blu-ray player and netflix

I am a know-nothing about streaming media like Netflix and Amazon Instant. Currently I watch say Youtube, Zattoo on a Macbook. But I want to get a dedicated device and hook up to a monitor and get a Netflix subscription.

Here's my question. I see various Blu-Ray players with a number of internet services offered as part of the standard player interface e.g. Samsung has some players with an interface called 'Smart Hub' which lets you go to some less well-known streaming media services. But if I buy a Blu-Ray player like that, will I also have the capability to connect to a service that I want like Netflix, outside the given interface? Or is there some reason why such players limit what services can be connected? Thx for help.

Re: blu-ray player and netflix

Can't speak from personal experience, but AFAIK, the Samsung Smart Hub feature on a BluRay player should work in the same way as it does on a Samsung Smart TV (which I have), so it should work.
Home wifi network is required though, or direct LAN cable connection to router (or powerline adapter).

An alternative is to use a Chromecast (or similar) dongle.
TV HDMI port, USB or nearby power socket (for power supply) required and home wifi network.

Cost +/- 50 chufs.

Personally, I find the Smart Hub feature slow and 'heavy' and subsequently don't use it, preferring to cast with tablet or phone, with Chromecast.

If you're in the market for a BluRay player anyway, then a Samsung with Smart Hub (or comparable other) should be fine.

Re: blu-ray player and netflix

Yes it should work, our samsung bluray players gives you all those options and allows you to install 'apps' like netflix, but just be aware it will know exactly where you are, so no installing nexflix america or spoofing the IP etc etc and frankly they are crap at playing anything from my nas let alone streaming, they just don't buffer enough. So I use an android stick instead, much better

Re: blu-ray player and netflix

I bought a Sony BDP-4500s (Blu ray)just for watching Netflix and it works very well and is very easy to use. The remote even has a "Netflix" button - couldn´t be easier!!
I also purchased a google chromecast for our tv in the bedroom and it works very well too - simply stream from the Netflix app via my iphone or ipad directly to the tv and in good quality. I would highly recommend both

I use a Samsung HDD/DVD for exactly that with no problems. No buffering, no problem. The Netflix app was built in.

Thanks for the tip about using an Android Stick. I had been reading about problems with dropped connection in some of the reviews for Blu-Ray players. An Android Stick looks like amazing cool technology to avoid that. I found Rikomagic as a maybe good brand, but do you have recommendations?

p.s. Yes I am aiming for Swiss Netflix. I read both good and bad comments (here on EF) about the selection but anyway I was going to try the free trial.

Thanks for the post! For those who live outside USA and want to access Netflix, you can use UnoTelly. It changes your IP address so you can get US Netflix.

I use the rikomagic stick, you'll need the quadcore version for HD playback, beware of fakes too

Thanks for the tip to beware of fakes. I only saw the Rikomagic stick at no-name online shops so far so I'll look further for a reliable source.

And that's the second time this week that I saw a warning about counterfeits of a brand-name product. Don't tell me that faking is now spreading beyond dodgy Rolex watches and designer handbags - too many 3D printers out there.
