Advertised internet speeds are way off

I'm renting someone's apartment who handles the internet for me. She's subscribed to a package that says it's 25Mb/s thru Citycable, but it is definitely not. Speedtest.net and speedtest.ch put it at 2 Mb/s down, and - what's killing me - is that it's only .2 Mb/s up.

So I'm going to request an upgrade, but I have no idea how this is being measured to decide which one to pick. Is there some kind of conversion? Why is this net so slow? I'm thinking of springing for the fastest 300 Mbit/s down package and hoping that helps, but I would like to get a sense of what that will be in actual terms (there's also a 150 Mbit/s option that, on the face of it, should be fine).

I know speeds aren't always as advertised (I technically had 24 Mb/s down, 8 Mb/s up back home, but it was really more like 8-10 Mb/s down, 2-4 up), but this seems very far off.

Re: Advertised internet speeds are way off

How about the simplest approach?
Call/mail/write/flag/smoke signal customer support http://citycable.ch/aide-et-support/internet/ and ask why you only get the basic free for all speed http://citycable.ch/internet/gratuit/ and not what you are paying for?

Re: Advertised internet speeds are way off

It is via WiFi - should it make that big of a difference? The speeds are the same as the gratuit package, though, so I think there's a problem on the ISP's end. I asked my landlady to look into it.

Re: Advertised internet speeds are way off

Unless you measure it with your PC actually plugged into the cable modem all bets are off and cablecom will refuse to help until you try that; wifi speeds will vary tremendously.

Also if your wireless unit is plugged into older switches and hubs then the signal degrades further, I have a 125Mb package and only get that on one machine where I ran cable to the built in switch of the cablecom box, everything else gets about 50 or less.

Makes a huge difference. Even in favorable conditions, a Wifi-N network will rarely deliver above 5 MB/s. Sit on the router, and you might get 10MB/s if you are lucky (and if you have a multi-channel router/card).

In congested environments with multiple networks etc, it's not unusual to see ~2MB/s as you are seeing.

You can try reconfiguring the router to a different channel, this often helps. Download inssider or similar software to check which channels are not congested and then try that.

In any case, if you want full speed, you need a wired connection.

Re: Advertised internet speeds are way off

What does the provider promise to deliver ? Mbit or Mbyte ?
The difference between Mbit and Mbyte is the factor 10(around), so if the provider promise to deliver 50 Mbit/s, you can get around 5-6 Mbyte/s Download.

Re: Advertised internet speeds are way off

The factor is precisely 8x ... one byte = 8 bits.
And the transfer of data involves additional 'technical' data flows of the TCP/IP protocol etc. which eat up a bit of the capacity.

Call Citycable's support line at 021 315 8888, they'll be of help. Clearly there's been an administrative error on the connection speed, it happens. Write down the cable modem/router's serial n & MAC address beforehand since you won't be able to provide the customer number.

Re: Advertised internet speeds are way off

he wrote megabit (Mb, megabyte is written MB) which is the usual way to indicate internet speed.
anyway yes do a "wired" test just to be sure.
