
The only cable that is guarranteed is the Swisscom copper telephone line, often know as the plain old telephone cable. All other cabling methods are optional, and depend on the building owner.

If the building is a rental property and the property owner, for whatever reason, did not want the building cabled from any other provider, then your choices become limited to whoever can deliver Internet down the plain old telephone cable. You are not limited to Swisscom, because loads of companies use the Swisscom copper line for their services: Sunrise, Green, to name a few. But the copper phone line technology is old and thus speed is limited.

Of course, there is always the chance that the address database for the provider you checked with is incorrect. To confirm this, simply knock on the door of other tenants in the same building (if any) and ask them who they use for Internet. That will give you a good idea of what is available.

Good luck!

Re: No Internet services available at new Oerlikon address?!

Quick update, odd twist...

Contacted the old tenant, who said he used Swisscom Internet from the phone line (ADSL, I'd guess?) He specifically stated that he was not able to use Cablecom.

Also contacted the landlord, who has one of the apartments on the ground floor... who says he most definitely uses Cablecom as his Internet provider there.

So now I have a situation where a single building has Cablecom available on one floor but not on another. Does that even make sense?

I'm thinking I'll stop by the UPC Cablecom office today or tomorrow to ask in person. And next time I'm in the flat, I guess I'll ask around and add a few more datapoints to my picture.

yes it does, in some apartments within a building block, the owner/tenet can decide not to pay the 29CHF monthly fee to have a cablecom socket enabled (also called connection fee)hence they close it and forgo the fee, note this is nothing to do with the fee you pay for the internet/phone/TV from cablecom.

you should contact cablecom again and ask them if the case above is indeed the situation, but your landloard should know as he/she most likely pays that fee or indeed authorised the cable disconnection.

Note: if the above is the case and your wall connection was simply sealed, you can unseal it and by only paying the 29CHF (if not in your tenet agreement) you actually get free basic TV, a phone line and free 2MB/s internet.
