It's not weird that lower MP cameras take visually better pictures. Not only do they offer better low light images as Adrian already explained, but for the same reasons they also in general offer more colour accuracy and vibrancy with less noise.

The MP wars is simply a metric that marketing drones use to make their camera look better than the competition's

And, seriously, unless you're working for National Geographic, there's no need for a camera above 8 - 12 MP because all you'll be doing is pushing pointless pixels around and wasting space on your phone and hard drive.
I saw the most gorgeous frog the other day, light green with brown speckles, it hopped inside rather than away so i had to pick it up to put it outside, i was quite close to it, but if i wanted to take a picture of a frog or a hedgehog in the wild , you can't get too close or you scare them off but you still want some nice detail on your hedgehog right? or the cats in the fields, (i find my local ones quite charming, like little field panthers) , i think for swiss wildlife photography or bird photography its handy to have high mp-age.

Re: Smart phone with best camera?

Problems with using crop on small objects are (a) what slaphead says - resolution is there but quality isn't the best and (b) the camera probably won't work out what you'e trying to take a photo of, and focus (and do light balancing) on something else.

So you'll end up with an overly bright or dark blurred noisy frog. Or you could get lucky. Try to quietly get closer or use a proper camera

Re: Smart phone with best camera?

I have just had to send in my iPhone 6 in after less than a year to be repaired. it was not reacting to my touch and was increasingly problematic as time went on until it stopped working completely. I can't recommend the phone. The photo features were fun, but really, completely dead after one tear ???!!!

It is an electronic device. Failures happen with ALL brands and models.

That's why you have a warranty.

You'll be lucky if HTC makes any phones at all this time next year.
The stock market thinks the company is worth less than its cash-reserves...

hmm, one of the things on the g4 is that there are more camera manual controls than other phones, it may be possible to use them to overcome any/some of these problems?

I noticed the cropped pics from the g4 are surprisingly good, almost better than the whole picture sometimes!

so I'm not sure cropping will be a big problem, that may just be a bit of 'its not real photography snobbery' that you get from some photographers. they can't accept the high end phones are getting almost as good as the 'real' cameras and any idiot can now take a good picture.

Re: Smart phone with best camera?

To be honest, Cath, from the photography you say you're interested in doing I think you're going to have a tough time doing it effectively with a phone camera.

I know it's not the equipment, but the photographer that makes the difference. However the typical camera configuration on a phone is very much less than ideal for capturing the kind of things that you're talking about.

I know you can get zoom and macro attachments for phones and they can make the camera more versatile, but it'll be a pain fitting them and removing them every time you want to change for a different shot.

Have you thought about looking at those superzoom cameras - all major manufacturers have at least on in their line up. Personally I think they may be a better solution for you.

hmm...

i don't want to take a bulky camera out thats not waterproof and that in addition to a phone... on the off chance a particularly gorgeous snail or slug crosses my path, its not really fast or convenient enough for me and will take the joy out of photography for me, the everyday surprise of things (rather than deliberately stalking swiss wildlife), but i guess I'm not a 'real' photographer.

Have you had a look, in depth, at the premium phones cameras? They have come way along this year.

Re: Smart phone with best camera?

Snails and slugs aren't known for their speed and evasive manoeuvres; you'll be fine lining them up and taking a close photo with a phone :-)

The iPhone also has some kind of attempt at manual controls - you touch the screen where you want to focus and light-meter read and then you can adjust a slider to make the shot brighter or darker.

As a tip, try to under-expose rather and over-expose as the former is easier to correct in the standard editing tools.

I completely hear where you are coming from, and the quality of photos you can get from modern phones is outstanding, but you have to remember that they have a fixed focal length lens (not a bad thing in itself) and are optimised for selfies, family, landscape and holiday snaps, and not wildlife photography.

Re: Smart phone with best camera?

yes, it did interest me, there was one second hand on ricardo the other day but i thought no because there have been reports of dust getting in the lens.
I don't think its waterproof either.
I tend not to be precious with my stuff so id have to be super careful, i don't think i can change that much.
It was definitely a contender though.

I don't think the camera is as good though..
but to be honest its still really very good, but is the difference really so important, i ask myself?

lots of s5 pics

lots of g4 pics

here are some drop test videos too, its shocking how fragile they both are. whatever i get it will need a protective cover.

Re: Smart phone with best camera?

You could also consider the Lumia 930. Its camera has half the megapixels as the 1020, but the rest of the specifications are much better. The camera app also allows to alter a lot of settings manually.
I do not own one, but I am thinking of getting one.

yes, i checked the windows phones out a bit, the 930 only a little, the 1020 a bit more who can resist 40+ mp (It appears I'm a sucker for specs), i can't seem to get over my dislike of windows to buy a windows phone,

just fyi, i thought the 1020 was 700chf on topreise but now in amazon.com, you can ship the yellow one to ch for 318usd, thats an amazing price i think, so if you wanted the 1020 (i didn't like the pics a lot) you can get it for only a bit more than the 930 in ch!
its tricky, i'm almost tempted myself.

The camera is fine for your needs, you're not a techie or a photographer and the camera is very similar to the one in the S6.

As for the drop test, it's an expensive electronic device, what do you expect? You should put case on every phone to help protect it from drops.
