Re: IPhone 6S in Switzerland

Hi,

walked past the Apple shop in Bahnhofstrasse. Looks like Apple are using the same tactics as ever, get people to queue outside the shop even if they have reserved a phone or want to order a phone.

It is clever as it makes people think that they are selling better than they are. When it comes to marketing and controlling supply Apple are the absolute masters.

What shocked me is the prices of the phones unlocked, those these new phones are a bit more expensive for Apple to produce :$234 for 64Gb version.

Have fun
Martin

Re: IPhone 6S in Switzerland

Managed to order the iPhone 6S Plus yesterday from Conrad - with 12% discount! Let's see if they hold up their end of the bargain and I actually receive the phone for that price. It did manage to bring down the price to less than 4 digits...

my wife reserved hers at the Apple Store in Glattzentrum - there were about 5 people waiting and she was in and out in under 10 minutes.

Re: IPhone 6S in Switzerland

Apple TV 4 is all about Siri. And Siri is not enabled on Apple TV 4 in Switzerland. Bummer.

I can imagine people going into the Apple Store on Bahnhofstrasse and trying to talk into the remote... "hey it does not work???"

What I am keen to know is, can I buy an Apple TV in the UK or Germany and then bring it here to use with Siri?

Re: IPhone 6S in Switzerland

I'm looking for an excuse to buy the Apple TV 4, as my previous one died a few months ago but I can't see much point, as I don't subscribe to Netflix anymore, HomeKit integration still is completely lacking and that there will probably be a pitiful range of games available. So where's the selling point?

Re: IPhone 6S in Switzerland

The selling point is the fantastic implementation of Siri! It seems really quite enhanced in it's functionality over Siri on iOS devices. e.g., "show me movies with Harrison Ford, his older ones, just the good ones" is an actual sentence that it should understand.

Oh, wait.... Siri not functional on Apple TV 4 in Switzerland!

Big question is going to be, can I buy one in the UK or Germany and use it with, say, my UK iTunes account here, and then Siri works? Remains to be seen.

Also remains to be seen if the unit here truly does have a different remote without Siri, or if it's just disabled for the time being.

Re Homekit: not totally lacking... I can now voice control my apartment Hue lights using home kit on iPhone or iPad. I'm sure that will come to Apple TV soon.

Re: IPhone 6S in Switzerland

I bought a 6S yesterday (6 going on the for sale section soon) after having a play with one in the shop yesterday. Liking the force touch a lot. The device is noticeably heavier, but not an issue for me.

I'm not sure if they aren't selling so well or if Apple have got their supply chain sorted, but the reservation tool suggested stock for all of the models I searched for (all 64gb, various colours and the plus as well as normal).

I also picked up an AppleTV. To confirm it does work with Siri if your account is set up for a country where it is activated e.g. the UK. It works really well. I've activated a Netflix trial - I'm getting UK prices, which are better than Swiss one, but as expected access only to the Swiss store.

There is already a Plex client clone in the store called SimpleX. It does what it says on the tin and is even capable of playing my torture test media file without any problems - large MKV, 1080p, Surround Sound. The AppleTV is doing the decoding rather than it being transcoded by my NAS - the NAS isn't up to the task.

Siri doesn't search your local iTunes library yet and isn't integrated into Plex. Apparently both of these features are coming soon. Biggest bugbear I've had so far is that the text entry is crap: A single row of letters to swipe through rather than 3 or 4 rows like a virtual keyboard. It takes forever to enter account details or search the app store.

My two wishes for apps are a Sonos app and a Horizon app. If I could control all the music through one app and could watch live tv via the AppleTV (with Horizon) it would simplify my AV setup nicely.

Re: IPhone 6S in Switzerland

Hi,

Roku, Amazon Fire and Chromecast seem to be better alternatives to Apple tv unless having itunes access is important to you. In fact a lot of smart tvs already have most of the functionality provided by the streaming boxes. The new Apple tv box seems to be very expensive to the alternatives. In the fact the original Apple tv box seems a better choice.

Have fun
Martin
