Best TV streaming devices for use in Switzerland

I cannot get cable tv where I live and cannot use my complex's satellite (mostly Swiss German channels) so was looking into getting a streaming device. I have done a little research but what I have found is for use in UK or US.

Does anyone have any recommendations for use in Switzerland for live streaming? I would be interested in UK and US channels (BBC, maybe ABC, NBC, etc.) and would love to get live news outside of CNN as well as access to events like Wimbledon and the olympics.

Cheers!

agreed, except not the firestick, just an android 4 core hdmi stick, I use rikomagic's one. 4 core needed for smooth hd/4k playback

Re: Best TV streaming devices for use in Switzerland

That sounds great. Do these sticks come with remotes? I don't have a 4k tv so probably don't need a 4k stick?

Also, I only have a wifi hotspot through Salt (25-40 mbps) because normal wifi is super slow (1.5-2.5 mbps - hence why I cannot have cable).

Is that an issue?

Doesn't need to be a stick - loads of tiny Android boxes around for fifty chuffs or less, and perhaps slightly more versatile than a stick.

But I'd be cautious about kodi - I've tried it but it really doesn't do a good job for me, as I'm not interested in movies, long-running US series and the like, and I've not found a way of getting current stuff from UK broadcasters.

Yes, with VPN you can, with a little bit of tech savvy, use BBC iplayer and some other apps, or as we do the swisscom tv2.0 app to access our subscription channels from France, but using kodi itself had been very disappointing. I'm open to hear how it can do better though.

Re: Best TV streaming devices for use in Switzerland

what apps are you using on kodi, some are very hit and miss, the ones that come pre-installed on a lot of these sticks are out of date before you even get them.

I just use a bittorrent client and download them, saves a lot of grief only thing we stream live is the F1 and finding a good stream with our lousy broadband (2mb max) is a right pita

I'm not at home for a few days so if i remember I will post back. But I have an app that runs on the Firestick outside of Kodi for all of the UK and other sports channels in HD which works superbly.

Ah, OK, so you're just using kodi to organise and play stuff then. Deciding in advance what we'd want to watch and torrenting it is more of a PITA than would work for us. I do that sometimes but only for stuff I can't get otherwise.

I've tried many, without success. A few have worked for a few channels, but with no EPG to choose programs. Please let me know what you're using and I'll give it a try.

Re: Best TV streaming devices for use in Switzerland

mainly torrents but streaming for live sports, but your always going to hit a wall with slow internet speeds, ours is supposed to be 2mb but we are lucky to get 1.5 and thats just not good enough for anything but the lowest quality stream

Re: Best TV streaming devices for use in Switzerland

Hi,

just get a Roku box and use a smartdns service.

Of cause you could just use Zattoo if you don't need any catch up services.

Have fun
Martin

Ah beer, the answer to all life's problems. The cause of many, too.

Thanks for this, I've downloaded it https://www.mobdro.com/ and given it a go, and it seems to do exactly what it says on the tin. All the channels I tried, including some, like Sky, that I don't get through my Swisscom sub, work just fine.

Haven't tried the download option yet, but will do soon.
...
Just been playing around some more, and it seems to give a while load of subscription channels including Sky F1, which will be just fab.

Is there a catch I'm missing? Seems too good to be true, somehow.

If you want to spend a lot of money wilmaa comes to mind, the box with remote is 200 chf and you get 30h/month of free tv with bbc and cnn or you can pay to get more stuff. I guess you could also stream it from the phone directly to the tv.

No catch, I think you need premium to download and remove the ads. Otherwise, it is what it is.

Would love to know what that is if you can remember. I am very low tech so downloading torrent stuff will never happen (which is what someone else recommended).

I have tried doing things like that before and I have almost always gotten spyware or malware, which took me hours/days to get rid of. There must be a way to get the goods without the nasties, but I have no idea how. And I don't have the time to figure it out either.

Ah, never mind! I just found your answer above.

Thanks!
