Smart phone with best camera?

Phoning people, Taking pictures, ugh, mostly a waste of time, but for some reason I want to join these losers with no life, oh my mistake that is life, the reason being I saw the most gorgeous f.a.t enormous perambulating caterpillar (i mean enormous, the size of a sausage) on a bike ride and wanted to share it with everyone everywhere it was so amazing.

It seems these are the smartphones with the 'best' cameras.

lumia 1020 (20+mp) disappointing pics 700chf
lg g4 (16mp / 8mp) 500chf
samsung s zoom (20+mp) 380chf disappointing pics plus dust in lens problem
samsung 6s (16mp / 2mp) 540chf low light disappointing
blackberry slider (20+mp) 600chf? not out yet but i don't trust blackberry to make good camera software, or waterproofing so not sure i want to wait and miss another caterpillar experience.

Its weird but the ones with the higher mp don't seem to take the best pictures according to online reviews. This guy who does some good comparisons.

I think i'm going for the lg g4 because it goes some way to being a work hard play hard smartphone (ok it gives you the option in my case) ,
It has waterproofing that the s6 and the others don't. so you can take it out on the bike and a bit of dust and wet won't kill it.
it appears to have a bright enough screen to be used in sunlight.

Anyone else buy a smart phone with the main eye for the camera quality? Is this a crazy thing to do?

Re: Smart phone with best camera?

The new iPhone 6S (due Sept) is said to be 'the one' for photography, edging closer to DSLR quality in a smartphone. For me the iPhone has always lagged behind everything else for manual photography, but with everything set to 'Auto' it becomes truly sublime.

Re: Smart phone with best camera?

I've used Xperia Z3, iphone 5s and blackberry z10.

The Z3 definitely had the best camera, and apps for editing and special shots. The blackberry was second in normal light, 3rd in dark situations.

The best function of the Z3 was the slow-mo camera and the 4K camera. But as many phones now have this--do note they take up a ton of memory, and memory extension options are where the companies are starting to screw the consumer over

yes, its kind of amazing because the old 6 is an 8mp camera, its something to do with the software, so what apple has done is bump up the price a lot for cheaper hardware but improved software, or thats what it looks like for me.

the new one with the new super camera specs plus software.. then it might be worth twice the price of the competition ?

samsung is also releasing new stuff this week? a note 5? and s6 edge plus?

They may all have the camera

but can you use them say when you are rock climbing and its raining or biking and its a bit of a drizzle, can you drop them in the toilet or the pool..? The waterproofing is quite important at that price i would have thought? people seem quite gutted when their phone doesnt work after a water mishap.

I am also considering the LG G4... it looks very well featured, water resistance is a bonus, and I lurvveeee the brown leather back. Wireless charging can also be added very easily, and the screen is amazing. In the high-end class of phones for 550chf it looks like a strong contender imo. The only off-putting thing is that the battery life is reported as unimpressive.

It's a choice between this and the significantly cheaper 370chf Samsung Galaxy S5, which in all fairness other than the screen resolution and some meaningless specs is just about equal to the G4 and has better battery life.

lol don't be daft it will not be anywhere within sniffing range of a DSLR... maybe a basic modern point and shoot camera, but then only just.

its a tricky one, he says here on auto g4 is better but the manual comparison again though i think the lg g4 in lowlight wins, you never know when you want to take a picture of a caterpillar perambulating by your creme brle or friends while you are having your dinner in a restaurant in low lighting? and flash seemed a bit more detail?
its pretty nice, i like the shape better than the lg g4

Re: Smart phone with best camera?

I don't mind the fact an iPhone as an 8MP camera; the less pixels, the larger they are. The larger the pixels are, the more light they capture. The more light they capture, the better low-light photos are.

For me, I hate using a flash (especially the pathetic ones on phones, but even when I used to use a "proper" camera I only used a flash if needing to freeze-frame something) so low-light photography is important.

Although it can be replicated in other tools (such as dropbox) I like the way Apple handles photos in the cloud. I took a long holiday a few months ago and for the first time didn't take either a "proper" camera or a laptop. The idea that each time I hit a wifi spot the photos would upload to the cloud (in essence backing them up) was a relief. It meant if I lost my phone, or it got damaged I wouldn't lose the photos. Using my previous cameras I was always worried the SD or CF card would get corrupted (it happened to me once and I lost a day's photos).

