((o)) Geneve Ville - WiFi

Hi all,

I went on a exploratory stroll down to the lake and found that a number of apparent free WiFi spots are either not switched on (switched on perhaps only for summer) or faulty.

I came across the following article & municipality website detailing this free service but found it to be out of action.

http://www.geneva.info/free-wifi/
http://www.ville-geneve.ch/themes/en...s-verts/acces/

Given the costs of mobile data through the usual Sunrise/Orange[Salt] networks (not to mention the other dominate Telstra like enterprise) I thought I should utilise these services - however their not active.

I walked right around the southern end of the lake comprising Jardin Anglais right up and past the Jet and wasn't able to find the '((o)) Geneve Ville' network anywhere.

Does anyone know if this is still active? or perhaps it's a seasonal service only.

Cheers all.

Re: ((o)) Geneve Ville - WiFi

There should be free wifi at the airport/Train Station(from the SBB), in the terminal and maybe in mc donalds/Starbucks aswell other cafes/Restaurants/Hotels.
But I don't believe there is free wifi in the city itself.
You would need alot of hardware to provide Wifi in the complete inner city, it will be really expensive, maybe at some places, but not the complete city.

Re: ((o)) Geneve Ville - WiFi

Thanks for the response. Yes, agree with the cost of deploying across an entire city centre.

According to the council website, it does indicate free wifi and includes a map with specific locations. While I haven't tried them all I do remember using free wifi in a square in Paquis in 2013. I was interested to see whether anyone else is using this network, and where..

I'm trying to limit tethering my mobile data and Starbucks experiences. 😉

Re: ((o)) Geneve Ville - WiFi

I think I might have answered my own question..

This website contains a current map indicating which hotspots are active and which are faulty. The ones around the lake appear offline while most are active in town.

Maybe the ones around the lake will become active when the weather gets better.

I can't imagine anyone wanting to sit down there when the Bise is blowing!!

Re: ((o)) Geneve Ville - WiFi

This is true.

I can confirm that the old town is up & running, Place du Bourg-de-Four in particular.
