Re: The Android Beasts Thread 2016 Edition... With Extra ZOMG!

Well guys, I tried the S7 and the S7 Edge in the flesh today in the UK and here are my thoughts:

1) The S7 Edge is really not as big as I imagined. It is basically the same width as my S5, thinner, and a bit (visually it seems 0.5cm or so without looking at the specs) longer, certainly not enough to fret about, and NOT what I would call phablet sized... and I am sensitive to that kind of thing. The Edge screen is beautiful and just seems so right for that resolution.

2) The regular S7 was slim and trim and feels like a lovely designed and solid phone however it seems somehow inferior to the Edge.

3) The camera... holy crap is it amazing! Lightning fast focus and the detail and cleanliness of the image is phenomenal by phone standards. I was impressed. Very impressed. I would say it is as good as a decent basic point and shoot.

I am now strongly considering cancelling my previous order for the S7 and changing it to the Edge.

That actually looks like an amazing device, is it dual SIM? However I can't buy a high end phone without Super AM OLED, it makes all the difference to my eyes, regardless of cost. Plus there is going to be so much investment in Samsung Gear VR that I am looking forward to seeing where it leads.

Still, the Mi5 is an amazing device for the money, that can't be denied.

Re: The Android Beasts Thread 2016 Edition... With Extra ZOMG!

So many of the 2016 flagships carry Sony camera sensors, I wonder WHAT THE are Sony doing, jerking around with model names while others do better with each next generation...

Talking of joining the dark side - did you know that with Mi5 you could double-dip? Windows10 ROM coming for it soon enough.

Sadly my company use locked down Windows Phones as our corporate devices... I'm not a fan to say the least.

You can see and play with it in the car phone warehouse ... specifically at the Westfield shopping mall and Oxford Street branch. And BTW I fully agree with the earlier review of the S7 plus yes would go for the S7 edge not the S7.

But with incremental changes they've managed to sell people a new phone every year.

If they make it right the first time, then they would have sold just once
Oh yes I agree, the model clearly works and is an excellent business decision!

It's just not enough to tempt this tight fisted bastard into parting with some of his "next motorbike" fund for the "latest and greatest"

I am still on the fence. The Edge is bigger and feels more satisfying to hold but I also noticed that the screen image is a bit more fuzzy where it goes over on to the Edge of the screen, it somewhat ironically lacks the edge to edge clarity of the regular S7.

I also think it will be more prone to knocks to the side of the screen and could potentially feel quite chunky when it has a decent case on it.

I'm still so annoyed there isn't a 64gb version on release.

Well in my opinion the reintroduction of the expansion memory sd (up to 200GB) more then compensates for the lack of the 64GB Base memory. And to be honest it is much cheaper to buy a 32 or 64GB sd then to get the phone with 64GB.

The problem is that with the S7 the SD cannot be used to install apps, and 32GB is not so much if you factor in only 24GB is usable and many games now take 1-3GB, with complex apps not far behind.

Flash memory is crazy cheap for manufacturers to implement, moving from 32GB to 64GB costs them almost nothing in real terms, and there are many new high-end Android phones this year coming out with 64/128GB internal as standard at a much lower pricepoint than the S7. There's really no excuse, and it is a cynical and intentional restriction on Samsungs part.

If it has a recent version of android (android 6 upwards), it should support adoptable storage which means SD card can be used as if it was internal storage space.

Do a thread search for "adoptable".

No - Even though it runs Android 6, Samsung hobbled that function. Obviously - otherwise people would just buy the model with the minimum storage and then stick an SD card in it.
