where do the ethernet ports go?

I have a rented a new apartment.

I'd like to get things straight in my own mind before calling an electrician for swisscom. Attached picture is what the sat/phone socket looks like.

Could someone make an educated guess at what the wires are. The connected coax is a hotbird (sky italia) connection. Is the other one likely the same or not connected? (the owner says I can put up an astra dish).

The RJ45 wires, are they usable for swisscom internet? Or are they only good only for analog phones? I have one RJ45 in each room (three total).

I ask since at the previous apartment the internet came from a 'F socket' (like satellite) so am wondering if the other coax is for internet. There are also UHF male/female sockets in the kitchen/bedroom and I've no idea what they could be for either.
There is also an empty pattress box next to this one (the owner talked about pulling cables through) would this be more likely for internet? is this kind of install expensive (>500chf)?

Not expecting straight answers.. Just an idea of what I should be asking the electrician to do..

Re: where do the ethernet ports go?

Well, one of the coax-es comes from upstairs and the other one (disconnected) goes downstairs.

Otherwise I can't say much really. Does the building have some kind of internal network facility? What makes you think the RJ45 is related to Swisscom?

Picture of the front would help too

Re: where do the ethernet ports go?

the owner kept on talking about swisscom, so I assumed something might have been prepared.
the front of the panel is a cat-5/rj45/ethernet port with 6 pins. but as you can see the cable is more like an internal analog phone, so I'm guessing there is only an internal wire going to the other rooms.

I will talk to the owner again before calling anyone.

Re: where do the ethernet ports go?

I don't think there's enough information here. Need to see the front of the wall plate, at least. As it's a new apartment, someone must know exactly how they are intended to be connected. This isn't information you should have to pay for - there's no point in paying an electrician to find this out for you.

Have you tried connecting two ethernet devices to the RJ45 sockets in two different rooms? Can they see each other?

Downstairs one could be Cablecom - use their website to see if you're connected.

Re: where do the ethernet ports go?

Dig around your apartment, does the electrical box have a panel with the 3 RJ45 ports? It would be very odd to have your RJ45 ports wired to something out of the house, it sounds more like a setup for in house networking.

Note, just because you have 4 wires and not 8 doesn't mean the port won't function as a regular ethernet port, you will just be limited to 100mbps speeds on that line as you only need 2 pairs for 100mbps.

These lines probably terminate somewhere in your house...

It seems like you can likely get internet over your coax (cable internet). The UHF I'm not sure what it would be for, but could potential be for radio antenna.

Pulling cable through can be done yourself (you can buy the lube/dish soap and pulling line yourself at Bauhaus or something), but sometimes it's a royal pain in the ass, pending how the builders ran your conduit.

I think there's a missing piece of info on where these RJ45 connections terminate Explore!

very good. I was thinking they went outside. I found some more panels, and now I think I understand how it all works.

The box with the coax has a male-male joint connecting the live sky-italia. The spare one must be what I see behind the pattress (sala=lounge).

The phone stuff has only blue/white connected. I stuck a multimeter on it and there are no volts. The cable with some pink pen also has 'T T' written on it. putting the meter on green/black pair is also zero volts. still, what happens when the internet is hooked up? the parallel connections will be useless I guess? (any small POE hubs I can stuff in there?).

sky dish seems something I can do myself. I'll try and poke around on the roof and figure out where the conduit comes out...

Re: where do the ethernet ports go?

ok thought of something. I'll just bolt the 'grand central' to the wall by that plate, means I can connect phone or ethernet as I wish to each rj45.

well it would seem normal that the owner should do all that for you!

It's a phone line, NOT Ethernet.

Don't use it for anything else.

Re: where do the ethernet ports go?

Here's is a diagnostic approach which might help.

When trying to work out the wiring, should I:

a) Ask the landlord.
b) Employ an electrician to find out.
c) Post a photo on EF and then read through a series of random answers from anonymous, uninformed foreigners.

Hint: option a) is looking promising.

the ports are ethernet, but the wires ~were~ obviously for analog phone.

I now have internet working, I didn't touch the connection box. this means the ethernet sockets are now useless - since they are nothing more than parallel connections to the back of the 'grand central'.

as eluded in my last post, I will mount the router on the wall next to the connection box, then replace the 3 cables with real cat-5 cables.
I can then plug them in as I wish and use them for phone (rj11-rj45 converter) or plain internet.

for the answers.. a) landlord obviously knows the wiring makes no sense.
b) electricians are $$$.
c) given enough monkeys, one will be the bard of avon.
