Deposit required by Internet provider

Is it normal that Internet Service Providers require deposit of in my case 600CHF in order sign Internet+TV contract with you? They claim due to lack of past history of payments they need to keep 600CHF of deposit for 12 months

Re: Deposit required by Internet provider

Certainly this has been the situation for many years with a phone landline. So the Internet could/ should be the same.

EF is full of tales of people bunking off without paying bills...

No idea if it's normal but based on my data sample of one () I'd say not all of them require a deposit - I didn't pay one. I set up our phone/ internet/TV package from the UK before we arrived, made sure the line would be activated the day we collected the keys to our new Swiss home and went to get the router etc that had been left for us at the local Post Office. We got our first bill about three weeks later.

I (EU, Permit B) did not have to pay a deposit either (www.ewl-internet.ch).

What pemit do you have? B or C ? Long ago for me, it made a difference. You don't here much about the provider these days. It was the Swiss PTT. When I got a C permit, I got my deposit back. Of course, with a telephone, there is a greater potential to create a huge debt than say a flat rate internet connection.

Re: Deposit required by Internet provider

Hi,

the only deposit I ever had to pay here was when we rented our flat. Never heard of having to pay a deposit by the internet provider. Is it Cablecom ?

Have fun
Martin

Re: Deposit required by Internet provider

When we first arrived we had to pay the first year up front (it was a local Quickline provider) - after that it went normal month by month.

I was given some story about a lack of credit history, but I never did fully believe it (as we leased a car, got credit cards, etc. at the same time...)

Re: Deposit required by Internet provider

Personally, I wouldn't use their service if I had to pay a full-year deposit. In fact, any deposit at all.

What recourse do you have if their service happens to be poor? They'll simply deduct your monthly from the depost.

Same here, although by this time PTT had morphed into Swisscom. IIRC it was a CHF1000 deposit as B permit holders in 1998, returned when we got our C permits.

Re: Deposit required by Internet provider

I haven't been asked for my permit by any provider.

Signed up to two separately in two different locations after being out of the country for a while... no checks, nothing, just got the modem and carried on...

Easiest country I've come across to set up an internet connection.

Breitband... I popped into their shop to talk to someone about the ordering process, walked out with a modem that plugged in when I got home.
UPC... delivered modem the day it was ordered for, plugged in and online in 5 minutes.

Took 6 weeks to get ADSL enabled in France and it's usually 2-3-4 weeks in the UK!

Re: Deposit required by Internet provider

Strange because today when I wanted to buy Internet for 35CHF at Salt they asked my residence permit with photo (confirmation of requesting the permit that I received from Gemeinde was not enough)

Re: Deposit required by Internet provider

Salt only do mobile internet?

Mobile operators are different... all contract mobile operators will ask for a permit. Salt seem to be the only ones who ask for it for prepaid... I was going to get Coop mobile prepaid and they wanted it. So I went TalkTalk instead...

Today we tried to buy Aldi Mobile prepaid card but we were refused to get one without residence permit. Our EU passport was not enough

Re: Deposit required by Internet provider

I didn't even know Aldi mobile existed

I just had a read - yeah, it does state on their website that they require a residence permit or swiss id.

It's a little odd, because they're a reseller for Sunrise.

Sunrise do not require a permit.
TalkTalk, also reseller for Sunrise, do not require a permit.
M-Budget (Migros), do not require a permit.

Try one of those three?

Re: Deposit required by Internet provider

When I first came over I got a phone / Internet combo contract with Swisscom. No mention of a deposit. You might consider shopping around as I don't think this rule is imposed as standard.

Re: Deposit required by Internet provider

Here is the secret: it depends on your nationality, not your permit type. I made two mobile contracts, one for me and one for the wife. Mine was no problem, hers required a deposit. So I had two mobiles to my name for years, which was apparently no problem again...

When I returned to Switzerland last year was there a very different approach by different providers. I paid a deposit on my salt contract as the contract is so much cheaper than Swisscom that I can see how Swisscom can survive without deposits...
