Gamer Laptop

I am looking for a good 17" gamer laptop with an English keyboard and Windows 10 in English. Looked at a previous thread and the only possibility mentioned was HP but there was a negative remark about it. I live in the Geneva area so have to order in Switzerland. Any suggestions ?

Same here, though I have heard some stories that state otherwise, there's a few stories on EF, if you care to look.

May I asky why a Laptop as gaming station? A desktop is so much better in gaming experience. Do you expect gaming while comuting in the train?

Re: Gamer Laptop

You can custom order through Dell and specify English keyboard also I would guess pretty much any custom builder could give you an English keyboard

Re: Gamer Laptop

We've bought quite a lot from Digitec and we have been very happy with them. My latest laptop, totally bought for serious work, which totally has only games installed (and an alibi Photoshop to pretend it's not for gaming) is HP. Previous one was also HP, and could even manage the graphics of Final Fantasy XIV.

When I tried to get a Portuguese keyboard I gave up because it was more expensive and really difficult to get at the time. I don't look at the keys, anyway, so it didn't make much difference You get used to the Swiss one fast.

Re: Gamer Laptop

If you were a real gamer you wouldn't need to look at the keyboard
On a serious note, if you order through the dell website you can choose the keyboard layout, maybe with other manufacturers as well. But alienwares I heard they are overpriced plastic, you pay for the brand I guess. Also, you might want to buy something with the new GTX 1060/1070/1080 graphic cards.

By the way, if you're going for a 17" laptop I suppose it is because you live in >2 places. Even if you don't have the US keyboard you can buy a cheap usb US keyboard and a bigger monitor at both locations. Expensive but might be worth it.

Also, I don't think you absolutely have to order in Switzerland, the RMA should be global, but expedition and duty could be very expensive on that I agree. Also have a look at nearby france.

You are right, in that sense I am not a real gamer

Thank you very much for your feedback. I play an interactive strategy game on the computer and although my computer should be fast enough for that (16 gigabyte which I have been assured is ample although I wouldn't know not being technically minded) the game is often slow due at least in part to the company's overloaded servers and constant glitches. That's why I would need a fairly good laptop.

I have owned 3 Dells previously and that was 3 too many, nothing but problems from the start and very poor customer service. The only reason I bought a 2nd and 3rd Dell was that at the time it was the only company from whom you could buy a computer with English keyboard and Windows in Geneva.

I am German although most of my working life my working language was English. I had to get used several times to switching keyboards and I hated it. Now that I am retired and all my German friends have either died or gone back to Germany I use practically only English and want things to be as comfortable as possible.

I shall follow up your recommendation with regard to the graphic card. Are there any other components that are important ?

I don't live in 2 places and I sincerely hope that my forthcoming stay in hospital will not become a 2nd place

This implies the errors are on the server side, which doesn't seem like the client will make the experience much better.

Re: Gamer Laptop

It's needs to be new?

This is for sale on a Geneva facebook group.. I imagine the price is negotiable. and the OS etc can be reinstalled. AZERTY is almost an english keyboard!

The advert date is 9th Sept but they commented yesterday that it's still available.

That is true up to a certain point. However, players with 16 gigabyte PC's do better than those who have only 4 gigabytes so the more powerful your computer the better are your chances to make the game run smoothly.

Re: Gamer Laptop

If you are in Geneva you can try Prodimex (near La Praille) http://www.prodimex.ch/

If you go into the Shop they might be able to advise you or custom order for laptop?

They do custom builds for Desktops too, or you can buy the bits and DIY.

I switched from a gaming desktop to a gaming laptop a year or so back and I will never buy another gaming desktop. So much quieter and cooler, and nothing beats being able to take it to your friends place for an impromptu gaming session. Not to mention on holiday to your family etc when needed.

With the new 10xx series of Nvidia graphics cards providing desktop performance, there is even less reason not to get a laptop in my view. Yes it's more expensive, yes it's not as easily upgradable, but for me the convenience factor is massive.

This bit doesn't make sense. SOunds more like you need a decent game, not a better computer.

Anyway: Since you are not the first person shooter type would I consider to take a "business model" and ramp up the spec. Most likely much cheaper than anything with Alienware or Razer written on it...
