Importing Chinese Phone

Hello all,

I am aware of the 8% sales tax etc of buying over 62CHF.

But has anyone here bought a chinese phone and had it imported from China?

I am well read up on chinese phones these days but would like a clearer view on the charges someone has faced with a chinese phone of roughly 200-300CHF value.

Many thanks.

Yes, it is not an issue but its you and your luck re duty. To be honest no good phone is below 62CHF but the seller can probably put 62USD on the package.

do not forget there is also the post duty processing fee! (plenty of threads on EF about this)

one thing you have to be careful about and that importing a fake Chinese mobile ie a Samsuung or a Samsong .. etc

Re: Importing Chinese Phone

Yes I am aware of the processing fee etc, for a 300CHF phone I am expecting about 35chf to be paid on top? Is that completely underestimating?

Dont worry I am not going down the clone route. This will be my 4th Chinese phone, an LeTv Le One Pro.

Re: Importing Chinese Phone

Duty on tariff number 8517.1200 is Zero/Nill/Nada.
Shippers handling fee (applies if tax or duty is above CHF 5) : Swiss Post CHF 16 + 3% of item value (capped at CHF 70).
Import tax is 8%
Charge for bad documentation: Swiss Post CHF 13
Charge if shipment was selected for inspection by Swiss Customs : Swiss Post CHF 13

Best case:
For a item which is CHF 300 (including shipping) and has a accurate CN23 attached:

CHF 300
+ CHF 16 (base handling fee)
+ CHF 9 (3% handling fee)
+ CHF 26 (8% import tax on sum of all of above)

Total CHF 51

Worst case:
For a item which is CHF 300 (including shipping) and has a inaccurate or no CN23 attached AND additionally was selected for inspection by Customs:
CHF 300
+ CHF 16
+ CHF 9
+ CHF 13 (Bad documentation)
+ CHF 13 (Customs inspection)
+ CHF 28.10 (8% import tax on sum of all of above)

Total CHF 79.10

PS: The worst that can happen is an item where the 8% tax applies, which has a value (including shipping) of CHF 50, and and it gets selected for additional inspection.

Before inspection:
Value CHF 50 (tax is less than CHF 5, so no tax is waived)

After inspection:
Value now CHF 50 + CHF 13 (tax is now CHF 5 or more, tax is charged)

CHF 50
+ CHF 13 (Inspection fee)
+ CHF 16 (base handling fee)
+ CHF 1.50 (3% handling fee)
+ CHF 6.45 (8% tax on all of the above)

Total CHF 36.95 charges for a CHF 50 item. Urgh.

I guess then that they have come a long way. I used the Xiaomi phone recently and it was good, so was the Oneplus. In fact, the Nexus 6P is made by Huawei now

Re: Importing Chinese Phone

the problem with chinese phones is that there are thousands of models and 95%+ of them are crap. you have to find the good ones amoung the many average or terrible ones.
