Cablecom Basic Offer

Hi everybody
Just a quick question: I moved to a new apartment and have ordered the CableCom Basic Internet offer, I don't need very fast internet and I figured I would give it a try and see if it's not impossibly slow
The only problem I have is that I need Wireless Connection, since my computer doesn't have a LAN Port and I would like to connect the phone as well. Does someone have any experience with it? Is it possible to use a Wireless Router with the Modem they send you? Or are there some kind of limitations?
Thanks a lot for your help!
Roberta

Re: Cablecom Basic Offer

Hi Roberta,

Its possible, no issues there. Just connect the wireless router to their modem via LAN, and it works. I've been using it like that for years, and never with any issues (and as an added bonus, you wont have the "UPC Wi-Free" hotspot in your house, which is - almost - mandatory for all cablecom users having the standard wireless router from UPC).

I am not very expert so I was wondering if you have any suggestion for a wireless router. Or should I just walk in a MediaMarkt and ask them for the cheapest one? I guess with 2 Mb speed, anyone will do, right?

Re: Cablecom Basic Offer

I am using cablecom basic offer since last 3 months. It is sufficient for watching 720p YouTube videos. I connect my laptop and mobile with a wireless router. I use lot of internet apps on my mobile. I do a lot of skype calling as well. If you are buying a new wireless router I would recommend buying a dual spectrum (2.4 GHz/5 GHz) router as 2.4 GHz is very congested now a days.

Re: Cablecom Basic Offer

I doubt you would even find such a slow router.

I'd say faster is better, just in case you ever want to copy files from your phone to your computer via wireless or something. Even if you dont have a big bandwidth to the outside, it still doesnt do any harm to have it on the inside.

I'm using this one (bought from that seller, but sadly not available anymore):

http://www.pc-ostschweiz.ch/product-1a15844143.htm

Its not the best regarding signal quality, bandwidth or anything, but it was cheap, it had a decent encryption (WPA2-PSK (AES)), and its still warming up the bedroom just nicely, years later.

Just going into mediamarkt for the cheapest one, might be the fastest solution, but for sure not the cheapest one. If you have a bit more time, and are willing to order online, I'd suggest this one:

http://www.pc-ostschweiz.ch/Netgear-...2a18547466.htm

Its cheap, fast, and good enough.. (Probably I'll get my head bashed in later from other users, saying its crap and suggesting something else, but hey.. at least for me I'm sure it would be perfect).

Re: Cablecom Basic Offer

Hi guys, and thanks again for your help!
Just wanted to let you know that I got the modem today and surprisingly it is a WLAN Modem (despite what is written on the website ). So well, no need for a router, and it seems like it's working quite well until now!

Have a great weekend

Re: Cablecom Basic Offer

A year ago they were definitely sending wired-only modems to subscribers of their basic Internet. Maybe they ran out.

May be they want to spread wi-free indirectly. I also got wire only modem three months back.

Re: Cablecom Basic Offer

I got a wifi modem two months back, same model as the paying people get.

Downside is that your router sends out the UPC Wi-Free hotspot but you cannot use it.

Re: Cablecom Basic Offer

You can disable the UPC Wi-Free hotspot on your router, but then you cannot use it on other people's routers with your account.

Re: Cablecom Basic Offer

I'm moving to a new place next month and also considering the basic offer as I'm not a heavy user and it's a decent price (and I believe no set-up fee?).

It sounds from here that it's pretty good, and 2Mb is fast enough for me. Would you guys who have it recommend it, or is it worth paying the extra for more speed?

I use Zattoo for TV and play online games occasionally...

Re: Cablecom Basic Offer

Hi Enohzee,
The setup was really easy, I have just ordered the option online and after a couple of days received the wireless modem completely for free with no set-up costs. And in addition you also get Horizon Go for watching tv from your computer (not sure exactly how it works, I have never used it).

I have been using the 2Mb internet for about 3 months now, I find it completely ok for watching movies and series in streaming (no loading time for normal quality, a bit slow for higher quality like 720p). I also use video calls on skype with no problems, but I have never tried online gaming. The speed is mostly 2.5Mb, sometimes a bit slower loading pages in the weekends, especially in the evening. But no major issues

Hope this was useful!

Sounds great and it's so much cheaper than the standard packages. I'll sign up

Could you post a screen shot of a download test from speedtest to have some details?

I had it a while ago and regularly scored 1.95-2.05 / 0.15-0.22 on speedtest. I do unfortunately not have any screenshots left, but it delivered what they promise.

However, it seems they have some stupid QoS policy for these users. Speeds on the afternoons could be so bad that it was not even possible to load the Speedtest website. Pinging google meant about 300ms latency and 60-70% packet loss. I switched to 20/2 and all problems was gone. I guess that is what they want you to do.

They probably deem these "free" connections scavenger traffic. They say nothing about a minimum throughput or latency.

Re: Cablecom Basic Offer

Cable connection price increase announced

Quote:
The new monthly subscription fee for the 3-in-1 cable connection will be introduced no earlier than 1 January 2016 and will be CHF 33.95/month (incl. VAT). The tax amount agreed with the Telebasel Foundation will also apply in the region of Basel.

To improve the performance of our glass fibre optic cable network even further, we are constantly expanding it. We would like to ensure that you will continue to receive the best-possible Internet service in the future together with even more channels offering prime HD quality. This long-term expansion of our services means that our digital offer is now used on the most varied of terminals (TV sets, smartphones, tablets, PCs or games consoles) and that Internet usage is also increasing considerably.

The necessary investments and increasing operating costs will lead to an increase in the basic price for the 3-in-1 cable connection. Radio tariffs are not affected by the price adjustment and will remain at CHF 14/month (excl. VAT).
If you don't approve of this price increase you can cancel your contract.

Re: Cablecom Basic Offer

Well I signed up to the basic offer for my new flat and I'm happy with it so far. Decent speed for surfing, good enough for streaming and what you would expect from downloading (200kb/s). Service seems consistent though which is better than I expected for 30chf per month I'd say it's not bad!

Re: Cablecom Basic Offer

To share my experiences also:

- I finally got online a month after ordering. To be fair the delay was on my part: needed a technician to visit but was away when they called several times, so had I been available: closer to 2.5 weeks

- I got a WLAN modem

- Speed is fine! Works for Skype and Netflix, and probably faster than my old BT package in London, which was 3-4x the price

- As I pay through a local partner of UPC, the price is a scant 24Fr pm. No activation fee, and no fee for technician either for completeness.

Conclusion:

If your bill doesn't exceed a certain amount (IIRC CHF 50) they won't send it also by snail mail, so I'd check online for those fees
