You can buy a new latest model Motorola Moto G with 5" screen and 4G for less than 200 francs. I bought one a few months ago and it is brilliant. It can do everything you want and more.
That one only has 8GB storage, isn't it?
And people complain about the 16GB of the iPhone 6+...

Also, battery capacity is only 2070 mAh (vs. 2915 of the iPhone 6+).
And the battery is fixed ;-)

The MicroUSB charging slot will mean that it will rather sooner than later break and need to be sent in for repair.
But hey, for the price of an iPhone 6+, you can probably by three of these and use them as spares ;-)

All in all, you usually get what you pay for.

Where did you buy it from? - I couldn't find the 4G on Toppreise or Digitec.
I also thought that the latest had 4.5" screen(?) - which would suit me better.

Link to UK seller site: http://www.three.co.uk/Discover/Devi...8&colour=Black

Have you used the front-facing camera, yet? If yes, how did you find the 1.3 MP resolution - i have about the same on my Android phone ..... and it ain't brilliant.
That's what drew me also to the M$ Lumia, was that both front and back were 5 MP.

ETA: I must have been confusing it with another one, as it is on Toppreise - but it still only offers 4.5" screen.
ETA2: I now see Conrad have a 2nd gen. 4G, 5" on offer - but with card fees and shipping takes the price to over 210.
I actually bought mine from Amazon.de, had it delivered to a german address just across the border, picked it up and claimed the sales tax back from Amazon. With all costs included it came to 175 francs. However, as we da man points out, it's possible to get it at a discount price from several outlets in CH.

The front-facing camera is OK but not brilliant. For me that was not important feature.

Right - but you shouldn't really compare it with an 850+fr phone. If you are not buying it for the status then the Moto is far far better value for money.

At the same time I bought a 32GB SanDisk Ultra storage card for 11.99€ (less 19%).

I don't think I'm ever going to want to remove the battery and I see no reason why the charging socket will break.

You can usually get a new SIM and keep the number.
You just can't have them active at the same time ;-)
I've never changed my number here and did change SIM-size once.
My provider (Aldi) offers alternative SIM sizes - for 20 chufs .... just not sure of the logistics as to when the new one becomes active and whether the old one can be used again, as you suggest - as I've yet to do it ..... will get the phone first, then the SIM.

It depends.
I like iOS. And I like Apple's hardware. I'm not sure I'd buy someone else's hardware, even if it ran iOS. I don't run a hackintosh, either. Even though it's possible.
It's not such a large amount of money, considering that I easily get three or four years of use out of one - and the contract is usually much more expensive anyway (paid by employer in my case).
People buy much more expensive stuff (like cars) that usually has a gigantic deprecation after three or four years.
That said, I'm still on the 4S. But mostly because I like it's form-factor.
And I usually only buy the 2nd generation iPhone of a series.
But I also admit, 1k for an iPhone is a tough call.
At the same time, I'd go nuts with an Android phone (not using Google).

AFAIK, the SD-cards are no full replacement for internal storage.
You can't store software on it, only data.

Because it's not designed to be used as a charging socket (handle a thousand plug-in, plug-out events, the bending, twisting, the mis-plugins, as it's one-sided...).

You'll remember my post soon enough.
Or do you use wireless charging? Haven't checked if it supports that.

Re: Recommendations for second hand phone please

I absolutely love my iPhone - I can't imagine not having it now, and that comes after 6 years or so thinking I didn't need one. (my first was iPhone 5 in 2013). I now have the 6+ and I love it even more - can't even imagine how I used that miniature 5

However, I realize that the 200 CHF budget might be the limiting factor...

Me too, 6+ all the way. However, if I wanted to spend less, and stick to Android, I would go for the Huawei P8 lite at 250 CHF as the spec is really good.

I'd say look at Galaxy S4/S5. S4 should be easily available around the 200 range.

Re: Recommendations for second hand phone please

So where to go to actually try phones? Coz when I've been to melectronics or interdiscount, the phones are not turned on, they have some plastic Image sticker stuck on them and you cannot Play around with them like in an Apple store. Are there physical shops where I can Play around with phones?

Perhaps the "shops" of Sunrise, Orange, Salt.

But note that the above shops may only carry the latest models, which I understand may not fit your budget.