Now, with the latest OS X and iOS, I like the fact any edits done to the photos are synchronised. Once I get home I download all the photos to my laptop and delete them from the cloud.

the iPhone (probably other phones too, but I'm not familiar with those) do some clever things that are hard to find in proper cameras, such as automatically taking a burst of photos when you use the timer, merging two together to create an HDR image, geotagging the photos etc.

If you want to take high quality photos, use a decent camera. If you want to capture your life in images, a phone is perfect. Personally, I don't see myself buying another digital camera and it's quite depressing to realise how little the one I currently have is worth in resale value.

Re: Smart phone with best camera?

Other input about the z3 - It is 'waterproof' but the little doors don't always seal very well---never had a problem, but my trust isn't 100% there.

It is big, THIN and slippery, so not always easy to hold in a camera position. The z10 and the iphone were a bit thicker and more comfortable to hold.

I dropped the z3 once, and it shattered and bent---one gone, a second one got stolen (I guess irrelevant to this discussion), so I'm not sure if i'll get a third or wait for the Bberry venice.

Also the z3 has a SD card port, so you can increase the memory whenever you like which was ideal!

Re: Smart phone with best camera?

It's not weird that lower MP cameras take visually better pictures. Not only do they offer better low light images as Adrian already explained, but for the same reasons they also in general offer more colour accuracy and vibrancy with less noise.

The MP wars is simply a metric that marketing drones use to make their camera look better than the competition's

And, seriously, unless you're working for National Geographic, there's no need for a camera above 8 - 12 MP because all you'll be doing is pushing pointless pixels around and wasting space on your phone and hard drive.

you could walk into your local mobilezone.ch and plonk 500chf down, it seems one of the cheaper sellers in ch, its a black leather back but that may be a plus, will show less dirt if you take it on your adventures too.
500chf its still a lot i don't know how i went from searching for the cheapest smartphone on amazon huawei y330 70chf to a 500chf one

There is one good reason for having more megapixels. High MPs allow you to crop further which is useful as most phones have wide-angle lenses and no optical zoom (digital zoom is just cropping and again works better the more MPs you have available).

I would get the brown. I love brown leather.

However I think the Samsung Galaxy S 5 is ultimately the best price/performance option available at the moment. It's cheaper, very well featured, and I love those AMOLED screens they are so easy on the eyes.

I really want the venice and i want it to be good...

but when u say compare the blackberry passport photos to the iPhone 6, the iPhone 6 wins imo.. i think historically, comparing blackberry cameras to the competition, the competition is always? better, yet the blackberry is mostly more expensive. so it just doesnt give me confidence they are taking this camera thing seriously,
I just don't understand blackberry, they sell to business minded efficient people, don't they think these people also like to play hard? do they think they are just selling to male/female executives who go from one hermetically sealed environment to the next? this is a v.e.r.y small pool of people, the rest of us try and get out a bit i would have thought.

you don't want to get too close to a tiger on your safari at the zoo but it would be nice to get some nice detail imo.

I would have liked to take a pic of that caterpillar without getting off the bike and stooping down (not exactly 'play hard' but never mind).

That only works if the lens can actually resolve to the pixel pitch of the sensor, otherwise you just end up with a blurry crop. There's a good reason why the starting price for quality DSLR lenses is around 1'500 for the most basic models, and then rapidly goes north from there.

You can't tell me that the mass produced cheapo lenses that find their way into phone cameras have the resolving power to deal with 20MP especially given that the pixel pitch on phone camera sensors is so incredibly small.

I found it interesting too, but on the design front the g4 looks a bit cheap to me so i think i would have to put a nice looking protective case / battery extender on it to make it look a bit better.

anyway another thought

for lefties, are the buttons on the back of the g4 better for lefties? it seems to me it might be more physically or mentally logical? than the normal side buttons.

It definitely doesn't feel as premium as a 6+. Also in terms of taking consistently and easily excellent pictures the 6 and 6+ are better than the G4.

G4 is good if you don't mind a little tinker with the pictures...but I find the auto mode provides consistently dark pictures in not ideal conditions.

Re: Smart phone with best camera?

I've read that the iPhone 6 (and probably the 6 Plus, too) has the overall best camera.
It's not the best in any discipline, but neither has it got any "weak" spots.

http://www.heise.de/ct/ausgabe/2015-...s-2748549.html

It's not waterproof.
I guess that's reserved for some future incarnation of it.

There will quite likely be a new one announced September 9th.
