Desperately need help with chosing new TV

I bought my last TV in 1996 and haven’t used it for several years. Now I want to buy a new one and feel completely helpless as to what to buy. The size should be between 100 and 106 cm and I am looking for what is called ‘haut de gamme’. I had satellite television for Astra 1A and Astra 1D before. Whether these dishes are still working properly I can’t tell since the house next to mine was being rebuilt over a long period and the scaffolding made it impossible for me to watch TV.

I would be very grateful if you could help me to find my ‘ideal’ TV.

A Samsung Smart TV everytime, prices have come right down now. You can connect via Satellite, use an aerial or plug the TV into the internet and watch TV via Zattoo or other providers.

Re: Desperately need help with chosing new TV

My LG Smart TV died on me after only 2.5 years. Now I have a a Sony smart TV. Hoping that it would last longer than the previous one. I would steer clear of LG based on my previous experience.

You know what? Just don't buy one. There's only junk on TV nowadays anyway.

I lived for about 4 years before moving to Ch without a TV and felt much better. Only have it connected now to learn French, otherwise still find it pretty useless

sound quality. They all have pathetic speakers so that one has to always buy additional ones. Probably done on purpose

Yes its 80 % junk. One has simply to be fussy about what one looks at. With the recording funktion and film rental it offers a lot

If you buy a new TV, then the shop will inform the Billag. May be one reason to buy a second-hand device or import one. Don't forget that having a TV doesn't automatically make you liable to pay the Billag (see other threads on this subject).

Are you sure? - I can never remember my personal details being asked for.

Certainly, with one bought 3 years ago, and another, bought earlier this year.

However, I've never bought a new TV from a 'normal' electrical retailer - all 4, that I've ever bought here, have been from supermarket type stores.

I'm not sure about that. We've never had any contact from Billag after buying TVs here and we bought a couple without ever having paid Billag. Only one place even asked for our name and address so I'm not sure how it would even be possible for the others to inform Billag of our purchase.

They do however contact the licensing authorities when you buy a TV ( or TV receiving box) in the UK who will subsequently get in contact with you regarding licence fees.

Billag is compulsory and not paying can result in a very big fine. They have regular controls. And why should I pay Billag and you not.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Did I say that we don't pay?

We hadn't ever paid when we bought the TVs because we didn't need to at the time of purchase but we were never contacted and invited to pay or visited by them afterwards either which leads me to believe that they were not informed.

you must pay billag if you have a tv, a radio or a computer with internet access.

I recall my wife telling me that when she first moved to zurich at the age of 18, she did not have a tv and decided not to pay Billag. One day as she arrived home from work two billag inspectors were waiting and informed her that she must pay because she has a radio and a computer...

Samsung smart tvs are good.

I have a Pioneer plasma tv that is bout 10 years old. Very basic tv but the colors are very good and so I make it smart by connecting with a HDMI to my laptop. This way I watch what I want when I want no commercials. The SMARTEST tv ever.

Well the conversation sounded a bit like that.

Pleeeeease - we all know this .... there's a long enough dedicated thread about it.
Let's not get sidetracked (even more).

The question raised here, is whether Billag is informed by retailers, after someone has purchased a new TV.

This has been suggested, above, but the accuracy of this statement is being questioned.
