European mobile roaming charges to be axed. Pity the Swiss.

http://lenews.ch/2016/09/22/european...ity-the-swiss/

I got little excited. But then...

"Pity the Swiss

None of this matters if you are Swiss. Because Switzerland is in neither the EU or the EEA the new rules will not apply. For Swiss-based mobile users the news represents a double indignity. Not only are Swiss consumers already paying well over what most in the EU pay, they will miss out on this new deal."

I never go anywhere in Europe outside Switzerland, so it's all sausage to me.

Gotta love my 3uk sim... moved to .ch in march, and my phone keeps working for £10 a month... technically they could ditch me for being outside uk for 6 months at a time, but i figure that if i dont take the p they wont notice.

I've been doing this for over a year.

Other than getting funny looks from my Swiss mates when I give them my number it's all good.

Re: European mobile roaming charges to be axed. Pity the Swiss.

I don't think the plan to make roaming cheaper has been axed completely: the EU is discussing the project further, maybe having cheaper roaming for only 30 days per year (on holiday) etc. etc.

Take a look at your provider's website. On Sunrise and Cablecom there is the possibility of paying a small sum in advance, to make all your roaming calls & data packs priced at normal rates.

Unfortunately with Swisscom........ but then now I have 60 days per year which is sufficient. Would have been nice though to have a full year package (when my german cell phone contract runs out)

but they've scrapped the proposal to allow roaming for free for 90 days and gone back to the completely free roaming which was the original proposal.

By now competition seems more effective than the law.

I (continue to) use this German conctract, which works in Switzerland without limitation. Together with a Swiss SIM to only receive calls, I find it an unbeatable combination.

On www.handyhase.de this offer appears, more often than not, for €9.99/month.

Don't forget that EU regulation will stop being relevant to the UK as soon as the Brexit has been completed - so I wouldn't bet on UK SIMs as a long-term solution. What do the Germans providers offer?

Ive got a pay as you go. Not linked to any bank account, but is registered at my parents UK address, more so if i lose it i can get a replacement with same number than because they made me.

Costs me £10 a month for everything I need.

Topping it up over the internet only works with a U.K. credit card, though.

You need a UK bank account and address officially, plus you need to use it for 30 days in the UK before going abroad.

Plus I've had it disabled twice after a few weeks outside the UK, so this solution probably won't work for most people. A German provider would make more sense, I believe. Germany will stay in the EU, so service won't be cut off all of a sudden in a year or two as might be the case with UK providers, and it's easy to return to Germany to get things re-activated should they decide that you'd been absent too long

I know they say that they can disable it if you stay abroad for too long, but ive been using mine for 6 months and they havent done that..

Are you a heavy user? i pay £10 a month for i think for stacks of texts, 100 mins call time, and 1Gb internet, but dont really even use that.

I assume this information is only relevant for poor people who can't afford either the SALT or Swisscom contracts which include EU/US calls/roaming
