I have a new way to identify idiots - whoever has an apple "pencil" automatically qualifies as a moron.
Well, having used a Wacom tablet extensively for photo retouching I can see the usage case for the pencil, and I can imagine that it will be an ideal tool for some people.

Definitely as "creatives" seem to lean towards Apple products. Personally I prefer a phone with a large display (Galaxy Note 4) and a macbook air instead of a tablet.

Once you've use a Wacom tablet nothing else on the market will feel remotely close to it. The apple pencil is just an exorbitantly priced piece of junk which costs something like 99c to produce. Btw, the earlier Microsoft Surface was with a Wacom digitizer and it was much better than the current one. Not sure why they moved away from it

Re: iPad Pro

I've bought a pro and love it, it meets my requirement for media consumption on the move as well finally replacing my paper notebooks when in the office or carrying out research.

Ipad Air2 is a great device but just not quite big enough for what I need.

On the pencil - if anyone bought one and decided they don't need it - just shout and I will take it off your hands quite happily.

I would be tempted by an iPad Pro, but the price puts me off. I'm still using my iPad 2, which is so slow nowadays to be almost unusable at times, so I've been considering an upgrade. I have a 3-year-old Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook, but when I consider what I mostly use it for - email, web, Office - I could easily replace it (and my iPad) with a larger tablet.
Let me start by saying that I am a big fan of Apple.
I used to be a bigger fan, but …grew wiser

I own an iPad 2 myself and I have to say it's one of the best purchases I ever made. However, Apple is strongly pushing older models into oblivion, by means of software upgrades with no backwards compatibility.

I know this is done deliberately, because their IDE (Xcode) comes with no support for the older operating systems be it MacOS X or iOS.

So what I've done, is to let my iPad 2 at iOS 5.something version.
It is as fast as the first day I bought it, alas it cannot run newer applications, due to lack of backwards compatibility

Being a loooong time Apple user, this policy got me so frustrated, that I find myself shifted towards the Surface Pro devices.

BTW the Surface Pro 4 beats iPad pro hands down.

Re: iPad Pro

I have the original iPad mini which I bought almost 3 years ago. I'm running iOS9.2 (public beta) and with one setting (reduced motion: ON) it runs very well.

I'm sure they'll stop supporting it at some point but I've had laptops before that didn't make 3 years and still feel fast to use.

At the end of the day it is horses for courses - I have specific reasons for not wanting a Surface Pro, the iPad Pro meets my specific requirements - it is not a case of what beats what.

Re: iPad Pro

I got a MacBook Air as a Christmas gift and am not happy with the display resolution - will return it in the coming days.

I am leaning towards the iPad pro, as it would suit my needs.. however, it is not easy deciding what to replace the MacBook Air with.

Surface Pro is sounding really good too..

Has anyone else got any experience of the Surface pro 4?

Re: iPad Pro

I have been working with an ipad mini and a macbook pro for the past two years. I find the combination good (for me) but I don't have a smart phone and am not constantly attached to the internet.

I do move around a lot and my work is not tied to a desk, and I find the combination of the ipad mini (which fits in my handbag) for when I don't need a proper computer, and the laptop for when I need to do proper work with documents or major internet stuff, seems to work well.

I am sure the technology can go a lot further than I am currently going with the sort of work that I do... we're currently orientating staff to using cloud-based document sharing and that's a big step up for some of them...

I have massive arguments with 'techie' people who can't see that how one person uses technology is completely different to the next job/person...

It fascinates me... in the 'old days' (c. 1990-2005) I was an early adopter...these days I am mostly doing the minimum of what I need to do to handle the information overload...

I just bought an ipad mini 2 with more memory, and passed the ipad mini 1 to the kids so they stop borrowing mine...

We bypassed the Macbook Air. Could not see the point other than if you want an ultra-light laptop. Bought another macbook pro (which only has 1 USB port!) - my 2012 Macbook Pro is still going strong and they are still selling the same 'model'...

It does freak me out slightly to grab my ipad mini, connect a bluetooth keyboard and 'voila' I can type as fast as a normal laptop or desktop...
