French prepaid SIM card

I'm looking a French prepaid phone card for occasional use (ie when I'm shopping or during trips).

It seems that most people in France use monthly plans.

As a result of the terrorist alert, it's difficult for a non-resident to get a mobile phone number in France. For some operators there is even a waiting period of several days before activation.

Also, validity of top-ups is much shorter than in Switzerland.

Any suggestions?

Re: French prepaid SIM card

If that is the case, you could look at a CH pre-pay with Salt. You add the Europe option for CHF 5.00 per month. You can start/stop it via SMS. Details are on the lower part of the page.

The roaming costs without the Europe option are pretty steep. But the Europe option might be what you need.

Details are here. https://www.salt.ch/en/prepay/

Re: French prepaid SIM card

There are probably dodgy sources of french sim cards or maybe even ebay, at your risk. Otherwise a SIM card from any EU country should attract the same restricted call costs. Most EU countries include Switzerland as an EU country in the call costs and it's sometimes actually cheaper to use my UK or German SIM card in Switzerland. Indeed, I think the other year the cheapest overall SIM for use in Switzerland was from Aldi Germany or something like that.

Re: French prepaid SIM card

I recommend a French brand called LeFrenchMobile. It's prepaid sim card. You can order online and they will send to your home or the place you would live in France within 5 days. For the plans, they have the sim+credit plan that you just buy the creadit as many as you want and customize it. For example, if you buy 12 euro credit, you would have up to 40 mins calls and 45 texts and 200MB data bundle. And if you want more, you can just top up online. They also have the plan for the EU countries. If you want data more than calls and texts, they also have the data sim plan in France. You can choose and there are more details on their website: http://www.lefrenchmobile.com/en/sim...or-france.html hope it could help

Re: French prepaid SIM card

If you do NOT need much data, you can go for togglemobile.co.uk

It's powered by lycamobile and gives you several numbers on one SIM, which all work simultaneously.

You can have a Swiss and French number. Incoming calls are free, on whichever number, in many countries.

Drawback, as per first line, is no real data option.

Re: French prepaid SIM card

My swiss LycaMobile works perfectly well in FR .. No extra charges for data or calls. When I cross the border I get an SMS, welcome to your "feel like home service" .. "You can do stuff like you were in Switzerland" Ok the data is 3g, not LTE but it's fine fora few hours shopping / skiing etc.

What are the conditions to get this? Their website isn't clear about this.

In theory I'd love to use Lycamobile myself, but unfortunately they don't allow call divert and overall their offer is super cheap, but also super-unclear when it comes to roaming.

I don't think i bought or activated anything .. I'm a really simple user, 99.9% data for me.. I top up and then buy a 5 or 10gb data bundle.. That's it.. But when I cross to France or go to the UK, I get this SMS telling me the service is active and I just use it like normal . It seems to cost more or less nothing to use the phone abroad.

** By default data roaming is disabled in my iPhone so it's not actually roaming, it's using the local service or something, it also allocates me a local number in the country I'm visiting so that when I call somebody locally they see a local number calling them. It's witchcraft but it's cheap

We have Coop Mobile, which is part of Salt. Any clue if this deal works with Coop Mobile? There's nothing on either website to indicate. I suppose we could just send the text and see what happens, but it would be annoying to get charged the 5 Francs and still get roaming charges in France.
