Thinking of buying IPad Air 2 for phone features

Is this a good idea?

My 8 year old phone broke this weekend, if the more sociable would like a good laugh, it was a nokia 1028.

Anyway there is some business case for me investing in better phone apparatus.

Can you recommend the iPad air 2 as a business phone? anything you wish you had done differently? more memory? no! get another iPad or iPhone?

Can you talk on it while it is charging? (i don't need to multitask on it, one task at a time, phone or some other task, would be nice though to multitask but i don't think this is possible with iOS or is it?

Can you buy a prepaid/pay as you go abonement for it?

When I look at it on the apple.ch store, it does not look like you have to choose a 'cellular' telephone provider, does that mean its sold unlocked?

Thanks for your help.

ps I also want to use it for gps navigation when cycling traveling (so i need wifi i think)

An iPad is way too big to use as a phone (as it isn't a phone) or for cycling navigation. You'd be better off getting an iPhone 5/6 for both (if you want to stay with Apple).

ok, i get it its big,
i was thinking more an at home phone solution, charging, propped on the desk,
not really a talk on the go type all the time sort of person, but who knows it might come to that so yes i have to take size into consideration.

ok, my bad, i thought that was the phone part. so the only way to use an iPad air is maybe Skype?, not what i was looking for though.

i really don't want to buy the iPhone, i don't know why, just looking for alternatives. I like android even less and blackberry don't like the cost too much either.

Yep - any VoIP app, such as the included Facetime (which does audio only if you don't want to use the video part), Viber etc. And if you have a cablecom landline there's an app to allow you to receive and make calls using that number wherever you are in the world. Kind of cool.

I've used Skype, on my iPad, to phone, in the past.

Soon there wont be much size difference between a 5.5" phone and 7" iPad mini ..... about one and a half inches to be precise.

An iPad Air 2 would be obsolete in 3 years anyway.

If you've not already bought into in the Apple ecosystem then, even though you don't like them, it's worth a look at the midrange android handsets, or for deals on last years top of the range. The vast majority of them would have the features that you need.

Even though I am an iPhone user I find them difficult to recommend to somebody who doesn't have a lot invested in iOS Apps due to the high price tag.

With smartphones it's basically a 2 horse race between Apple and Android. If you want a decent selection of apps they're the ones to go for, as the blackberry and windows app stores are pretty threadbare in comparison.

Buy a cheap Pay-as-you-go phone for 20 CHF. Buy a GPS for your bike for around 250 CHF.

You didn't mention why you thought you needed a Smart phone.

Or buy a Huawei for around CHF 250 or an S4 for about CHF 350 and only have one gadget that do both plus can also play MP3s, take photos, etc., etc.

True, but...

Cath was worried about obsolescence - a phone with no features will never become obsolete (plus they normally have clip-in batteries) and a GPS cycle computer will still work as a GPS cycle computer for as long as she wants.

Re: Thinking of buying IPad Air 2 for phone features

With a cycle computer, most (any) modern smart phone will work as a gps unit.
In fact, some keen cyclists who dont want to stump up cash for a special bike computer buy old(ish) smart phones, JUST for this purpose.

If you want it as a 'satnav' with mapping and directions, then you have to be careful with data charges, and you will be lucky to get much more than a 4hr ride out of an iphone. (Plus the cost of buying a waterproof handle bar case/mount).

If you are just using it as a 'traking' gps to find out where you went/speed etc, then using an app like strava or mapmyride etc uses no data, and battery life will be sufficient for a full days ride. And you can stick it in a zip lck bag, in your pocket, so you dont have to but any waterproofing stuff for it.

These guys;
http://road.cc/content/buyers-guide/...ling-computers
Have just done a review of gps cycle computers starting from £50 gbp.
Might be worth a read, as i think all of them are available in Swiss-land.

I would say yes you can. iPhone and iPad both use iOS, though slightly different builds. Some of the firmware can be shared between the devices, so they are very similar. You just need a good Voip app. I use my iPhone 4s as almost as though it is an iPad. I don't use the phone features, only the internet to make calls over 3G using voipcheap.co.uk's free app in the appstore. This runs on ipad too. I use sunrise surf costing 7chf PAYG per month and have enough data for voice calls (250mb). There is free wifi at train stations etc if you need big data for emailing pictures, etc. Most friends have WIFI at home and my phone switches to their net automatically if I am in the vicinity!

For incoming calls I normally use Virgin Mobile (UK), in a Nokia 1110 or similar. Battery lasts 7 days. Virgin calls are free to receive in Switzerland, and it is cheaper to call a UK mobile from Switzerland, 2p (using voipcheap) than it is to call a local Swiss mobile.

Most of the time I ring out to the UK or Germany, land lines are free to call and mobiles just 2p per minute!

If I am stuck for data on the move then I use the 4s as a hotspot, and buy a 1GB data addon packet for 20chf.

So I don't see why you can't do the opposite, or run the same apps I use but on an ipad.

Well she was worried about obsolescence on a CHF 1000 iphone - a CHF 350 S4 might be a different matter (yes, I know it's 2 generations old already). Plus the battery is also exchangeable (no idea about the Huawei).

I don't recall that Cath is a mountain biker (therefore not needing trail maps) so I would imagine Google Maps or Nokia Here maps would give sufficient on and off-line coverege to meet her needs.

Honestly for a technically undemanding person there's no reason a smartphone shouldn't last as long as a dedicated GPS. UNLESS waterproofing is essential....(even then there are posssibilities)
