Average mobile subscriber uses 4.4 GB of data per month

Swisscom just put out its report for the first half of 2016.

Among all kind of impressive figures, this one stood out for me: the average data volume per residential customer (postpaid) in the mobile phone network was 4,424 MB/month, and doubling each year:

At first blush it seems huge but that's what three hours of HD video take up. Personally, I only use about 1.5 GB/month, but I seldom watch video except when on wi-fi.

It's time for providers to go with the times and start offering something more than just 1-2 GB/month.

Re: Average mobile subscriber uses 4.4 GB of data per month

Hi,

I commute from Basel to Zurich and so my phone is my hotspot for the laptop. I would think 4-5 Gb a month max. I would never think of streaming hd video over a mobile phone.

Have fun
Martin

With my 0.15GB M-Budget prepaid monthly allowance I feel positively frugal... OK, I'm rarely away from a wifi hotspot, but still don't find I need more...

Swisscom infinity plans are unlimited, but bloody expensive. I think the other networks have similar deals for less.

Pretty much the same here at 0.45 GB per month. Funny thing is that virtually all of that is through tethering

I honestly cannot see how people get through 4-5 GB per month - possibly the only explanation would be video streaming.

Some applications are wasteful - e.g. Google maps needs a couple of times more data to show map with traffic compared with Apple maps,
SBB app downloads an ad in the form of an animated gif.
Any desktop web page is full of graphics and can have size of a few MB. Add to it that the mobile browsers seem to reload the already visited page when pressing the back button.

Swisscom does not limit data volume. Instead it limits data speed from the start depending on the plan you have signed up for: Natel XS, for instance, is limited to 1 Mbit/s. Natel S (69.-/month without device) offers 10 Mbit/s.

Other operators have specific data limits for their cheaper plans:

- Sunrise: Freedom start is limited at 500 MB, Freedom classic at 1 GB. If you go over, you can carry on surfing, but at a severely limited speed. If you want real unlimited data, you need to step up to Freedom relax (65.-/month).

- Salt: Salt Start is limited at 1.5GB, Basic at 3GB. Salt Swiss (59.-/month) is unlimited.

Plans from MVNOs are all limited:
M-Budget mobile: 500MB - 1 GB
Coop Mobile: 2GB
das Abo: 1.5GB
Yallo abo: 1.5GB

Lycamobile offers data bundles of up to 20GB.

For their personal plans, that's true. For my business mobile, all three plans have uncapped speeds, too - despite being 50-80 bucks per month.

I use about that much per week. In a few years this discussion will be as passé as the amount of usage at home is now.

Re: Average mobile subscriber uses 4.4 GB of data per month

I use about 2GB a month, and 95% of that traffic is streaming internet radio which I listen to on my commute (~ 30 - 40 hours a month).

I only have my cell and tablet.

I have an unlimited package and use approx. 25G per month. 60% of that is probably Netflix.

Re: Average mobile subscriber uses 4.4 GB of data per month

I come up to approx 50-70 GB per month. But I listen to internet radio approximately 50 hours per week

I have to admit though, these unlimited plans (currently unlimited internet/calls/sms all over Europe and US) have made me careless for the internet usage, often sending videoclips and stuff to family and friends abroad.

Never used the phone for any movie streaming though.
