Apple TV (4th Gen) in Switzerland

Recently released here, has been commented on a little bit in the iPhone thread but I think it is worth it's own.

Is available now in store for chf 169 (32gb) or chf 229 (64gb) depending on the capacity that you choose.

Currently, if you have a Swiss iTunes account, Siri is not enabled but is likely to be further down the line. If you use a UK, US, or German account, you can already use Siri now with the Swiss remote.

Re: Apple TV (4th Gen) in Switzerland

I would like to point out that PLEX has it's own app for the new Apple TV and it works great for streaming content from your plex account on your laptop, pc, or NAS.

Really a very good system (with the inevitable few quirks).

Currently, PLEX cannot use Siri Search (though you can rewind etc with Siri), but it is likely to be forthcoming.

Re: Apple TV (4th Gen) in Switzerland

There are three things I just hate about this new Apple TV:
  • No Bluetooth keyboard any more - I could connect an Apple Bluetooth keyboard to my old Apple TV
  • The Remote App does not control the Apple TV 4, only the old Apple TVs
  • The Trailers App is no longer available in this TV - as you have to download it and it's only available in the US shop

For those who browse Youtube, Vimeo and such, having a keyboard or using remote is a big plus, instead of using the remote to enter the name digit by digit.

Apart from that, it's a nice device, the new remote is actually quite good, but I feel the change still does not justify for the moment. The device needs to mature.

Re: Apple TV (4th Gen) in Switzerland

For uk-type users, I can report that NowTV & Netflix work fine with the DNS service unblock-us. Downside re Netflix is that changing your Netflix location doesn't work unless you log out of Netflix and login again. And that, is a real pain using the remote. The old Apple TV just needed you to change profile once or twice. Oh, and ensure you set the box to Dolby Surround rather than Auto to ensure you get 5.1 sound, if you have that facility.

The games are great fun. It's like having a cheap wii. It's still a bit rough around the edges but the potential is there to see.

Re: Apple TV (4th Gen) in Switzerland

Yep, but I guess all of those things will be added in a future update.

At least, I can see me using this a ton more than my old Apple TV, which to me was just a curiosity.

Strangely SimpleX seems to cope better than Plex with some of my larger media files. No idea why!

Re: Apple TV (4th Gen) in Switzerland

I've plugged mine in and switched it on .. Well the app store has nothing interesting except netflix and youtube. crap.

I added the unblock-us DNS to my swisscom router and rebooted it.. but my laptop etc still show as being in switzerland .. Apple TV settings, i looked at the DNS setting in there and it's picking up the unblock-us DNS from the router, changed my location to US.. Restarted it.. Still nothing good in the app store..

Baaaa

I have the 3rd gen. I guess I'm not upgrading until it gets 4k capability and 4k becomes the norm.

Plex is very good. A few games are fun. Carrot Weather is entertaining. I like Houzz for home design ideas. But sure, nothing groundbreaking.

Re: Apple TV (4th Gen) in Switzerland

Considering picking up an ATV3 for my parents, so they can Airplay photos from the iPad and their iPhoto library to the TV.
ATV4 would be a total waste on them.

Re: Apple TV (4th Gen) in Switzerland

^^ Yes it can do that.

Not sure why you think ATV4 would be a waste. When your parents will be able to say to siri "show me photos of my son from last year" it will surely be easier to use than an ATV3. I'm not sure if it can do that already, but it will most likely be able to soon.

Because its an early version of Plex. I also use SimpleX. It works, shows unwatched which Plex does not. I tried to uninstall Plex and it left me with a "Null" app which could not be uninstalled. Had to reset and set the ATV up again. Not a big deal with an ATV but Plex will not be gracing its Home Screen for a long time.

I started using Plex with the early beta versions.

I'm at our US home now. Can you folks download specific USA stations like NBC or CBS in CH? I'd like to add some Swiss stations but don't see any. Are they limited to the Swiss Store or are there no apps?

Re: Apple TV (4th Gen) in Switzerland

A Zattoo app was released at the weekend. I've installed it now and am quite happy with it. It's currently quite basic - only live streaming - no recording or recall yet and it doesn't handle favourite channels. Those features will be available soon though.

It shows all the UK terrestrial channels free of charge as well as Swiss ones. For CHF 8 a month or CHF 65 a year most of the UK channels are in HD and it gets rid of (Zattoo) ads and has 7 days of catch up TV. It also works on your browser, phone, tablet etc.

I think the Cablecom box may be going back - Having Live tv, Netflix, iTunes and my media collection on one box makes this look girlfriend friendly!

Re: Apple TV (4th Gen) in Switzerland

How does the Apple TV 4th Gen stand with regard to connectivity, with for e.g. a macbook?

I found that the 3rd Gen has the tendency to be a bit temperamental when trying to connect.

Re: Apple TV (4th Gen) in Switzerland

Well I can say only this-the Swiss iTunes Store for films is an insult to any person who buys Apple TV or uses Swiss iTunes for renting films. Its just such a miserable choice.Theres not even a choice of film categories-there is no genre like on the USA Store. Better to say no choice.

Plus the Apple TV 4 has a software bug that has been the topic in many forums-it does not play films rented from iTunes -that is when you rent a film using iTunes on the PC and its downloaded and saved on PC. I contacted Apple and they have no solution. Well that is typical Apple.

All in all if you have USA account its good. Otherwise simply forget Apple TV-its was a hobby for Steve Jobs and is still maybe in that category.
