Mozilla Firefox malware warning

This evening, when I tried to open Firefox on my Mac mini, it directed me to a very official looking webpage supposedly from the police stating that my IP had been used for nefarious illegal purposes (child porn, illegal downloading etc). I was unable to navigate away and was threatened with legal proceedings etc unless I filled in certain payment options.
Obviously this is some kind of Malware and I was unable to leave the page or quit Firefox. My only option was to Force quit from the Apple menu. I'm not sure where I picked it up; I use Piratebay and my kids often visit movie streaming sites, so that could be an option. Anyway, uninstalling Firefox and using Chrome or Safari seems to have solved the problem.
Just a word of warning to anyone out there to not get fooled by such pages.

Thing is, how do I perform a registry clean-up in OS?

Be grateful you weren't using anything windows. Some versions of this can be absolute pigs to clean. Possibly format-reinstall level pigs.

Having sold my soul to Google, I still get a twinge of smugness whenever I open my Chromebook and read about such things.

No need as there is no such thing on Mac OS.

The page you got is a scam, as you obviously worked out. In future you can refer to here to bypass it.

If you have the patience attempting to leave the page 150 times will also clear it - at least in safari.
