What is the big deal about Channel 4?

What is the big deal about Channel 4 besides the fact it has replaced BBC Prime on Cablecom? I went through the programme guide for the week and with the exception of one documentary, I can't say i found anything really redeemable to watch or record. Perhaps the channel really only caters for a more British public? I am not trying to annoy anyone who really loves Channel 4! Just wondering if anyone else thinks the same.

Re: What is the big deal about Channel 4?

C4 has the best news programme on any English speaking channel. Proper in depth, independant reporting.

We had the heartbreaking task of telling a two year old that there would be no more Balamory in the morning.

BBC Prime was rubbish for the rest of the day but Balamory was top telly for our little one.

I don't think so. Try BBC Newsnight, and Paxo's great weather forecast.

Agreed but for a general news programme C4 is the best IMO.

That's what the scrolling text on BBC Prime (9th September) had been saying for the last couple of weeks. You might be able to pick up BBC Prime if you have a telly provider other than Cablecom.

Re: What is the big deal about Channel 4?

Aside from Big Brother, they generally put out some quality shows. Some of my favourites (I had to go through their site, they have done so many),

Bo Selecta
The Ali G show
Scrapheap Challenge
Black Books
Father Ted
How clean is your House?
The IT crowd
Peep Show
Trigger Happy TV
Unreported World
Vic Reeves Big Night Out
Wife Swap (Awful, but compulsive)

Ok, they're mostly comedies, they also produce numerous in depth documentaries, too many to list.

I'll always remember them as a young boy for showing the more racy films and borderline soft porn, handily identified with a little red triangle in the tv guide.

Re: What is the big deal about Channel 4?

re-tuned last night and there it was!!!
typical Channel 4 first up -

Sex education programme - full frontal male and female , all at 9pm UK time! but it was interesting and i did learn something.

second up - documentary on breast feeding - lots of lactation shots

look forward to other similar progs. Knocks Prime into a cocked hat as we say

Ownership of ITN (who produce Channel 4 news): ITN is currently owned by ITV plc (40%), Daily Mail and General Trust (20%), Thomson Reuters (20%), and United Business Media plc (20%).

So independentish, but it is the 20% Daily Mail that worries me !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: What is the big deal about Channel 4?

I knew they were owned by ITN bit did not know about the daily mail involment!!! That worries me too.

My comment about independent is more about their news coverage, they don't appear to have the biases (sp?) that the likes of the BBC ir ITN on ITV have. I've seen John Snow ripping into politicians of all colours.

I'd not see this for a while - classic Paxman stuff:

I cannot believe they let him get away with it..... Oh, its
Paxman, so maybe I can...

Re: What is the big deal about Channel 4?

I hadn't heard about this before now but this has really made my day !! I love channel 4 and have really missed it since leaving the UK.

Although this could end up in another addiction to Hollyoaks and me spending both Sat and sunday morning glued to the screen watching the onmibus's.

Is it clustered together with the other English channels or is it elsewhere on the channel selection? For us it just went off, we had to switch off and switch on again and Channel 4 sputtered into life instead.

Re: What is the big deal about Channel 4?

Does anyone know how to add C4 to a favourite list of TV channels?

I have a favourite set of english channels and now Prime is just showing blank, and C4 isn't on the list, and I can't work out how to edit a channel list! Driving me nuts!!

(Oh yeah, in case it makes a difference I have a mediabox recorder on Cablecom).
