Re: iPhone application recommendations

Ric as far as I know it works with all TV outputs (if that's the right term) we just happen to have Sky

Basically if you have a sling box set up with whatever system then the iphone app will work with it

I know there is a slingbox thread on here - may be worth checking it out

more info on the app here

Don't suppose there's any chance of this working for Swisscom TV?

Speaking of media-related apps. - Empire Magazine have released an app with ALL of their movie reviews stored on the device, with regular updates. I cannot recommend it enough.
If you want to record remotely, you can do so with ease if you have a Swisscom TV package.

I was in the UK over Christmas and my son asked me to record a programme on BBC 1 so that he could watch it when we got back to Switzerland.

I simply went to the Swisscom website, logged in and chose the Swisscom TV category, found the listing for that programme and clicked on "record".

The programme was ready to watch when we got home.

Re: iPhone application recommendations

I've never owned a TV before and I think I'm about to give in and buy one. There are too many good programs on the BBC I'm missing and with HD recorders it's soo easy instead of finding and downloading torrents all the time.

Especially as you can log in and set your TV or Sky box in my case, to record remotely if you have forgotten to put a programme on record.
TV Plus app also does this for Sky boxes.

A real great application is StarMap pro.

I thought star walk was good, but this one, IMHO, is even better. Makes it easy to get into astronomy...

Point de Vue (something like chf4.99) - identifies the peaks on all the mountains around you. Also maps them on google maps, tells you the height and draws them according to the light/shade of the time of day. A bit like a mountain specific google earth.
I found another good app: Swiss Peaks. It is free and you point your iPhone towards the mountains, and it tells you the name of the mountains, based on the actual view, not a silouette like Point de Vue.

Unfortunately not for the IPhone3Gs yet... They had to pull it back due to crashes. Hopefully the improved version 3.0 will be available soon!

Looked at this but was somewhat put off by the price - 55CHF.
Compared to other apps, certainly relatively expensive, but worth it IMHO. I bought it, and love the way it presents information as compared to conventional search machines.

Re: iPhone application recommendations

Moodagent - creates song playlists according to user settings in 5 categories (tempo, style of song etc.) It's a cross between Genius and Pandora in that it playlists songs in your music library (like Genius), but analyses song style rather (like Pandora) rather than using crowd sourcing (like Genius). Seems to work better than Genius.

LeShop - supermarket ordering like the website. Pros - can do shop offline and then post order when online. Available in English unlike Coop for iphone. (Amusingly, available in Switzerland in English, German and French, which really irritates Swiss Italians.) Cons - if you're italian speaking.

Sleep Cycle - you pack the phone under the bed sheets and the motion sensor measures your sleep cycles and the alarm wakes you when you're sleeping lightly, in order to make you feel less drowsy. Could be placebo effect, but it seems to work.

Sling Player - use with slingbox to watch sky box or other video source around the house or away via internet. Out of house quality is reasonable and depends heavily on home connection's upstream speed. Quality in the house is outstanding, possibly due to the fact that the stream passes only via router (not sure if this is true). Ditto for Sling player on a PC, by the way.

Empire - movie review database. Comprehensive and regularly updated. Reviews seem to be a bit oversympathetic.

Re: iPhone application recommendations

iTranslate - very handy when you are in the supermarket!
Skype - i use this while I'm at home to call UK landlines for free.
Facebook - not great when you want to type lots of messages but good for catching up on all the gossip.
SBB Mobile - this is great for quickly finding train and bus times.
WhatsApp - i think this is less than 1CHF to buy, and it gives you free text messaging to anyone else who has an iphone.
Phonebook

Today Opera demod a version of their web browser for the iPhone... whether or not Steve is feeling generous enough to allow it on the App store is something else entirely.

There's also ShopSavvy, which isn't in german.

TBH I've had it a while and hardly used it, mostly as I couldn't get it to work. Just tried it again now and if finally recognises the bar codes, so I guess they fixed up the reading problems. Unfortunately there's nothing nearby worth scanning, so not at all sure how well it works in Switzerland.

I doubt it. For a web browser to be effective these it has to at least be able to run javascript. Unfortunately that's interpereted code which falls foul of the rules.

I would truly love to be proved wrong however.

Re: iPhone application recommendations

for those that are industry savvy, it's the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this week.

with Apple, Motorola, RIM, Nokia & now Samsung all pushing their own app stores, the operators are fighting back :

Quote:
The so-called ‘Wholesale Applications Community’ will combine 24 of the world’s largest mobile carriers, including America Movil, AT&T, Bharti Airtel, China Unicom, Deutsche Telekom, KT, mobilkom Austria, MTN Group, NTT Docomo, Orange, Orascom Telecom, Telecom Italia, Telefonica, Telenor, TeliaSonera, SingTel, SK Telecom, Sprint, VimpelCom and WIND.
The four operators in the Joint Innovation Lab (JIL) mobile apps initiative – Vodafone, China Mobile, SoftBank and Verizon Wireless – are also included. The group serves a combined 3 billion mobile customers across the globe. Industry association the GSMA has backed the move.
interesting times
