Moving Swiss Samsung LED TV to USA

We are relocating to the U.S. and are wondering if our Samsung Smart LED TV will work there. Of course, I am aware of the voltage difference and I plan on buying a step-down transformer to address this. Beyond that, should we anticipate any other issues? Thanks for your input!

Re: Moving Swiss Samsung LED TV to USA

CH = PAL
USA = NTSC

All above letters should be capitals, but EF automated system doesn't allow posts to contain only upper case letters - this sentance now allows capitals above.

Re: Moving Swiss Samsung LED TV to USA

It's beyond me why you'd ask a forum of anonymous lay people this question when all you need to do is google your TV's model number. Or look in its instruction manual.

As far as I know, most "smart" TVs are multi-voltage and have NTSC, SECAM and PAL tuners -- so they should work in CH and in the USA, straight out of the box.

Now, I'm waiting for you to post the model number so we can have the privilege of googling it for you.

You probably want a step-up transformer - feeding it 55V isn't going to work.

However, there's a good chance it will be happy on 110V anyway.

The analogic NTSC, PAL B/G and SECAM L systems have been phased out in most of North American and Western European countries. Nowadays in Europe, your Smart TV's PAL encoding system is only useful if you want to watch your old VHS or your old camcorder's Video 8 / VHS-C tapes. All Smart TVs sold in the past 10 years in Switzerland have the DVB-T tuner and many also the DVB-C tuner. Newer one (less than 2 years) have also the DVB-T2, DVB-C2. Many cable companies in CH are using the DVB-T signal instead of DVB-C so that you don't need to get an external tuner. North America on the other hand uses the ATSC standard.

You need to get an external digital set-up box (ATSC / ATSC-M/H) otherwise you can only watch free-to-air satellite TV, provided that your Smart TV has the DVB-S / DVB-S2 tuner. Usually your cable company (Comcast, COX, FiOS...) provides you a set-up box when you sign up for a new premier service.

If I were you I would just sell it and buy a new one in the States; that way you can spare yourself the hassle of moving it to the States and the cost of transformer, tuners and other possible issues...

Re: Moving Swiss Samsung LED TV to USA

Why don't you try to sell it? It's a big and fragil object to move to the US and I bet you get there something better for a better price...

The TV is less that 5 months old and bought from Media Markt

Unfotunately, this next move was a bit unexpected, else I would not have make such an big purchase right before the move. Looking at the responses from the awesome folks on this forum as well as Google, it seems like there is a lot of different variables to consider beyond voltage. And maybe you are right, selling might be smarter.

Thanks for all your help everyone!!!