Maybe Mediamarkt, Mobilezone, Fust.

I've decided that I'll probably go for the Motorola Moto G dual SIM, 2nd gen. 3G from Fust online shop priced at 169,00 (no shipping charge).

If you're not desperate for LTE/4G, this seems the best price around at the moment.

http://www.fust.ch/de/p/pc-tablet-ha...e-8153474.html

Otherwise single SIM Moto G 4G with Android 5.0 Lollipop is 199,95 (plus shipping) at Conrad.

http://www.conrad.ch/ce/de/product/1...omSuggest=true

In making my choice, I've relied a lot on the comments of those who have purchased, on these sites, and I'm not too worried about holding it, physically, in my hand.

Re: Recommendations for second hand phone please

Have you come across the Oneplus One? New, it costs $299 but worth the budget increase, if you can stretch to it. Spec-wise it easily matches premium android phones double the price. I got curious after it made several tech sites' Top phones of 2014, and it is every bit as good as the hype (provided you like your screens big, and removable storage / batteries aren't a must though with the 2 day life I get on mine and 64GB, it shouldn't be a constraint to most).

The only issue is getting your hands on one - it is the only model made by what was a start up company. It's the only phone I've seen that has risen in value over the past year You may be able to pick up a second hand one cheaper (eBay shows a few in Europe bidding at CHF 150 now).

I agree a good spec. phone for buck - however, after consideration, it's a bit too big for me.

The good news is that it's now available at Digitec: https://www.digitec.ch/en/Search?q=Oneplus+one

The bad news, is that it's well over the OP's budget - and more expensive than the £,$,€ equivalent price.

[Edit - seem Digitec have re-started!]

What put me off them is that the company have a very poor reputation for service. Phone quality seems to be more or less OK but if something goes wrong you're basically screwed. Doubly so if you have a grey import in Switzerland.

There are probably better and easier ways. Electronic goods are easily and effectively recycled.
As previously suggested, the battery in a second hand phone may need replacing, so you could have to discard the old one - which is probably the least environmentally friendly component of a phone.

Yes, I've heard the same. It's a gamble I took and what I expected with a fledgling company. Apparently they have made recent improvements, but I have no experiences to go on - just happy mine has stayed in shape! https://blog.oneplus.net/2015/04/imp...tomer-support/

That depends on the company doing the recycling...

Don't know about other manufacturers.
Anybody got links?

Re: Recommendations for second hand phone please

When I was on my new phone hunt, the best place to go to handle the goods was the Swisscom shop. The models were in working order, the staff were knowledgeable, and each phone had a ticket pad so you could tear off a ticket with the spec on to take home. Its a great system, which allowed me to compare models and prices in my own good time at home.

Re: Recommendations for second hand phone please

Having previously waxed lyrically about the Moto G, when I went to order, I found out that my wife and daughter had maxed out my credit card, so I had to look for a bricks and mortar, hard currency alternative.

Subsequently I found what appeared to be a good solution from smeggy Steg.

M$ Lumia 640 dual SIM, with 50 chufs reduction at 139,90 ..... and one available at my nearest store.

http://www.steg-electronics.ch/de/ar...-18751012.aspx

Spec seems, good and comparable to Moto G (except OS, obviously) - same processor, RAM, memory, main camera (front camera is only 1MP - but I'm not into selfies) ..... but with a better battery capacity.

I like to be different, so am happy to go with the Windows (at that price). So far I'm quietly pleased - but much to get used to. Transfer files from Android seems to be catered for (yet to do) and it looks like I can have pretty much most of the apps. that I had on my Android - if not exactly the same, then similar. Windows Office is a bonus (but licence is only for first 12 mths.)

Storage micro-SD card up to 128 GB is good - although 128 card costs nearly as much as the phone. 30 GB free cloud storage, too.

Screen res. and speed is good - but as I have to change my SIM size I've yet to connect and am only on wifi, and wont move files until I 'm properly up and running.

Unfortunately, castable apps. like YT and Zattoo seem to have lost their ability to cast to Chromecast (although it is showing as available under wifi network) - but I may just have to change settings. Not a big deal, at the moment, as I normally use iPad, anyway.

All in all, it seems a good phone for the money - but there is limited availability at this price - I think old models are being cleared to make space for the LTE model (maybe?)
