VoIP/SIP/VPN help

Hey team, I need some advice. I apologize in advance for my ignorance on the topic.

I recently finished my work with a USA firm which had provided me with a VoIP IP phone/account with a USA phone number. This was connected via a Cisco ASA 5505 VPN and a Cisco phone.

I would like to set up a new account with a USA phone number. I have tried using Skype, but it has been unreliable and difficult to work with.

Can somebody direct me to a resource with the basics of what I need in order to obtain and maintain a USA number? Are there professional services which could walk me through this set-up?

I assume I need a new VPN of some sort. What do I need to buy and how do I connect it?

Can I use the old Cisco phone and simply connect it to the new VPN?

Thanks in advance!

Re: VoIP/SIP/VPN help

Hi,

I have a VOIP account with an internet based telephony provider allocate a fixed 'Zürich' telephone number. I have a router which was easy to configure with the internet telephony provider information, into which I have a plugged an old DECT base station serving three handsets. I also have a SIP client on my mobile so that I can receive calls made to my home number on my mobile phone as long as I have a data connection be it wifi or mobile data. The router was bought used on Ricardo for 60CHF, the phone number costs $1.99 per month. Our calls are mostly to European mobiles or landlines and cost from 0.50c to 1.80c per minute.

Cheers

Re: VoIP/SIP/VPN help

I use Google Voice -- http://voice.google.com You would need to use a US VPN or proxy to initialize it, as the option to sign up only shows up when you are using an American IP address. You can then call out or receive incoming calls via Google Hangouts, or use a VOIP adapter like ObiTalk: http://www.amazon.com/OBi200-VoIP-Ph...dp/B00BUV7C9A/ I also use LocalPhone, http://www.localphone.com -- where I have Swiss and US DIDs, and their rates are very competitive. I have travelled the world, and have my DIDs forward to my local mobile. E.g. the charge to forward/call to Swiss mobile is 11.9˘ (US cents). Also for a VoIP client, I would highly recommend Zoiper, http://www.zoiper.com I also have Asterisk and FreeSwitch servers on Amazon cloud, so I can have an IVR, and use FlowRoute and VoIP.ms for my SIP trunks.

Also, CallCentric offers free NY DIDs http://www.callcentric.com/dids/free_phone_number - Just sign up with a non-US address,
so you would not be subject to E911 fees.
