Should I buy an iPhone 6S+ in California or CH?

Hello!

Moving to Zurich in a week from the Silicon Valley. I need a new phone desperately, but was holding off to buy a phone, as I was not sure if a US- purchased iPhone would work in CH. I was thinking to use Swisscom in Zurich, and for my European travels, and for my travels back to the US (so, I'll need a world phone?)

Should I buy an iPhone in California before I leave? I have heard that everything is significantly more expensive in CH.

Has anyone done the math…is it cheaper to buy in the US? Is there a significant discount on the Swisscom monthly plan if I provide my own phone?

(Im not sure if I will be in CH for more than a year, so I am reluctant to commit to a 2yr plan for the carrier subsidized phone cost - am I stupid, economically, to buy a phone outright?)

I was thinking iPhone so that I can FaceTime and iMessage text my family in the US for free….thoughts?

Big question…if I buy the phone…say…from Apple…or perhaps Costco in the US…can I get damage insurance that will be honored in CH? (If not, that may be a good reason to buy the phone in CH…so that I can get damage insurance…no way am I buying a $900 phone without it) Thoughts?

Thank you!

Check prices (in CHF) at apple.ch.

I have an iPhone without contract. See Lycamobile.ch for pre-pay and pay as you go prices.

Facetime should work well - on wi-fi.

Apple worldwide seem very good at replacement. BUT, they rely on what's in their system, not receipts. It could be that Apple US and Switzerland are not connected. Others here will advise...

IIRC, if you buy the phone in CH you will get a two year guarantee. So you may want to check and see if the US price is less than buying it in Zurich with 1 yr of AppleCare.

Additionally, if you buy it on a two year contract in CH, and your company transfers you back to the US, you can break the contract with a letter that states that you are moving out of the country.

Personally, I bought an iPhone 6+ on eBay (in CA a few months ago) and saved a lot of money. But if you are leaving in a week, that is probably not enough time.

Good luck. Zurich is "crazy expensive" but there are ways to save here and there. Just don't expect to eat out or go clubbing a lot... Buy a 50% off rail card and go to France/Germany/Italy for that!

The whole Apple Care debate is a topic unto itself - but my take away was that it is not worth it. HOWEVER, that is the case while in the US where there are tons of third party service providers who can replace a cracked screen or perform minor repairs for about as much as the deductible. trade off is the time for repair.

Here - you will not have that same level of support available, so the local warranty does provide a piece of mind. I'm sure other service providers are out there, but like everything, its not as easy to efficiently Google when doing so in a foreign language.

FYI - The Apple stores are pretty much the same here as in the US - i.e. good service and can always find some staff that speak English.

FWIW, I am waiting to get back to the states later this month to do my phone upgrades / purchases. Its a couple hundred cheaper for me per phone.

Re: Should I buy an iPhone 6S+ in California or CH?

I use an unlocked iPhone purchased in the US along with a Swisscom SIM as my "Swiss" phone. It's worked out well and I've never had any problems. I also keep a second phone with a US number and carrier that is expired from contract and runs month to month. It's handy when I return to the US for extended periods and for people that expect a US number. For voice calls to the US, I typically use a Skype account with an international calling option.

Your business needs, travel and calling frequency will really determine which options are the most cost effective for you. Look at the data roaming options and charges and consider your situation. It's less expensive for me to keep a second phone than pay international roaming charges.

However, if you only want one phone and are soon moving here, you may also want to consider Swisscom for television and internet. Their bundle offerings along with a phone my override any savings on a US purchased phone.

Definitely buy it in the US rather than here. Buy it on ebay to possibly avoid the sales tax and to get a better deal than in the stores. Usually there is a daily deal on them.

Also make sure to get the GSM model (not tied to Verizon or Sprint). The phone must also be unlocked in order to work here. (if you buy from ATT or TMobile, the phone will be locked to their network)

Do not, I repeat do not bother with Swisscom. Get Lycamobile which uses the Swisscom network. They have great prices for data and for international calls

Re: Should I buy an iPhone 6S+ in California or CH?

Actually, I think all of the Verizon USA iPhones have been sold unlocked for a few years due to a deal struck with the FCC. I am not sure about the 5/5S series, but definitely the 6/6S are factory unlocked + they will work on GSM networks and Verizon USA (for some, that is an added bonus). I have a Verizon iPhone 6 and 6+ that I bought in the US and use in Europe, so can attest to this.

But unlocked iPhones can be bought quite easily from any carrier. However you only have a week, so it might not be enough time to have it sent to you.

Good luck
