Kindle need urgent software upgrade before 21. March!

Customers will need to update the software on their Kindles by 22 March or risk losing access to all of Amazon's Kindle services including the book store and being able to update wirelessly over WiFi.
According to Amazon these are the devices that will need the emergency software update:
  • Kindle 1st Generation (2007)
  • Kindle 2nd Generation (2009)
  • Kindle DX 2nd Generation (2009)
  • Kindle Keyboard 3rd Generation (2010)
  • Kindle 4th Generation (2011)
  • Kindle 5th Generation (2012)
  • Kindle Touch 4th Generation (2011)
  • Kindle Paperwhite 5th Generation (2012)
Amazon hasn't revealed why the update is so essential but it will almost certainly be grounded in security.

Re: Kindle need urgent software upgrade before 21. March!

This.

Just to add that according to the message I got, if you do miss the deadline it will be possible to do some sort of manual jiggery-pokery (my terms, not Amazon's!) to sort your Kindle too. My knackered old "back up" Kindle downloaded the update in around 15 minutes of my turning on the Wi-Fi. I received a "You've updated" letter too.

Probably because you don't need it. There's more detail here https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/cus...deId=201994710 and checking my device it's already on the version listed on that page.

Re: Kindle need urgent software upgrade before 21. March!

okay my very old Kindle 2 (one with the keyboard) received the update yesterday. There was a new 'book' added to my Library which was basically a message from Amazon saying your device has been updated and is good to go...

The newer Paperwhite is still waiting ...

Re: Kindle need urgent software upgrade before 21. March!

My Kindle is one of those needing an upgrade... but as it's only use is currently as a paperweight, I've paid no attention.

I let the battery run out and stupidly didn't notice for a while, as I only use it when traveling. (Got it in the US so couldn't order books when in Switzerland blah blah blah...)

Apparently a known problem with this version of the Kindle is that when the battery runs all the way out and is left empty for too long it then can't be re-charged. Tried all the work-arounds I found online, nada.

So it's a paperweight. An expensive paperweight given all the books I had on it.

That I could lose so much so easily sent me back to real books, even when traveling.

Oh I have exactly the same problem. Dug my old kindle out yesterday which I only tend to use on holidays, tried to charge it up and nada. Nothing I've tried so far works.
Guess I've just got myself an expensive paperweight too.

Edit: for some inexplicable reason it has now sprung back into life. Looks as though I'll have to go back to using a rock as a paperweight.

Dear Meloncollie

Have you tried to just leave it in the charger for a day or so? I had the same problem and bitched about it for a week...then went back into the washroom where I set it to charge the next weekeend and voila - it revived itself!

I would also be mad!!

Re: Kindle need urgent software upgrade before 21. March!

Meloncollie - I have been through a few kindles, each time Amazon have sent out a new one without questions. Even it yours is out of warranty it may be worth giving them a shout to see if they will replace it.

Hi

Not sure if you know this - but all your Amazon content is linked to your Amazon account and your email address, NOT the device. Everything you've purchased will be viewable (and readable) via your Amazon account (you can download free Kindle reading software to your PC/tablet). If you buy a new Kindle, you just register it to your account (or if you buy from Amazon it'll be pre-registered to you) and wait for everything to download/ synchronise. I have two Kindles, and they both have the same content because both are registered to my account. You can also de-register any Kindle at any point and have someone else register with THEIR account details and it becomes their device, with their content.

This makes it pretty much impossible to lose your purchases - they exist in the Amazon Cloud.

It will charge eventually - or at least it should - I left mine for 6 months, left it plugged in for a full day and it was fine. That Kindle is the kind you have to click a button on the side to change pages - it's not a Touch or Paperwhite.

Yes I know that, we have 3 kindles and this was the oldest one. It took over 24 hours to do it but eventually charged fine.

You can also temporarily de-register a kindle, let somebody else register it and upload their purchases then re-register it again in your name. Their uploaded purchases are then viewable on that device ( as well as all your own stuff) but not on any other device registered to the same account.
