Can't get rid of Bluewin pop-up [resolved]

I'm working on fixing FIL's computer. I have it mostly cleaned up, except when the computer first boots there is a pop-up I can't get rid of:

Bluewin DSL: Please insert your DSL disk into the CD Tray to continue installation

It seems like at one point he wanted to be on Bluewin's (now Swisscom, I think) network or something? We have no disk and neither has he. I searched for files, hidden and visible and can't find any file or program to delete to get rid of this pop-up. I searched Google and that didn't yield anything helpful either.

Any ideas?

PS - I know it's not affecting anything major, but FIL needs as few distractions and things to click as possible so I'd like to remove it.

Re: Can't get rid of Bluewin pop-up

Might be worth trying (downloading, installing and running) something like Malwarebytes or Spybot Search and Destroy. Both are free or have free versions.
Filehippo is a good place to find them and download from.

Both are quite good at sniffing around gently in the registry to find crap and either remove or quarantine it.

Do you think it's actually malware? I ran malwarebytes a few days ago and it got rid of tons of stuff, so I ran it again today and it was clean.

Probably not, but it could be something in the registry that needs getting rid of - CCleaner is another option .... but check all the options and settings, before running otherwise it clears out everything from browsers - history, downloads, passwords the lot.
But again the registry checker is not too harsh.

Re: Can't get rid of Bluewin pop-up

Have you tried looking at running processes and services in Task Manager for a likely looking program or service name?

Edit : 2000th post. I never thought I'd post so many.

Re: Can't get rid of Bluewin pop-up

Thanks, guys.

Found and removed one registry file, two temp files, and a folder full of files - none of which had the name Bluewin but that I found by looking at processes, etc. and then matching up the icon on the pop-up to them. All clear on the reboot!

Good job!

It's definitely a <crappy> program that was not properly installed!

I'm serious, you should charge people Fr. 100.-- to 200.-- and fix their computer

Must soon be time for another flounce, then, back to year zero, again.
