UPC cablecom Basic Internet

Hello everyone, I met a problem. Please suggest...

I just moved into a new flat, where I started using UPC cablecom 3-in-1 cable connection. My computer losts Internet connection quite often (around 30 minutes), which means I have to restart the modem every 30 minutes. I called the technical service, but a man answered, "sir, you are using our basic Internet service, which is free." something like I should be tolerant with these problems... By the way, is it totoally free??

Now my question is,
1. anyone can kindly give me some suggestions to fix this unstable Internet connection? Actually, I am happy to upgrade the UPC package, as long as the connection is stable. However, i am a little bit worried that an update won't solve...
2. If I switch to another company, what shall I do with the current contract? UPC told me I don;t need to pay for the basic Internet, which is already included in the rent. I guess the landlord will ask me to pay by the end of this month (because in the renting contract, internent is not mentioned at all). Am I correct?

Many thanks for your suggestion!

Jaric

Re: UPC cablecom Basic Interent

I have the basic internet and don't have the same problem. It can be patchy but I never need to restart the modem. It's fine for streaming and the ping is fine for gaming even.

It is possible that upgrading won't solve the problem if you constantly need to restart the modem... I would contact cablecom again and explain the issue. I also believe it's possible to upgrade for only 15CHF more per month to 10mbit, if you already have the basic internet.

So, the internet is free, but there's a connection charge. In my apartment, I have to pay this, but in yours maybe your landlord is responsible. In that case... if you switched to swisscom and didnt need the teleresau from cablecom I believe you can get it refunded from your rent (27chf per month).

Re: UPC cablecom Basic Interent

Thanks a lot, Enohzee!

By the way, do you use WiFi with the basic Internet? I am using my laptop as a hotspot. Maybe this is the reason?

Anyway, many thanks for your suggestions and comments!!

Yes, I'm using a Wi-Fi modem. It was actually sent to me (for free) when I signed up for the basic internet with cablecom. I was expecting a cable modem but I heard a rumour they were out of stock and so had to send Wi-Fi modems instead...

My experience of using a device (my phone) as a hotspot has not been good and is never very consistent, so I would try plugging in a wi-fi router to see if it solves your problem.

Thanks a lot for the information. That's the rumor I heard also. I am not lucky enough to get a WiFi modem

Re: UPC cablecom Basic Interent

It seems that every time the modem connected to a new device (e.g. pc; laptop; or even the computer is restarted), the modem need to be restarted manually again... Just to let everyone know my situation.

I am considering an upgrade for the speed -- upc; swisscom or sunrise ......

TO me it seems that you have one of two things, either 1) the router needs some reconfiguration (maybe try a full reset) or 2) it is faulty and needs replacement, just contact UPC and have them replace the device for you.

dont bother at all with UPC. They are simply BAD! Find out from UPC when is the ealiest you can quit the contract. Then quit it and change to Swisscom.Swisscom will arrange most of the changeover for you.

Their answer " you have the basic modem you can expect problems" shows their mentality.

Your connection fees ( internet,TV and radio should be included in rent if you rent a place. Contact the owner. These fees will be 33CHF a month from next year. If you go to Swisscom you can quit these fees. They come and "plug" your plug. Then you have TV ,radio and internet from Swisscom.

Re: UPC cablecom Basic Interent

You could also get a wifi router for 20.- and basic plus internet (not on their website, you have to ask) that offers 10/1 for 15.- / month.

Choose Swisscom only if money doesn't matter to you.

Re: UPC cablecom Basic Internet

Just plug a router into the device first and connect your laptop etc to the router.

I find UPC pretty good tbh for 27.- per month and no setup fee. No complaints from me

Re: UPC cablecom Basic Internet

I did Tech. Support on Router 7+8 years ago, and quite often, Cablecom customers seemed to lose the internet connectivity for up to 30 minutes, and then it was back again.
That was a DNS Issue, where they were in fact still connected to the internet, , but unable to connect to Cablecoms DNS Servers, and if they used Google's DNS Server 8.8.8.8 instead, all was fine. I knew of this when I arrived to Switzerland, and use googles DNS, and never have any problems.
It was 8 years ago, things can have changed, but maybe it is also the solution to your problem.

Doc.
