I signed up thinking wow that sounds great but now I am wondering can the router handle this? what would the wifi speed be? can the computer handle it? ipad?

The rep didn't seem to know much

Re: Swisscom 1 gig, is it real?

1 Gigabit/s = 125 Megabyte/s

I think it's an overkill. You probably have to connect with you router by wired Cat5e network cable. If you choose wireless, got with a dual-band AC router. It has a shorter distance but better connectivity.

Anyway, I prefer good latency vs download speed. I'm fine with 50Mb/s

Let me know what latency you get with this service once you have it.

Re: Swisscom 1 gig, is it real?

you get a free router with it i think, so... normal ethernet cables are fine (they are cat5).
unless you need for some specific things (up/down lots of data) i would have saved the 30 chf/month and took the 200 mbps.
netflix 4k video streaming for example is only 15.6 mbps, you have 1000 mbps. throw in people using torrent, downloading, etc. it's really hard to saturate it and justify the extra-cost.

Re: Swisscom 1 gig, is it real?

I upload a ton of mb's in photos to the cloud. The areas where the network cables are is funky in the flat but swisscom was supposed to have connected me the 6th but no box ever arrived. It's a bad area for mobile too so need to try tomorrow if I can figure out where the box went.

Maybe I should ask to downgrade? I just have so much in mb's I upload it was kind of like a dream come true! On my old connection I had like 200days left to update my cloud

I don't know if you can downgrade maybe there's a minimum months contract.

Seriously? I had no idea. It better work then. But so do I don't even have the box. It was upgraded by phone. I never even got confirmation. I only have the slip from the shop with the lower package as the shop said that there was no fibre

What they gave me in the shop was 1 page with activation date and account number. For the original xs package. Does say 12 months but nothing about up or down grading. So far I have zero connection.

Re: Swisscom 1 gig, is it real?

1. I find these speeds total pointless for normal households. We have for example 2 iPhones, 2 AppleTV, Swisscom TV and 3 computers. I've never said oh man it's soo slow and the TV is not working. Our max speed is listed at 100mbit but we only achieve around 30mbit and it's fine. Unless you have some specific requirement for ultra high speed then don't waste your money.. Most of the providers you will be connecting to are not uploading at anywhere near these speeds so you can't possibly max out the download unless you split the sources.

2. Speed is only part of it.. Contention is just as or more important. How many other households are sharing your 1gbit line? 10? 100? 1000?
My office in GE is connected with a 40mbit dedicated line. We have +200 people from IT to traders connected worldwide 24/7 all connected to a 40mbit line.. But nobody is sharing it so it works fine, 40mbit = 40mbit.

So 1gig, is it real.. No.

Re: Swisscom 1 gig, is it real?

well that's quickly solved with a speedtest, if you're not getting what you are paying for you should complain to the provider otherwise we end up like italy

Re: Swisscom 1 gig, is it real?

I can have 32 gigs a week in upload. I didn't know there was fibre until after I ordered. I guess the only solution is to go back to the shop

where you pay for 15 mbps to get 8 mbps, or 8 to get 5, poor infrastructure and all clogged.
obviously not in milan center they have fiber there but in some places it's hell, there were some neighboords in reggio calabria that didn't even have cable adsl, 3G arrived there first, like in africa.

ah so what you are saying is that you don't have fiber to your home? in that case they could allow a downgrade if they didn't inform you well (i would hope they care more about keeping a client). but in some swisscom shops there are better people than in others.

My lease has the wrong address. So with the new address they said now there is fibre. My ex spoke to them and they recommend the 1gig. Right now I have nothing so anything would be lovely
