| | | iPhone application recommendations
So I have my iPhone and I've finished flicking through photo's and got bored of trying to learn to use the keyboard so I guess I need to install some apps.
So far I have iPint, which I've tired off already. I also have the Facebook app with doesn't work and keeps asking me to re-enter my username and password so I've got bored of that too.
What other apps should I try? Is there a IM client that supports Jabber or MSN?

ok i unlocked my first gen iphone last night and got some apps.
shazam is amazing, it is voodoo black magic. basically, if a song is playing on the radio or television and you do not know who it is by, just open shazam and it listens to the song for 12 seconds then it can identify it. i was sceptical but it works beautifully.
secondly, the remote control app is also very clever, you can use it to control your itunes music from the iphone. seamless, and without hesitation. truly cool.
and both free.

Time to start getting airport expresses for every room in the house.

I'm really waiting for Gizmo to release a iPhone client, that would be truly great.

I just installed Locly, it's free and shows you the nearest pubs (and other stuff).
First impressions very good, it includes more Swiss locations than others

For what it is worth, here are my staples, the apps I cannot live without: - WeatherBug
- Facebook
- Wordpress (for my blog)
- Wine Log (use to take snap shot of wines we drink, then tag then)
- Currency (checks daily conversion rates)
- Remote Control
- AIM
- Bank of America Mobile
- MLB.com
- Convertor (need to convert US to metric)
That is it for my most important. I hope this helps

| | | | | I'm interested in this app. As I understand it's simple a database of wines you have drunk, it doesn't offer any reviews or lookups?

Is there a IM client that supports Jabber or MSN? | | | | | Yes, Palringo is free and supports both Jabber and Windows Live Messenger (plus a few other standards). I used it for the first time last night - and found the keyboard speed to be extremely lacking. It's extremely slow and entering/correcting my inputs made me so angry that I almost threw the phone against the wall.
Anyway, I hope they fix this soon.
What I also use:
- SplashID for storing my passwords
- Netshare (tethering - not available any more :-(
- Tuner (for listening to internet radio on the go or via WiFi at home)
- Ambiance (I have Tinnitus - makes me fall asleep more easily)
- Truphone (WiFi calls - expensive rates but cheaper than calling from abroad)
- FileMagnet (for copying over files to the iPhone)
- eReader (excellent eBook reader, supports ereader.com, fictionwise.com and your own uploads)
- 20min (for getting my daily dose of Switzerland's boulevard / crap newspaper)
- AccuFuel
- ShoppingList
- Units
- EasyTask
- Currency
- ToDo
- PassGen (generates passwords)
- AIM
- Palringo (AIM's MUCH better but only supports AOL)
- LocalPicks (yes, Swiss locations are supported)
- Shazam (just a toy)
Games I like and play:
- Sextuple Word Challenge
- CrossLight
- Lander
- DoubleDrop
- Imangi

I am a member of an Apple Mac users group. In their newsletter today they posted this, which I thought might interest a few of you...
Hackers working to develop software that unlocks the iPhone for use
on non-approved networks and in order to install unauthorised
applications are warning users not to install iPhone Software 2.0.1.
The iPhone Dev team
"If you own a first generation (2G iPhone), no matter what you do
now, you don’t have to worry, the next PwnageTool will get you where
you want even if it you prematurely updated. 2G is completely pwned
at every conceivable level and you’ll always be OK. But if you own a
3G iPhone and are looking for unlock in the near future, don’t use
Apple’s update yet," the team warns.
"PwnageTool v2.0.1 does not work with version 2.0.1 of the iPhone or
iPod update from Apple," they add. "We will release an update to
PwnageTool when the testing has been completed and all applied
changes have been checked for safety."

Maybe we should add the cost of these too.
As somebody who primarily uses OSS I resent paying for any applications, you could also call me tight I guess. Donating, fine, paying no.
Lockbox - free - stores passwords, it's pretty simple. | Quote: | | | | | Yes, Palringo is free and supports both Jabber and Windows Live Messenger (plus a few other standards). | | | | | I've tried this and am surprised it got good reviews to be honest, I find it pretty pathetic for the reasons you mentioned. I don't really see the use of an IM client that doesn't run in the background either.

Has anyone tried Evernote? I hear it's just been updated.
My App tip - Starmap is pretty awesome for telling what the stars and constellations are called, also other things like metero showers etc.

*I have not tried this yet*
Look at Simplifymedia, details here. It claims to be able to access your itunes music collection remotely. If it works (and I am in work so will have to wait to try it) then who cares about memory size?
It's currently free for the first 100,000 downloads, $3.99 after that.
